1. Component (part-value) method for dividing a sum in a ratio. Instead of computing each share by long multiplication, find the “value of 1 part” first (Total ÷ sum of ratio terms), then just multiply. E.g., divide ₹4500 in ratio 4:5:6 → 1 part = 4500/15 = 300 → shares = 1200, 1500, 1800 instantly.

2. “% more/less” to ratio conversion, done mentally. “x% more than” → (100+x):100; “x% less than” → (100−x):100. E.g., “A’s salary is 35% more than B’s” → A:B = 135:100 = 27:20 — no equation-writing needed.

3. Reverse componendo-dividendo for direct ratio extraction. If (a+b)/(a−b) = p/q, then a:b = (p+q):(p−q) immediately — skip the algebra entirely. E.g., (a+b)/(a−b)=5/3 → a:b = 8:2 = 4:1.

4. Investment × Time as a single “weight” in partnership. Never divide profit by raw investment when durations differ — always first multiply investment by months invested to get a single comparable number, then treat it exactly like a simple ratio-division problem. When a partner changes their investment mid-year (adds or withdraws capital), split their contribution into separate capital×time blocks for each period and add them together before forming the final ratio — this single habit eliminates almost all errors in compound partnership questions (see Example 34).

5. Mean proportional shortcut: just take √(product). No need to set up b² = ac each time — mean proportional between a and c is simply √(ac). Between 8 and 18: √144 = 12 instantly (recognise 8×18=144, a perfect square).

6. Third and fourth proportional — one-line cross multiplication. Third proportional to a, b: answer = b²/a. Fourth proportional to a, b, c: answer = bc/a. Memorize these as direct formulas rather than re-deriving the proportion each time.

7. Continued ratio bridging via LCM — always scale the common term. When combining a:b and b:c, find the LCM of the two “b” values and scale both ratios to match it. This avoids fraction errors and works for any number of chained ratios (a:b:c:d:e…).

8. Verifying a proportion instantly via cross-product, not decimal conversion. To check if a:b :: c:d, just test ad = bc. This is faster and error-free compared to converting to decimals, especially with 3-4 digit numbers.

9. The “x-multiplier” trick for all ratio word problems (especially ages). Whenever a ratio a:b is given for unknown actual quantities, always write them as ax and bx (one single variable). This converts any “ratio + extra condition” word problem into a simple one-variable linear equation. The same trick extends naturally to three or more quantities in a continued ratio (ax, bx, cx), and to problems where the ratio itself is fractional (e.g., ratio 1/2 : 1/3 becomes 3x : 2x after clearing denominators, then the multiplier trick applies as usual).

10. Percentage-of-total shortcut for split-group problems. When a total is split in ratio m:n and different percentages of each group satisfy some condition, don’t compute actual numbers with big totals — assume total = (m+n) parts (i.e., use x as multiplier) and compute the percentage directly as done in Example 43. The x cancels out, saving time.

11. Compound ratio shortcut for combining more than two ratios. To combine a:b, c:d, e:f into one compound ratio, just multiply all first terms together and all second terms together: (a×c×e) : (b×d×f). No need to combine two at a time.
