The Exam Trap — Symbols That Aren't Official
Free study material · concepts, shortcuts & solved questions
India has no officially notified national game. Hockey is popularly and traditionally regarded as India's national sport because of the country's historic dominance — six consecutive Olympic gold medals, 1928–1956 — but the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports confirmed via a 2012 RTI reply that no sport has ever been formally declared the national game. This is one of the most frequently tested "gotcha" facts in static GK.
Likewise, the Pumpkin is often cited informally as India's "national vegetable" in GK material, but this has not been officially notified by the Government of India either — treat it as commonly stated, not constitutionally confirmed.
Exam trap: If a question asks "which of the following is NOT an official national symbol of India," the safe answers are almost always National Game and National Vegetable.
