The Himalayan Range System: A Primer

Before any list of passes or peaks makes sense, the range system they sit inside needs to be genuinely understood, not just named. This is the section most revisers skip and most exams quietly assume you've read.

The Himalaya is not one range — it is three parallel walls, running roughly northwest to southeast, each younger and lower than the one behind it as you move south. Picture them as three ridges of a folded carpet, pushed up in stages as the Indian Plate has driven north into the Eurasian Plate for the last 50 million years and continues to do so today (which is also why the Himalaya is still rising, and why the region remains seismically active).

  • Himadri, or the Greater Himalayas (also called the Inner Himalayas). The northernmost and by far the highest of the three, with a continuous crest line rarely dropping below 6,000 m and holding essentially every 7,000-plus and 8,000-plus metre peak on Indian territory — Kangchenjunga, Nanda Devi, Kamet, and the giants of the Karakoram-adjacent zone all rise from this range. It is composed of the oldest, most intensely folded rock in the system and carries a permanent snow line; nearly every major glacier covered later in this book (Gangotri, Zemu, Yamunotri) originates from Himadri ice.
  • Himachal, or the Lesser Himalayas (Middle Himalayas). South of and lower than the Himadri, typically 3,700–4,500 m, made of highly compressed sedimentary and metamorphic rock. This is the belt of India's best-known hill stations — Shimla, Mussoorie, Darjeeling, Nainital — because its elevation is high enough for a temperate climate but low enough for comfortable habitation and access. The Pir Panjal Range (see below) is usually classed as part of this middle belt in the northwest.
  • Shivalik, or the Outer Himalayas (Sub-Himalayas). The southernmost and youngest of the three, a low, discontinuous belt of foothills rarely above 1,500 m, made of unconsolidated sediment eroded off the two ranges behind it — geologically, the Shivaliks are literally the older Himalaya's own debris, which is why the rock is so much softer and more easily eroded than the Himadri's. Longitudinal valleys called duns (Dehradun is the most famous) sit between the Shivaliks and the Lesser Himalayas.

Memory hook: "High Himadri, Middle Himachal, Shivalik at the Skirt" — H-H-M-S-S in that north-to-south order tells you which range is highest (Himadri, north) and which is youngest and lowest (Shivalik, south, literally the skirt of debris at the foot of the other two).

Beyond these three parallel walls, four more ranges matter for this topic and sit outside the Himadri-Himachal-Shivalik system, mostly to its north and northwest:

  • The Karakoram Range, north of the Himalaya proper across the Indus, is technically a separate mountain system (not part of the Himalaya at all, though popular usage often blurs the two) and contains India's most heavily glaciated terrain, including the Siachen Glacier and peaks like Saltoro Kangri and Saser Kangri. K2, the world's second-highest peak, rises from the Karakoram just outside Indian-administered territory in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan.
  • The Zaskar Range runs roughly parallel to and south of the main Ladakh range, separating the Zanskar Valley from the Indus Valley, and carries a string of high passes used by trekkers and traditionally by traders.
  • The Ladakh Range runs between the Indus and Shyok rivers, north of the Zaskar Range, and is where Khardung La and Chang La — the classic "world's highest motorable pass" claimants — are cut.
  • The Pir Panjal Range, the southernmost and outermost range of the Kashmir Himalaya, separates the Kashmir Valley from the Jammu plains and the Punjab; Banihal Pass and the Pir Panjal Pass proper are cut through this range, making it the first major barrier a traveller from the plains meets on the way to Srinagar.

Memory hook: "Karakoram's cold shoulder, Zaskar zig-zags south of it, Ladakh links Indus to Shyok, Pir Panjal protects the valley" — K-Z-L-P, the four "extra" ranges, each doing a distinct geographic job around the core three-wall Himalayan system.

A word on nomenclature: "La" and other recurring pass-name syllables. Once you notice it, a large share of this book's pass names share a common structural feature: "La" is simply the Tibetan/Ladakhi word for "pass," which is why so many Ladakh, Sikkim, and Arunachal crossings end in it — Zoji La, Khardung La, Chang La, Nathu La, Jelep La, Bum La, Se La are all, quite literally, "[Name]-Pass" rather than a single indivisible proper noun. This is worth knowing for two reasons: first, it means you can often recognise an unfamiliar name as a pass on sight even if a question doesn't say so explicitly; second, it explains why passes in Jammu, Himachal, and Uttarakhand (Banihal Pass, Rohtang Pass, Mana Pass) instead use the English/Hindi word "Pass" outright — the naming convention tracks the region's dominant local language (Tibetan-influenced Ladakhi, Sikkimese, and Monpa in the northeast; Hindi/Pahari further west and south), not any difference in what the geographic feature actually is.

Why this primer earns its place before any list of passes: almost every pass in this book is simply the low point where a river or a trade route has managed to cut through one of these seven ranges. Zoji La crosses the Zaskar-adjacent wall between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh; Rohtang crosses the Pir Panjal watershed between the Beas and Chenab systems; Nathu La and Jelep La cross the Dongkya Range (a Sikkim Himalaya spur) toward Tibet. Once you can place a pass on this seven-range mental map, you no longer need to memorise "which range is X in" as an isolated fact — you can reason it out from where the pass sits on your west-to-east walk.

A note on how the Himalaya is conventionally divided lengthwise, too. Besides the three-wall north-south division above, the Himalaya is also commonly sliced lengthwise into four longitudinal segments, and exam questions sometimes ask which segment a state's mountains fall into: the Punjab Himalaya (between the Indus and Sutlej rivers, covering Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh), the Kumaon Himalaya (between the Sutlej and Kali rivers, covering Uttarakhand), the Nepal Himalaya (between the Kali and Tista rivers, mostly outside India but including the Kangchenjunga massif at its eastern edge), and the Assam Himalaya (between the Tista and Brahmaputra, covering Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh). This lengthwise scheme is a genuinely different classification from the Himadri-Himachal-Shivalik scheme — the first slices the range along its length by river, the second slices it across its width by age and elevation — and confusing the two is a common exam trap. A single mountain, say in Uttarakhand, is simultaneously "Kumaon Himalaya" (lengthwise segment) and, within that, has its own Himadri-Himachal-Shivalik bands (crosswise divisions).

How these ranges came to be, in brief. The entire system is the product of the Indian Plate's collision with the Eurasian Plate, a process that began roughly 50 million years ago when the northward-drifting Indian landmass — then an island continent that had separated from the ancient supercontinent Gondwana — first made contact with Asia. Unlike an oceanic-continental subduction, where one plate is consumed beneath the other, this was a continental-continental collision: neither plate could easily sink beneath the other, so the crust between them crumpled, thickened, and folded upward instead, building the Himalaya in a series of pulses rather than one event. The Himadri, being the oldest folded material, rose first; the Himachal and then the Shivalik ranges were thrown up in later, progressively younger pulses as the collision continued — which is exactly why elevation and rock age both decrease together as you move from the Himadri south to the Shivaliks. Crucially, this collision has never stopped: GPS geodetic measurements show the Indian Plate still advancing into Asia at a few centimetres a year, meaning the Himalaya is still actively rising (by a few millimetres a year in places) even as erosion wears it down — and this ongoing tectonic stress is also why the whole belt, passes and peaks alike, sits in a zone of significant earthquake hazard.
