Six states recur so often across every section of this book — soil, crop, irrigation, Green Revolution geography, and river-valley projects all point back to the same handful of states — that pulling each into a single consolidated profile is worth the redundancy: it lets you check your cross-topic recall against one state at a time rather than only ever recalling facts topic by topic.

Punjab — The Green Revolution's Home Ground

Soil: overwhelmingly alluvial, among the most fertile and intensively cultivated in the country. Climate: semi-arid, low natural rainfall, meaning its entire rice-wheat success is irrigation-built rather than rainfall-built. Crops: wheat (highest yield in India), rice (grown almost entirely on canal/tubewell irrigation despite low natural rainfall, exactly the paradox flagged in the Rice entry earlier), basmati rice (GI-tagged belt), cotton (southwestern districts). Irrigation: tube-well-dominant with strong canal support (Bhakra-Nangal system); highest cropping intensity in India. Green Revolution: the original and most complete success story, and simultaneously ground zero for the groundwater-depletion and soil-salinity criticisms covered in that section. River-valley project: Bhakra-Nangal (Sutlej) and the Indira Gandhi Canal's Sutlej-Beas source both trace to Punjab's rivers even though the canal's main beneficiary land lies in Rajasthan.

Uttar Pradesh — The Volume Leader

Soil: alluvial across almost the entire state (Bhangar and Khadar both well represented), with a red-soil fringe only in the southern Bundelkhand region. Crops: India's largest wheat producer, largest sugarcane producer (by tonnage), largest potato producer, and among the top rice producers — a state that leads more individual crop tables than any other in this book precisely because of its sheer alluvial-plain size and population. Irrigation: largest absolute tube-well-irrigated area of any state. Madhya Pradesh — The Black-Soil and Pulse Heartland

Soil: black/regur soil across the Malwa plateau, red-yellow soil in Bundelkhand/Baghelkhand to the east. Crops: India's largest gram (chickpea) producer, a leading soybean producer, and a major wheat producer under irrigation on its black-soil tracts. Irrigation and river-valley projects: the Chambal Valley Project cascade (Gandhi Sagar, Rana Pratap Sagar, Jawahar Sagar) and the Narmada basin's upstream stretch (feeding into Sardar Sarovar downstream in Gujarat) both run through MP. Maharashtra — The Cash-Crop and Micro-Irrigation Leader

Soil: the largest single-state area of black/regur soil (the Deccan Trap's core), with a laterite strip along the Konkan coast. Crops: leading sugar-recovery efficiency state (though UP leads by raw cane tonnage), a major cotton producer, India's leading onion-producing state (Nashik belt), leading grape and pomegranate producer, and a major banana producer. Irrigation: fastest-growing drip/micro-irrigation adoption in India, driven by its horticulture and cash-crop mix. River-valley projects: Koyna (largest hydel installation for decades) and the upstream Godavari basin (Maharashtra is the river's source state, even though the Krishna-Godavari delta itself lies in Andhra Pradesh downstream).

Tamil Nadu — The Tank-Irrigation and Delta-Rice State

Soil: predominantly red and yellow soil, with an alluvial patch in the Kaveri delta (Thanjavur, the state's "rice bowl"). Crops: distinctive Kuruvai/Samba/Thaladi/Navarai rice-cropping calendar tied to the northeast monsoon; Nilgiris tea; a leading coffee-growing state alongside Karnataka and Kerala. Irrigation: historically the most tank-irrigation-dependent major state, alongside the Mettur Dam's canal-fed delta. River-valley project and dispute: Mettur Dam (Kaveri) and the long-running Kaveri water-sharing dispute with Karnataka; also the receiving end of the Periyar Dam's inter-basin diversion from Kerala.

Kerala — The Plantation and Laterite State

Soil: overwhelmingly laterite, with a peaty/alluvial pocket in the Kuttanad backwater region (below-sea-level rice cultivation). Crops: overwhelmingly dominant in natural rubber, a leading producer of black pepper and cardamom, and historically the launch point of Europe's spice trade with India via the Malabar coast. Irrigation and river-valley project: the Periyar Dam (1895) sits physically in Kerala but irrigates Tamil Nadu — Kerala's own irrigation needs are comparatively modest given its heavy natural rainfall. Current-affairs link: Kuttanad's peaty, waterlogged soil makes it one of the few places in the world where rice is grown below sea level, a geography fact that recurs in both soil-type and crop-geography questions.

Rajasthan — Arid Soil Meeting an Improbable Canal

Soil: overwhelmingly arid/desert (Thar) in the west, with a black-soil fringe in the southeast (bordering Madhya Pradesh's Malwa plateau) and alluvial soil in the northeast (Ganganagar-Hanumangarh, precisely the Indira Gandhi Canal command area). Crops: India's leading bajra and mustard producer, and a major producer of gram, guar, and moth bean on its driest tracts. Irrigation: the state most defined in this book by a single project — the Indira Gandhi Canal, which has converted a meaningful share of the Thar's naturally uncultivable land into wheat-and-cotton cropland, at the acknowledged long-term cost of waterlogging/salinity risk in a high-evaporation desert climate. Gujarat — Black Soil, Cotton, and the Narmada's Terminus

Soil: black/regur soil across Saurashtra and mainland Gujarat, arid/saline soil in Kutch, alluvial soil along the river valleys. Crops: India's leading cotton producer for many recent years, a leading groundnut producer, and the dominant castor producer by an overwhelming margin. Irrigation and river-valley project: the terminus state of the Narmada Valley Project — Sardar Sarovar's canal network is Gujarat's single most transformative irrigation asset, specifically targeting the drought-prone Saurashtra and Kutch regions that would otherwise depend almost entirely on unreliable monsoon rainfall. Current-affairs link: Gujarat's Amul cooperative dairy model is the namesake success story of the White Revolution referenced in the Green Revolution section's "family of revolutions" discussion, making Gujarat one of the few states this book credits with leading roles in two different agricultural "revolutions" (White, and a strong cotton/groundnut Green Revolution-adjacent story).

