The Birth of Indian Railways
The first passenger train in India ran on 16 April 1853, between Bori Bunder (Bombay, now Mumbai) and Thane, covering a distance of about 34 kilometres. The railways grew under private companies operating on contracts guaranteed by the colonial government in the 19th century; this system was gradually phased out in favour of direct state management through the early 20th century, culminating in full nationalisation after Independence.

Divisions
