Why This Chapter Matters

Important days and dates form one of the most predictable sections of SSC GD and RPF Constable GS papers — questions are typically a straightforward "which day is observed on X date" or "what does Y day mark," and the pool of frequently asked dates is fairly limited and stable year after year. This chapter organises the most exam-relevant national and international observances month by month so you can revise them quickly and reliably.

Days Related to Defence and Security Forces

Since RPF and SSC GD candidates are entering security services, days connected with the armed forces and police deserve special attention:

  • Police Commemoration Day — 21 October: Observed across Indian police forces to honour police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, commemorating the 1959 Hot Springs incident in Ladakh where CRPF personnel were killed.
  • Indian Coast Guard Day — 1 February: Marks the establishment of the Indian Coast Guard in 1977.
  • Merchant Navy Week: Observed around National Maritime Day in early April, recognising the contribution of the merchant navy.
  • Infantry Day — 27 October: Commemorates the day Indian troops were airlifted to Srinagar in 1947 to defend Jammu and Kashmir.

Tips for Remembering Dates

Group dates by theme rather than trying to memorise them as an unconnected list. Health-related international days (World Health Day, World Cancer Day, World TB Day, World AIDS Day) cluster logically; environment-related days (World Environment Day, World Water Day, World Ozone Day, Earth Day) form another cluster; and India's own freedom-struggle and leader-birthday observances (Gandhi Jayanti, Ambedkar Jayanti, Teachers' Day, Children's Day) form a third. Anchoring each date to the person or founding event it commemorates, rather than memorising the number alone, sharply reduces confusion between similar-sounding days.

Common Exam Traps

  • World Health Day (7 April) is often confused with National Health Day observances in India — remember 7 April is the WHO's founding anniversary, an international, not national, observance.
  • Two "Martyrs' Days" exist in the Indian calendar — 30 January (Gandhi's assassination) and 23 March (execution of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev) — a very common point of confusion.
  • Do not mix up Kargil Vijay Diwas (26 July, 1999 war) with Vijay Diwas (16 December, 1971 war) — they mark victories in two different wars, decades apart.
  • National Voters' Day (25 January) and Republic Day (26 January) fall on consecutive dates and are easily confused in rapid-fire question formats.
