Europe and Canada's Quiet Giants

Not every "largest" lake gets the same fame as the Great Lakes or the Caspian — a handful of large lakes in Europe and Canada are frequently tested precisely because they are less famous, making them good trap-answer material.

Lake Ladoga, in northwestern Russia near St. Petersburg, is Europe's largest lake by surface area (~17,700 km²), formed by glacial action, and historically significant as the "Road of Life" ice route used to supply besieged Leningrad during World War II after the city's land routes were cut off.

Lake Onega, also in northwestern Russia, is Europe's second-largest lake, connected to Ladoga via the Svir River — the two are frequently paired in questions as Europe's largest and second-largest, in that order.

Great Bear Lake and Great Slave Lake, both in Canada's Northwest Territories, are, respectively, the largest lake entirely within Canada (Great Bear) and Canada's deepest lake (Great Slave, reaching over 600 m in its deepest basin) — both are glacially formed and sit largely within the Arctic/subarctic zone, frozen for much of the year.

Both Great Bear and Great Slave Lakes drain, eventually, into the Mackenzie River — Canada's longest river system — and both remain frozen for roughly seven to eight months of the year, a detail that regularly resurfaces in questions distinguishing Canada's subarctic lake regime from the more temperate Great Lakes further south. Neither lake supports large permanent settlements on the scale of the cities ringing the Great Lakes, reflecting the much harsher climate and far lower population density of Canada's Northwest Territories compared to the industrialised Great Lakes basin shared with the United States.
