Glaciers matter to this exam topic for three overlapping reasons: they are the literal source of India's great rivers, they are visible symbols of Himalayan climate change (retreat rates are a live current-affairs theme), and one of them — Siachen — is also a militarised, disputed piece of ground. Treat each entry below as carrying all three angles at once rather than as a single geography fact.

India's glacial cover is concentrated almost entirely in three belts that map directly onto the range system covered earlier in this book: the Karakoram/eastern Ladakh belt (Siachen, Drang-Drung, and the Rimo-massif glaciers, all feeding the Indus system), the Garhwal-Kumaon belt in Uttarakhand (Gangotri, Yamunotri, Satopanth, Chorabari, Pindari, Milam, all feeding the Ganga system), and the Himachal-Sikkim belt at the two ends of the middle Himalaya (Bara/Chhota Shigri feeding the Chenab in the west, Zemu feeding the Teesta in the east). According to figures cited by India's Space Applications Centre and the Geological Survey of India, the country holds several thousand glaciers (a commonly cited figure is upward of 9,000, with some remote-sensing inventories citing over 16,000 once very small ice bodies are included) — the exact count depends heavily on the minimum size threshold a given survey uses, which is worth remembering if a question quotes a specific total.

Chorabari Above Kedarnath town, Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand Small Mandakini River → Alaknanda → Ganga The glacier whose meltwater feeds Gandhi Sarovar (Chorabari Tal) just above Kedarnath temple; the catastrophic breach of this moraine-dammed lake after extreme rainfall in June 2013 triggered the Kedarnath flash floods, one of India's worst Himalayan disasters in decades and a standing reference point in any discussion of glacial-lake and flash-flood hazard in this belt

Exam caution: Glacier lengths, especially Siachen's, are reported with real variation across sources (commonly 70–76 km) depending on survey date and measurement method, and the "second-longest non-polar glacier in the world" ranking is itself sometimes challenged by sources measuring differently or citing a different comparison set. Learn the commonly-cited figure, phrase it as approximate, and don't stake a close numeric question on the exact kilometre.

Memory hook — the river-source chain: "Gangotri gives the Ganga (via Bhagirathi), Yamunotri gives the Yamuna, Zemu gives the Teesta, Pindari and Milam both feed the Ganga system from Kumaon, Shigri (both Bara and Chhota) feeds the Chenab." Say each as a two-word chant — glacier-river — and the pairing becomes one unit, not two facts.

Practice Recall: Name the glacier that is the traditional source of the Ganga, the one that is India's most closely instrumented benchmark glacier for climate monitoring, and the one that is widely cited as the world's second-longest non-polar glacier.

Answer: Gangotri (Ganga source, via Bhagirathi and Gaumukh); Chhota Shigri (benchmark monitoring glacier); Siachen (second-longest non-polar glacier, a ranking some sources still debate).
