The Middle East: The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea, bordered by Israel, the West Bank, and Jordan, sits at the lowest point on Earth's land surface — its shoreline is roughly 430 metres below sea level and dropping further each year as its level continues to fall. Its salinity is extreme, commonly cited at around 34% (roughly 9–10 times saltier than the open ocean), dense enough that a swimmer floats on the surface without effort, a widely photographed and widely tested fact. It formed within the Jordan Rift Valley, part of the same larger tectonic rift system (the Dead Sea Transform) that connects to the East African Rift further south — making it, geologically, a distant cousin of Africa's rift lakes above. It receives water mainly from the Jordan River but has no outlet; as with the Caspian, Aral, and Sambhar, evaporation alone removes water while leaving salt behind, which is precisely why it is so extraordinarily saline. The Dead Sea's level has fallen dramatically over recent decades — over a metre a year in recent measurements — because upstream damming and diversion of the Jordan River for agriculture and drinking water has sharply cut the inflow that used to balance evaporation; this makes it, like the Aral Sea, a frequently cited case of a shrinking saline lake, though the specific cause (upstream river diversion vs. Aral's irrigation diversion) is worth keeping distinct in your answer.

The Dead Sea's extreme salinity has a further consequence worth remembering: at such high mineral concentrations, ordinary freshwater and marine life cannot survive in it at all — hence the name "Dead" Sea — though the surrounding shoreline has long supported a wellness and mineral-extraction industry (potash and bromine extraction from its waters is economically significant to both Israel and Jordan), and its mineral-rich mud and water are marketed internationally for cosmetic and therapeutic use. A proposed Red Sea–Dead Sea Water Conveyance project, discussed at various points by Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority, would pipe seawater from the Red Sea to help replenish the Dead Sea's shrinking volume (while also generating hydropower and desalinated drinking water along the pipeline's descent, since the Dead Sea sits so far below sea level) — the proposal remains only partially implemented and periodically resurfaces in regional-cooperation current-affairs coverage, worth knowing as a live but unresolved policy discussion rather than a completed project.
