Multi-purpose river valley projects combine irrigation with hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and (often) navigation and water supply — a model pioneered in India directly inspired by the American Tennessee Valley Authority and championed as a symbol of post-independence development under Jawaharlal Nehru, who famously called such dams "the temples of modern India."

Bhakra-Nangal, on the Sutlej in Himachal Pradesh/Punjab, was among independent India's earliest and most celebrated river valley projects, its Bhakra Dam ranking among the world's highest gravity dams at the time of completion; its irrigation network is a direct physical enabler of the Green Revolution belt described earlier, since Punjab and Haryana's canal-fed wheat and rice fields draw substantially from this single system.
Hirakud Dam, on the Mahanadi in Odisha, was the longest dam of its type in the world when completed (its main dam plus dykes stretch several kilometres) and was built primarily as a flood-control response to the Mahanadi's history of devastating deltaic floods, with irrigation and hydropower as parallel benefits.
The Damodar Valley Corporation, established in 1948, is explicitly India's first river valley authority and its most direct copy of the American TVA model — the Damodar was historically nicknamed "the river of sorrow" in Bengal for its catastrophic flooding, and DVC's dam cascade (Tilaiya, Konar, Maithon, Panchet, among others) was built specifically to tame it while also irrigating and electrifying the Bengal-Bihar/Jharkhand industrial belt.
The Indira Gandhi Canal, drawing from the Sutlej-Beas system via the Harike Barrage in Punjab, is one of the world's longest irrigation canals and is the single most direct case in this book of irrigation overriding a soil/climate constraint rather than working with it — it has converted substantial tracts of the Thar's naturally arid soil into productive cropland across Rajasthan's Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, and Bikaner districts, at the cost of significant long-term concerns about waterlogging and salinity in a desert climate with very high evaporation.
Sardar Sarovar Dam, the terminal (final, downstream-most) dam on the Narmada, is simultaneously one of India's most consequential irrigation/power projects for Gujarat's drought-prone Saurashtra and Kutch regions and one of its most politically fraught, having been the focal point of the Narmada Bachao Andolan — a decades-long protest movement (prominently associated with activist Medha Patkar) over large-scale displacement of tribal and rural communities without adequate resettlement, making it a recurring case study in exam questions about development-induced displacement as much as about irrigation engineering.
Tehri Dam, on the Bhagirathi (one of the Ganga's two headwater tributaries) in Uttarakhand, is among India's tallest dams and was itself controversial for submerging the historic town of old Tehri, but supplies substantial hydropower plus irrigation and drinking-water benefit that extends downstream to Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
Nagarjuna Sagar, on the Krishna river spanning the Andhra Pradesh-Telangana border, is among the world's largest masonry (as opposed to concrete or earthen) dams and irrigates a large share of the Krishna delta, alongside the older, colonial-era Krishna-Godavari delta anicut system built by British engineer Sir Arthur Cotton in the mid-19th century — a system still cited today for having converted the Krishna-Godavari delta into one of India's most productive rice tracts well before independence.

The Periyar Dam is a useful reminder that not every river-valley project irrigates the basin it dams — built by the British in 1895 specifically to solve Madras Presidency's water needs, it diverts Periyar river water (which naturally flows west into the Arabian Sea through Kerala) eastward through a tunnel into the Vaigai basin, so that a dam physically located in Kerala primarily irrigates Tamil Nadu — a configuration that has made it one of India's longest-running interstate water disputes. Farakka Barrage, completed in 1975, is not primarily an irrigation project but a navigation/silt-management one, diverting Ganga water into the Hooghly to keep Kolkata Port's channel navigable — its operation is governed by the India-Bangladesh Ganga Waters Treaty of 1996, since the same diversion affects downstream flow into Bangladesh, making it one of the few Indian river projects with a live international-treaty dimension worth remembering alongside its domestic purpose.
