16.1 Cricket

The month belonged, in cricket terms, to a 15-year-old: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the Rajasthan Royals opener, broke Chris Gayle's record for most sixes in a single IPL season during the 2026 Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh, eventually finishing the season with 65 sixes, well clear of Gayle's 2012 mark of 59 (with Andre Russell's 52 in 2019, Gayle's own 51 in 2013, and Jos Buttler's 45 in 2022 rounding out the historical top five). Off the back of that IPL season — during which he won five individual awards — Sooryavanshi was selected for India's T20 squad for the Ireland and England tours and for the 2026 Asian Games, becoming, at 15 years and 71 days, the youngest player ever selected for the Indian men's cricket team, breaking a 36-year-old record held by Sachin Tendulkar (16 years, 205 days, on debut against Pakistan in 1989). He later added a third milestone, smashing the fastest fifty in List A cricket history — just 11 balls — during a Tri-Nation Series final between India A and Sri Lanka A at Rangiri Dambulla, Sri Lanka, breaking a 20-year-old record held by Sri Lanka's Kaushalya Weeratne (12 balls, 2005-06).

Other notable cricket milestones: Deepti Sharma became the joint-highest wicket-taker in women's international cricket, claiming her 355th international wicket during a T20 World Cup 2026 group match against the Netherlands at Headingley, Leeds — equalling former India captain Jhulan Goswami's record. Harmanpreet Kaur became the first cricketer, men's or women's, to play 200 T20 Internationals, achieving the milestone during India's Women's T20 World Cup 2026 match against South Africa at Old Trafford, Manchester. Kane Williamson, former New Zealand captain, announced his retirement from international cricket after a 16-year career, retiring as New Zealand's highest Test run-scorer (9,515 runs in 110 Tests at 54.06) and long regarded as one of the modern game's "Fab Four" batters alongside Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Joe Root. Ben Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket after England's third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, also stepping down as England's Test captain, a role he had held since April 2022. Separately, the International Cricket Council suspended Cricket Canada's membership with immediate effect over governance breaches, following scrutiny that included an April 2026 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation report.

16.2 Football

The FIFA World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, was the first edition to feature 48 teams, expanded from 32. Lionel Messi became the first footballer to appear in six FIFA World Cups, marking the milestone — exactly 20 years after his 2006 debut — by scoring a hat-trick as Argentina beat Algeria 3-0 in their Group J opener; he went on to become the tournament's all-time leading scorer with 18 goals, surpassing Miroslav Klose (16). The all-time top-scorer table now reads: Messi (Argentina, 18), Kylian Mbappé (France, 16) and Miroslav Klose (Germany, 16) tied for second, Ronaldo Nazário (Brazil, 15), Gerd Müller (West Germany, 14), Just Fontaine (France, 13), Pelé (Brazil, 12), and Jürgen Klinsmann (Germany) and Sándor Kocsis (Hungary) tied on 11. Argentina marked the occasion by unveiling a 26-metre statue of Messi near National Route 22 in Manuel Savio, Neuquén Province — the tallest Messi statue anywhere in the world. Cristiano Ronaldo, at 41, became the first player to score in six different World Cup editions, netting twice in Portugal's 5-0 win over Uzbekistan.

India did not qualify for the 2026 World Cup, finishing third in Group A behind Qatar and Kuwait in the Asian qualifiers' second round. Several players of Indian heritage are, however, representing other nations: Sarpreet Singh (New Zealand, of Jalandhar-origin parentage, ex-Bayern Munich), Tahsin Mohammed Jamshid (Qatar, family from Kannur, Kerala), and Nishan Velupillay (Australia, of Sri Lankan Tamil and Anglo-Indian heritage, from Melbourne Victory's youth system).

On the domestic front, India's women's team won a record-extending sixth South Asian Football Federation Women's Championship, beating Bangladesh 3-1 in the final at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Margao, Goa — ending a seven-year title drought (last won in 2019, having finished runners-up in the two prior editions). Individual honours went to Sanfida Nongrum (Most Valuable Player), Panthoi Chanu Elangbam (Best Goalkeeper), Aveka Singh (Top Scorer, 4 goals) and Nepal (Fair Play Award).

