Mountain geography in this belt is inseparable from border security, because nearly every pass and glacier covered above sits within a day's march of an international boundary that is itself disputed, poorly demarcated, or the site of a recent standoff. Examiners lean on this overlap constantly, so treat the geography and the current affairs as one connected story, not two.

Siachen: the world's highest battlefield. The Siachen Glacier's dispute exists because of an ambiguity in the 1972 Simla Agreement, which defined the Line of Control only up to a point called NJ9842 and then described the boundary running merely "thence north to the glaciers" — without naming which ridge line that phrase actually followed. Pakistan and India each read that gap differently, and by the early 1980s both sides were racing to establish a physical presence on the Saltoro Ridge overlooking the glacier. India launched Operation Meghdoot on 13 April 1984, airlifting troops onto the Saltoro Ridge passes and securing effective control of the entire glacier and its main approaches — control India has held ever since, at enormous logistical and human cost (extreme altitude and cold have caused more casualties over the decades than actual combat). Repeated attempts to negotiate a mutual withdrawal or demilitarisation have not succeeded, chiefly because India is unwilling to vacate without a mutually agreed, verifiable boundary alignment first — a classic exam "why hasn't this been resolved" answer. A question that asks "which pass connects X and Y" is almost always asking about a motorable pass; a question that names a pass in the context of a trek or expedition is very likely referring to a trekking-only crossing — reading which register a question is using often resolves an otherwise uncertain answer.

Doklam: a 2017 standoff with a Sikkim-pass connection. In mid-2017, Indian and Chinese troops faced off for over two months on the Doklam plateau, a piece of territory disputed between China and Bhutan (with which India has a security understanding) near the Sikkim-Bhutan-Tibet tri-junction — geographically just south of the Nathu La/Jelep La pass corridor covered above. The trigger was a Chinese road-building attempt into the plateau, which India viewed as a threat to the security of the narrow "Chicken's Neck" (Siliguri Corridor) linking the northeast to the rest of India; both sides eventually agreed to a mutual pull-back. Doklam is a useful reminder that this book's Sikkim passes are not merely trade or tourism geography — they sit inside one of the most sensitive tri-junction zones on the entire border.

Aksai Chin and the Karakoram Pass area — the other major boundary dispute this book touches. The Kargil connection: why Zoji La and Dras matter beyond tourism. Glacial retreat and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs): the climate-change dimension. Nearly every major Himalayan glacier named in this book — Gangotri most prominently, but also Kolahoi, Zemu, and the smaller Kumaon glaciers — has been the subject of repeated scientific studies documenting measurable retreat over recent decades, a trend widely attributed to regional warming. The practical hazard this creates is the glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF): as glaciers retreat, meltwater often collects behind unstable natural dams of loose glacial debris (moraine) rather than solid rock, and when such a dam breaches suddenly — from an earthquake, a landslide into the lake, or simply accumulated pressure — the resulting flash flood can be catastrophic far downstream. The 2013 Kedarnath disaster, triggered by the breach of the moraine-dammed lake fed by the Chorabari Glacier after extreme rainfall, and the 2021 Chamoli disaster, triggered by a rock-ice avalanche associated with glacial instability near Nanda Devi that swept down the Rishiganga and damaged hydropower infrastructure, are both frequently cited case studies tying this book's glacier geography directly to disaster-management current affairs. The National Disaster Management Authority and international bodies now maintain watch-lists of high-risk glacial lakes across the Himalaya specifically because of this recurring hazard pattern.

Lipulekh and the India-Nepal-China friction. As covered in the Uttarakhand passes section, Lipulekh sits inside the long-running Kalapani-Limpiyadhura-Lipulekh dispute between India and Nepal, which flares periodically — including around Indian road-building to the pass and around India-China agreements to use the pass for border trade, both of which Nepal has formally protested in recent years.
