Why This Chapter Matters

Physical divisions form the backbone of Indian geography questions in SSC and RRB papers. Almost every year, CGL, CHSL, MTS, and NTPC papers carry two to four direct questions from this single chapter, often on Himalayan ranges, passes, or plateau names. Once you know the five divisions cold, half of the river and climate chapters ahead will make sense on their own, because every river, every monsoon wind, every soil belt sits inside one of these five physical units.

Here is the shape of what's coming: the towering young Himalayas in the north, the flat Northern Plains they built, the ancient Peninsular Plateau in the south, the Coastal Plains hugging both shores, and the Island groups out at sea. The single biggest mistake aspirants make is treating the Himalayas as one uniform wall. They are not. The Himalayas run in three parallel ranges, and exam-setters love asking which range a specific peak, glacier, or hill station belongs to. Get that layering straight in this chapter, and you will stop losing marks to it for the rest of your preparation.

1. The Himalayan Mountains

The Himalayas are young fold mountains, formed by the collision of the Indian Plate with the Eurasian Plate roughly 5 crore years ago. India was once a separate island, drifting north across an ocean called Tethys. When it rammed into Asia, the sediments of that ocean floor crumpled upward, the way a rug bunches up when you push it against a wall. That collision has never really stopped. The Indian Plate still pushes north a few centimetres every year, which is why the Himalayas are still rising and why this belt sees frequent earthquakes.

Think of the Himalayas as a filled sandwich stretching almost 2,500 km from Jammu & Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh. It runs in four roughly parallel bands, each formed at a different stage of the same collision, each with its own average height and character.

Exam trap: Students often use "Himalayas" as if it means one single range. Every layer below has a distinct name, distinct average height, and distinct rock type. SSC questions frequently ask you to match a peak or feature to its correct range.

1.1 Trans-Himalayas

This is the northernmost and driest belt, lying beyond the Great Himalayas, mostly in Ladakh and parts of Tibet. It includes the Karakoram Range (home to K2, the second-highest peak in the world and the highest point in India), the Zaskar Range, and the Ladakh Range. This zone is a cold desert, because the Great Himalayas block the monsoon clouds from reaching it, the same way a tall building blocks sunlight from the street behind it.

1.2 The Great Himalayas (Himadri)

The Great Himalayas, also called Himadri, form the highest and most continuous range, with an average elevation above 6,000 metres. This range holds the world's tallest peaks: Everest in Nepal, Kanchenjunga in Sikkim (India's highest peak and the world's third highest), and Nanga Parbat and Nanda Devi further west. Permanent snow covers this range year-round, feeding the glaciers that give birth to India's great rivers. The Gangotri glacier, source of the Ganga, sits in this belt.

1.3 The Middle Himalayas (Himachal)

South of the Great Himalayas, at an average height of 3,700 to 4,500 metres, lies the Middle Himalayas, also called the Lesser Himalayas or Himachal. This is where most of India's famous hill stations sit: Shimla, Mussoorie, Nainital, Darjeeling. The Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges belong here. Because this belt is lower and gentler than the Great Himalayas, it gets enough rain and moderate cold to support the tea gardens and orchards you associate with the hills.

1.4 The Shiwaliks (Outer Himalayas)

The outermost and youngest range, the Shiwaliks run at a modest 900 to 1,100 metres and are made of loose sediment, sand, and gravel washed down from the higher ranges by rivers over millions of years. That is why they erode so easily and why flat-bottomed valleys called Duns form between the Shiwaliks and the Middle Himalayas. Dehradun, sitting in the Dun valley that carries its name, is the best-known example. The Shiwaliks are lower and softer than the ranges above them, structurally the "youngest sibling" of the family, still forming from debris even as the older ranges keep growing.

Memory hook: Remember the four Himalayan layers north to south as "Trans Rides Great Horses, Middle Waits, Shiwaliks Follow" — Trans-Himalaya, Great Himalaya, Middle Himalaya, Shiwaliks. Each word starts with the range's key letter, in the correct north-to-south order.