Karnataka — The Plateau State With Three Soil Stories at Once

Soil: red and yellow soil across the Mysore plateau and Bayaluseeme tract, black soil in the north Karnataka Krishna-basin districts, and laterite soil along the Malnad/coastal belt — arguably the state with the most internally varied soil geography covered in this book. Crops: India's dominant coffee producer (Kodagu/Coorg and Chikmagalur), a leading ragi (finger millet) and jowar producer, and a significant maize and areca nut producer. Irrigation: a mix of traditional tank irrigation (Deccan plateau tradition) and major canal systems on the Krishna-Cauvery basin (Tungabhadra, Almatti, Malaprabha, Ghataprabha). Andhra Pradesh and Telangana — The Delta and the Plateau, Split by Bifurcation

Soil: red-yellow soil dominates the Telangana plateau (the state's undivided history as a mostly rain-fed, tank-irrigated tract); black soil and alluvial deltaic soil dominate coastal Andhra Pradesh, particularly the Krishna-Godavari delta. Crops: leading chilli and turmeric producer (specifically the Guntur belt for chilli), a leading rice producer from the delta tracts, and (post-bifurcation) both states remain major cotton and maize producers. Irrigation: Nagarjuna Sagar and the historic Arthur Cotton-era Krishna-Godavari anicut system anchor coastal Andhra Pradesh's canal irrigation, while Telangana's plateau has historically leaned on tank irrigation, more recently supplemented by large lift-irrigation schemes drawing Godavari water uphill onto the plateau. Current-affairs link: this is the one state-pair in this book whose "state" boundary itself changed within recent history (the 2014 bifurcation into Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), a useful reminder that even a settled-seeming geography fact can have a recent administrative history worth knowing.

West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, and Odisha — The Eastern Belt the Green Revolution Bypassed

These four states are grouped together deliberately, since their shared story — fertile alluvial soil, high rainfall, but comparatively limited Green Revolution-era irrigation investment — is itself the exam-relevant point rather than any one state's individual profile. West Bengal: alluvial soil across almost the entire state, India's leading rice producer (approx.) and overwhelmingly dominant jute producer, home to Darjeeling tea and the historic Hooghly jute-mill belt, and the site of the Farakka Barrage's silt-management role for Kolkata Port. Bihar: alluvial soil throughout, with a peaty Kosi tract in the north; a major maize, litchi (Muzaffarpur), and vegetable producer, and historically the site of the flood-control-focused Kosi Project — a joint India-Nepal undertaking on a river nicknamed "the sorrow of Bihar" for its historic flooding. Assam: alluvial soil in the Brahmaputra valley; India's dominant tea producer by volume and a significant rice and jute producer, with the Northeastern hill states' shifting/jhum cultivation pattern bordering its own more settled valley agriculture. Odisha: red-yellow and laterite soil across the plateau, alluvial soil in the Mahanadi delta; the site of the Hirakud Dam (the world's longest dam at completion), and a state whose Mahanadi-delta flood-control story parallels West Bengal's Damodar-basin flood story in the "why was this project built" logic covered in the River Valley Projects section. The Green Revolution's Phase II (1980s onward) specifically targeted extending HYV technology into exactly this eastern belt, with only partial success compared to Phase I's transformation of Punjab/Haryana/western UP — a gap in outcomes this book's Green Revolution section already flags as one of the movement's most persistent criticisms.

Himachal Pradesh/Jammu & Kashmir, the Northeastern Hill States, and Chhattisgarh/Jharkhand — Three More Profiles Worth a Quick Pass

Rounding out the state-by-state picture, three further groupings recur often enough in state-specific questions to deserve at least a compact entry each, even where they don't carry the same sheer weight of individual-crop leadership as the twelve profiles above. Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir: forest/mountain soil varying sharply by altitude, a temperate-fruit specialism (apple above all, as covered in the Fruits section, alongside stone fruits like peach, plum, and apricot), and horticulture-focused irrigation investment rather than the canal-and-tubewell model of the plains — HP's apple economy is concentrated enough regionally (Shimla, Kullu districts) to function almost like a single-crop cash economy for large parts of the state, a rare degree of crop concentration outside the plantation-crop states. The Northeastern hill states (Assam already profiled separately above; the remaining seven — Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim): forest/mountain soil, heavy rainfall, jhum/shifting cultivation still practised across substantial tribal-upland tracts (the erosion-and-conservation angle covered earlier), horticultural specialisation (Sikkim's organic-state status and large cardamom, covered earlier; Tripura's rubber diversification, covered under Rubber), and — via Arunachal Pradesh specifically — India's largest estimated untapped hydropower potential, covered in the Irrigation Projects section's Northeastern hydro sub-section. Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand: predominantly red-yellow soil with a laterite plateau fringe, historically part of undivided Madhya Pradesh and Bihar respectively before their early-2000s creation as separate states, both significant rice producers (Chhattisgarh in particular is sometimes informally called a "rice bowl" of central India) and both hosting tribal-belt minor-millet cultivation (kodo, kutki, covered earlier) on their poorer plateau soils, alongside Jharkhand's specific role in India's tussar (wild) silk geography, covered in the Sericulture sub-section.
