Ratio and Proportion is one of the foundation chapters of Quantitative Aptitude — it is not just a topic in itself but the working machinery behind several other high-scoring chapters. In SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS and RRB NTPC/Group D exams, you can expect 2 to 4 direct questions from Ratio and Proportion every year, but the real payoff is much larger: Partnership, Average, Mixture and Alligation, Ages, and even parts of Time-Speed-Distance and Time-and-Work are solved faster once you are fluent in ratio manipulation. A weak grip on this chapter quietly drags down your score in four or five other chapters as well.

The difficulty level of direct Ratio and Proportion questions in SSC and RRB exams is generally easy to moderate, with only componendo-dividendo based algebraic questions and compound partnership problems reaching a slightly higher difficulty. Basic Tier-1 papers (SSC CHSL, MTS, RRB NTPC/Group D) test straightforward division of a quantity, simple partnership, and mean/third/fourth proportional. Tier-2 and CGL papers push further into chained ratios (a:b:c:d), compound partnership with capital withdrawn/added mid-year, and ratio combined with percentage change — exactly the pattern this chapter is built around.

Because ratio is a “comparison” tool, it silently sits inside almost every word problem you will face in the quant section. Learning to convert a percentage into a ratio, or a ratio into an algebraic multiplier (the “x” trick), is possibly the single highest-leverage skill in the entire syllabus. This chapter builds that skill from the ground up — definitions, properties, all types of proportion, partnership, age-ratio problems, and ratio-percentage combination questions — followed by dedicated shortcut tricks, a common-mistakes list, and 50 fully solved practice questions in the exact style of SSC and RRB papers.

Another reason this chapter deserves focused revision time is that it rarely requires long calculations once the setup is correct — most of the marks are lost not because the arithmetic is hard but because the initial equation is set up wrong (direct vs inverse confusion, wrong LCM bridging in continued ratios, or applying simple-partnership logic to a compound-partnership question). This makes Ratio and Proportion an ideal “accuracy improvement” chapter: a few hours of disciplined practice on setting up the ratio correctly can convert previously “50-50 guess” questions into guaranteed correct attempts, which directly improves your accuracy percentage — a metric that matters as much as raw attempts in the SSC/RRB scoring pattern (many of these exams carry negative marking of 0.25 to 0.50 per wrong answer).