The Himalayas are also commonly divided lengthwise, from west to east, into four regional segments that exam papers occasionally name directly: the Punjab Himalayas (between the Indus and Satluj rivers), the Kumaon Himalayas (between the Satluj and Kali rivers, covering Uttarakhand), the Nepal Himalayas (between the Kali and Teesta rivers, holding Everest and Kanchenjunga), and the Assam Himalayas (between the Teesta and Brahmaputra, running through Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh). You do not need to memorise every river boundary here, but knowing that the range changes character and name as it runs east will help you place a hill station or peak correctly the moment a question names a state instead of a range.

1.5 Important Himalayan Passes

A pass is a natural gap in a mountain range that allows crossing to the other side, functionally a mountain's own doorway. These are high-yield for exams because each pass connects two specific places, and questions often test that exact link.

Exam trap: Nathu La and Jelep La are both in Sikkim and both lead to Tibet, and papers love pairing them as a "which one is which" trap. Nathu La is the one that reopened for border trade in 2006 and is the more frequently tested of the two.

2. The Northern Plains

South of the Shiwaliks lies one of the most fertile stretches of land on Earth, the Northern Plains, built entirely from alluvial soil carried down by the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra river systems over thousands of years. Picture a river as a delivery truck that has been dropping silt at the same spot for centuries; the plains are the pile that truck has built up.

The Northern Plains stretch roughly 2,400 km from Punjab to Assam and are usually divided into three sub-regions:

  • Bhabar: A narrow belt just south of the Shiwaliks where rivers, still carrying heavy pebbles and boulders from the hills, deposit this coarse material and often disappear underground. You will not find much farming or dense settlement here.
  • Terai: South of the Bhabar, where the underground rivers resurface, creating a marshy, forested belt. Historically malaria-prone, now largely cleared and cultivated in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
  • Bhangar and Khadar: The main plains proper. Bhangar is the older alluvium, slightly elevated and containing calcareous nodules called kankar. Khadar is the newer, more fertile alluvium found in river floodplains, renewed almost every year by fresh flooding, which is exactly why Khadar tracts along the Ganga are among India's most productive farmland.

The Northern Plains support roughly 40 percent of India's population on a fraction of its land, because flat land, fertile soil, and year-round river water make it the natural heartland for agriculture and, historically, for empires.

Geographers usually split the Northern Plains, west to east, into three regional sections as well: the Punjab Plain, drained by the Indus tributaries (Satluj, Beas, Ravi, Chenab, Jhelum) and known for its wheat belt; the Ganga Plain, the largest of the three, stretching from Delhi through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and into West Bengal; and the Brahmaputra Plain, confined mostly to Assam, narrower than the other two and famous for its shifting river channel and frequent floods. If you picture the Northern Plains as a long, shallow trough running west to east, these three sections are simply the stretch of that trough each river system has filled with its own silt.

Exam trap: Do not confuse the Northern Plains, which are recent alluvial deposits still forming today, with the Peninsular Plateau next door, which is one of the oldest and most stable landforms on the planet. Papers sometimes ask you to identify which of two features is "geologically older," and the plains-versus-plateau contrast is exactly the kind of pairing they use.

3. The Peninsular Plateau

South of the Northern Plains lies the Peninsular Plateau, the oldest and most stable landmass in India, a leftover fragment of the ancient supercontinent Gondwanaland. Unlike the young, still-rising Himalayas, this plateau is made of hard, ancient crystalline and igneous rock that has been worn down by erosion for hundreds of millions of years. If the Himalayas are a newly built house, the Peninsular Plateau is the old family haveli, weathered smooth by generations of monsoons, still standing on rock-solid foundations.

The plateau is triangular and is broadly split by the Vindhya and Satpura ranges into two halves: the Central Highlands to the north and the Deccan Plateau to the south.

3.1 Central Highlands

Lying between the Northern Plains and the Deccan Plateau, the Central Highlands include the Malwa Plateau in Madhya Pradesh, drained mainly by the Chambal and Betwa rivers, and the Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand plateaus further east. The Chhotanagpur Plateau, spread across Jharkhand and touching Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal, is part of this eastern extension and is India's richest mineral storehouse, holding major reserves of coal, iron ore, and mica.

