Passes and Peaks Outside the Himalayas

Not every pass and peak this exam tests sits in the Himalaya — the Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats, and Aravalli ranges each contribute their own recurring "highest peak" and "important pass" questions, and are frequently confused with their Himalayan counterparts precisely because the vocabulary (ghat, pass, peak) sounds the same.

Western Ghats passes. The Western Ghats run as a nearly continuous wall along India's west coast, which is exactly why the handful of genuine breaks in that wall carry outsized transport and climatic importance.

Eastern Ghats. Unlike the continuous Western Ghats, the Eastern Ghats are a broken, discontinuous series of hill ranges cut through by several major east-flowing rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri), so the range has no single iconic "pass" in the way the Western Ghats do — the rivers themselves have simply carved wide gaps as they cross toward the Bay of Bengal. This discontinuity is itself a frequently tested contrast: "which Ghats range is continuous and which is broken" is a recurring one-line question, and the answer is Western Ghats (continuous) versus Eastern Ghats (discontinuous, broken by rivers). The Eastern Ghats' own highest point, Mahendragiri (in Odisha, at roughly 1,500 m), is a useful pairing to hold alongside Guru Shikhar and Anamudi below — three "highest peak of a non-Himalayan range" facts that are frequently tested as a set.

Aravalli Range — Guru Shikhar. Guru Shikhar, near Mount Abu in Sirohi district, Rajasthan, at approximately 1,722 m, is the highest peak of the Aravalli Range — and, since the Aravallis are among the oldest fold mountains in the world (older than the Himalaya by a wide margin, believed to have formed well over a billion years ago and since eroded down to relatively low, rounded hills), Guru Shikhar is a frequent contrast case for "old, eroded, low mountains" versus the Himalaya's "young, still-rising, high mountains." The Aravallis run roughly northeast-southwest across Rajasthan into Haryana and Delhi (the low ridges within Delhi, including the one behind Delhi Ridge, are geologically the Aravallis' final trailing edge), making this range relevant well beyond Rajasthan alone.

Western Ghats / South India — Anamudi. Anamudi, inside Eravikulam National Park near Munnar, Kerala, at approximately 2,695 m, is the highest peak of the Western Ghats and of South India, and indeed the highest point in India south of the Himalaya — sometimes nicknamed the "Everest of South India" for its regional prominence even though its absolute elevation is modest next to the Himalayan giants covered earlier in this book. Two further South Indian superlatives are commonly tested alongside Anamudi: Doddabetta, near Ooty in the Nilgiri Hills (Tamil Nadu), at roughly 2,637 m, is the highest peak of the Nilgiri Hills specifically (a sub-range of the Western Ghats, distinct from the Anamalai Hills where Anamudi itself sits); and the Palani Hills, another Western Ghats sub-range in Tamil Nadu, are home to hill stations like Kodaikanal. Knowing that Anamudi, Doddabetta, and the Palani Hills are three different sub-ranges of the same broader Western Ghats system — not three names for the same place — resolves a surprisingly common source of confusion.

The Vindhya and Satpura ranges — a brief mention. Two more ranges occasionally appear alongside this topic's core list: the Vindhya Range, running roughly east-west across central India and traditionally regarded as the symbolic boundary between "North India" and "South India" in classical geography, and the Satpura Range, running parallel to and south of the Vindhyas, separating the Narmada and Tapi river valleys. Neither range produces a headline "highest peak" fact of the same exam weight as Guru Shikhar or Anamudi, but both are useful to place correctly on a mental map of India's non-Himalayan uplands, alongside the Aravallis (northwest), the Western Ghats (west coast), and the Eastern Ghats (east coast, broken).