16.3 Other Individual and Team Sports

• Badminton: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the Singapore Open 2026 men's doubles title, becoming the first Indian pair to do so, defeating Indonesia's world No. 3 pair Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri 18-21, 21-17, 21-16 in a 73-minute final, ending a two-year wait for a BWF World Tour title.
• Wrestling: India won a record 27 medals (11 gold, 7 silver, 9 bronze) at the Under-23 Asian Wrestling Championships in Da Nang, Vietnam, with both the men's freestyle and women's teams topping their overall standings (Kyrgyzstan second, Kazakhstan third); gold medallists included Akshay T Dhere, Mohit Kumar, Chandermohan and Vicky Hooda in men's freestyle, and Muskan, Bhagyashree, Tapasya, Pulkit, Mansi and Kajal in women's wrestling. India's women wrestlers separately won 10 medals (2 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze) at the Under-17 Asian Wrestling Championships, achieving a 100% podium rate across every weight category contested — Diksha and Garima taking gold. At the Ulaanbaatar Open 2026 in Mongolia — the third United World Wrestling Ranking Series event of the season and an important Asian Games tune-up — India won 17 medals (8 gold, 9 bronze) across freestyle and Greco-Roman categories.
• Shooting: Esha Singh won gold in the women's 25m pistol event at the ISSF World Cup 2026 in Munich, setting a new world record of 43 points out of 50 in the final, surpassing South Korea's Kim Yeji's previous mark of 42 — India's first individual shooting medal of the 2026 ISSF World Cup season, and one that also secured her a spot in the ISSF World Cup Final in Rome (December 2026).
• Chess: R Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian to win the Norway Chess tournament, defeating Germany's Vincent Keymer in the final round after entering with 15 points and closing with 18, surpassing prior best Indian showings from Viswanathan Anand and reigning World Champion D Gukesh.
• Tennis: At the French Open 2026 (Roland-Garros), Alexander Zverev won his maiden Grand Slam title, beating Italy's Flavio Cobolli in a five-set men's singles final, while Mirra Andreeva won the women's singles, defeating Poland's Maja Chwalińska.
• Formula One: Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) won the Monaco Grand Prix 2026, his fifth consecutive win of the season, extending his championship lead; Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) and Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) completed the podium.
• Hockey: India's women won the FIH Nations Cup 2026, beating New Zealand 2-0 in the final — the country's second Nations Cup title, after the inaugural 2022 edition — and, crucially, secured promotion to the FIH Pro League, the top tier of annual international hockey. India's men's under-18 team won the Asia Cup 2026, beating hosts Japan 4-1 in the final at Kakamigahara (Pakistan took bronze).
• Athletics: India won 4 medals at the New Taipei City Athletics Open 2026 (a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver-level event, upgraded from Bronze this year), with Shaili Singh taking gold in the women's long jump (6.24m, beating Vietnam's Tran Thi Loan by a single centimetre), the women's 4x100m relay team (SS Sneha, Srabani Nanda, Sudeshna Shivankar, Tamanna) winning gold in 44.07 seconds (equalling the meet record), and Tejas Shirse winning silver in the men's 110m hurdles (13.50 seconds). • Boxing: India retained a strong showing in the World Boxing Rankings (covering July 2024–May 2026 performances), with Indian boxers featuring in the top 10 of 9 of 10 women's weight categories and 8 of 10 men's categories, ranking 3rd globally for the number of top-10 ranked boxers and 2nd in women's boxing worldwide; Jaismine Lamboria and Minakshi Hooda both reached World No. 1.
• Yogasana: At the inaugural World Yogasana Championship 2026, held at EKA Arena, Ahmedabad (4–8 June, 522 athletes from 79 countries), India topped the medal table with 114 medals (102 gold, 9 silver, 3 bronze), well clear of second-placed Japan (11 total medals).
• Junior Tennis: Bengaluru's Srishti Kiran, 13, became World No. 1 in the ITF Junior World Rankings' Under-13 category, after five consecutive ITF junior titles and a runner-up finish at the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors J100 Guatemala, reaching a career-high overall ITF junior ranking of No. 357 — the highest ever for an Under-13 player.

16.4 Recognition and Honours

Smriti Mandhana, India's women's cricket vice-captain, was the only Indian named to the TIME100 Most Influential People in Sports 2026 list, appearing alongside Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James, Carlos Alcaraz and Temba Bavuma. At the inaugural Indian Athletics Awards 2025, organised by the Athletics Federation of India in New Delhi, Neeraj Chopra was named Best Male Athlete and Parul Chaudhary Best Female Athlete, with lifetime achievement honours going to P. T. Usha, Gurbachan Singh Randhawa, Bahadur Singh Chauhan and Anju Bobby George; other honourees included Shahnavaz Khan and Pooja Singh (Best Emerging Athletes), Parveer Singh (Best Coach), Dr. Kuldeep Singh (Best Technical Official), and the Tamil Nadu Athletics Association (Best State Association).