3.2 The Deccan Plateau

South of the Narmada river lies the Deccan Plateau, a vast lava plateau formed by volcanic eruptions roughly 6.5 crore years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period. Molten lava spread across a huge area and cooled in layers, creating the distinctive black soil (regur) you will study in the soils chapter. The Deccan tilts from west to east, which is exactly why most peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Mahanadi) flow eastward into the Bay of Bengal rather than the nearby Arabian Sea.

Two mountain ranges frame the Deccan on either side: the Western Ghats (Sahyadri), running almost unbroken along the west coast with an average height greater than the Eastern Ghats, and the Eastern Ghats, a discontinuous, eroded range along the east coast, broken up by the very rivers that cross it on their way to the sea.

Exam trap: The Western Ghats are continuous and higher; the Eastern Ghats are broken and lower. This single pair, confused constantly, is one of the most repeated questions in this whole chapter.

4. The Coastal Plains

Between the Peninsular Plateau and the sea run two narrow strips of coastal land, shaped very differently because of the ranges behind them.

4.1 Western Coastal Plains

Running from Gujarat to Kerala along the Arabian Sea, the Western Coastal Plains are narrow, because the Western Ghats rise steeply close to the shoreline, leaving little flat land in between. This coast has excellent natural harbours (Mumbai, Kochi, Mangalore) because the sea here is deep close to the shore. The plain is broken into the Konkan coast (Maharashtra-Goa), Karnataka coast, and Malabar coast (Kerala), and it is famous for backwaters, lagoon-like stretches of calm water separated from the sea by narrow strips of land, most iconic in Kerala.

4.2 Eastern Coastal Plains

Running from West Bengal to Tamil Nadu along the Bay of Bengal, the Eastern Coastal Plains are wider than the west coast, because the Eastern Ghats sit farther inland and rivers here build broad, fertile deltas as they slow down and spread out before reaching the sea. This coast is split into the Northern Circars (Odisha-Andhra Pradesh) and the Coromandel Coast (further south into Tamil Nadu). Because the coast is shallow and gently sloping, there are fewer natural harbours than the west, though major deltas like those of the Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri make this belt India's rice bowl of the south.

Memory hook: The east coast is wide with deltas, the west coast is narrow with harbours. Think of the west coast as a crowded train platform — the mountains push right up to the edge, everything is tight and steep, but you can dock a train (a ship) right there. The east coast is an open field — spread out, flat, plenty of room for rivers to fan out into deltas, but you cannot dock a train (a large ship) just anywhere.

5. The Islands of India

India's island territories fall into two separate groups, in two different seas, formed in two completely different ways. This is another pairing exam-setters test relentlessly, because the two names sound similar in category but have almost nothing else in common.

5.1 Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Located in the Bay of Bengal, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are the peaks of a submerged mountain range, an extension of the Arakan Yoma range in Myanmar rising above sea level. They are volcanic and hilly in origin, home to Barren Island, India's only active volcano. The group is separated internally by the Ten Degree Channel, which splits the Andaman group from the Nicobar group. Port Blair, officially renamed Sri Vijaya Puram, is the capital and union territory headquarters.

5.2 Lakshadweep Islands

Located in the Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast, the Lakshadweep group is coral in origin, built from coral reefs and atolls growing on a submerged plateau rather than any volcanic peak. This is India's smallest union territory by area, with Kavaratti as its capital. Because coral needs warm, shallow, clear water to grow, these islands are all low-lying and flat, nothing like the hilly Andamans.

Exam trap: Andaman-Nicobar is volcanic/hilly and lies in the Bay of Bengal; Lakshadweep is coral/flat and lies in the Arabian Sea. A question that swaps these two origins is one of the oldest tricks in the SSC playbook.

6. Why This Grouping Matters for the Chapters Ahead

Every physical division you've just learned decides what happens next in Indian geography. The Himalayas trap monsoon clouds and give birth to perennial, snow-fed rivers. The Northern Plains, built by those same rivers, become the alluvial soil belt and the country's agricultural heartland. The Peninsular Plateau, being old and rain-dependent rather than snow-fed, produces seasonal rivers and the black soil you'll study in the soils chapter. The Coastal Plains decide where India's ports and deltas sit. None of this is random trivia; it's cause and effect, and remembering the "why" behind each fact is what will let you answer questions you have never seen phrased exactly this way before.
