Why This Chapter Matters
Minerals and mining questions show up in almost every SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS and RRB NTPC paper, usually 2 to 4 marks, and they are some of the easiest marks in the whole geography syllabus once you fix the state-mineral pairs in your head. Examiners love this topic because it rewards precise memory rather than reasoning, which means a well-prepared aspirant beats a "generally aware" one every single time.
The single biggest mistake aspirants make here is mixing up Odisha and Jharkhand for iron ore and coal leadership, or confusing bauxite (aluminium ore) with hematite (iron ore) because both sound like generic rock names to someone cramming the night before. You will also see students confidently answer "Chhattisgarh" for bauxite when the real leader is Odisha. This chapter fixes those confusions permanently with clear belts, not just lists.
Think of India's mineral map like a thali. Each mineral has its own bowl, sitting in a fixed spot on the plate, and once you know the plate's layout, you can find any bowl with your eyes closed. The plate itself is the Peninsular Plateau, the oldest and most stable landmass in India, sitting on Precambrian rock that has had billions of years to concentrate metallic ores. The younger Himalayas and the alluvial Northern Plains are geologically too young and too soft for large-scale metallic mineral deposits. That single fact, old rock hoards metal and young rock does not, answers half the "which region" questions before you even memorise a state name.
How to Read a Mineral Question
Before the state-by-state detail, understand how SSC and RRB frame mineral questions, because that shapes what you should actually memorise. Roughly four question types repeat year after year: "which state leads in producing X," "which mine/belt is famous for X," "which ore/type is used for Y purpose," and "match the mineral to its correct region." Notice that none of these ask you to explain geology in depth. You are being tested on a fixed set of pairs: mineral, state, mine name, and occasionally the specific ore variety. Treat this chapter as a set of pairs to lock in, not a geology lecture to understand line by line. That said, understanding the "why" behind each pairing makes the pairs stick far longer than rote listing does, which is the whole point of the belt-based approach below.
The Chhotanagpur Plateau — India's Mineral Heartland
If you remember one belt from this chapter, make it this one. The Chhotanagpur Plateau, spread across Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh, holds India's richest concentration of coal, iron ore, mica and copper in one contiguous stretch. Exam-setters treat this belt as a single unit because the ore-bearing rock system, called the Dharwar and Gondwana systems, runs continuously under all four states.
Exam trap: Do not confuse Chhotanagpur Plateau (mineral-rich, eastern) with the Deccan Plateau (basalt-rich, better known for black soil and cotton). They are different plateaus with different mineral profiles, and SSC has asked both in the same paper to trip up rushed readers.
Iron Ore
Iron ore is India's best-known metallic mineral, and India ranks among the world's top producers and exporters, mainly of high-grade hematite. Two ores matter for the exam.
- Hematite — 60–70% iron content, red in colour, India's primary commercial ore.
- Magnetite — up to 72% iron content, the purest natural iron ore, but found in smaller quantities in India than hematite.
Odisha is the top iron-ore producing state in India today, with Chhattisgarh close behind, followed by Karnataka and then Jharkhand. Goa also contributes meaningfully, in smaller volume.

Memory hook: For the top iron ore states, remember "O-C-K" as in "Odisha Calls Karnataka" gets you Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka in order, with Jharkhand fourth. This is the ranking order (by current output share) that exam sources cite most consistently. Say it like a train announcement: Odisha first, Chhattisgarh next, Karnataka third.
Karnataka's iron belt around Bellary-Hospet and Chikkamagaluru grew rapidly through the 2000s and briefly overtook older belts in export volume, before a Supreme Court-ordered mining ban in 2011 (over illegal extraction) slowed it down sharply. The state has since resumed regulated mining, but the episode is a useful real-world reminder that mineral output is not fixed forever, it depends on regulation, environmental limits and market demand as much as on what lies underground. Goa's iron ore, smaller in volume, historically moved out through Mormugao port rather than by rail, since much of the state's mining sits close to the coast.
Bailadila in Chhattisgarh deserves a special mention. Its ore is so pure that much of it is exported through Vishakhapatnam port, connected by a dedicated slurry pipeline, one of the longest of its kind in Asia. If you have ever seen a long freight train loaded with red-brown ore chugging out of central India toward the coast, that is very likely Bailadila iron on its way to a ship.
Coal
Coal is India's most important fossil fuel and the backbone of thermal power generation, which still supplies most of the country's electricity. Indian coal comes in two geological ages that examiners test directly.
- Gondwana coal — around 200 million years old, accounts for roughly 98% of India's coal reserves, found in peninsular India (Damodar valley, Godavari valley, Mahanadi valley, Sone valley). This is the coal that actually powers Indian industry.
- Tertiary coal — much younger, around 15–60 million years old, found in smaller pockets in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Small quantity, but exam-relevant because it breaks the "coal only in peninsular India" assumption.
Jharkhand holds India's largest coal reserves, with the Jharia coalfield in the Damodar valley being the single most famous coalfield in the country, often called India's "coal capital." Odisha and Chhattisgarh follow closely, and together with Jharkhand and West Bengal, this Damodar valley belt supplies the bulk of India's coking and non-coking coal.

Exam trap: "Coking coal" (used to make steel, needs high carbon and low ash) is not the same as "non-coking coal" (used for thermal power). Jharia is famous for coking coal; Talcher and Korba are known more for thermal-grade non-coking coal. SSC sometimes asks which coalfield supplies steel plants directly. The answer is Jharia and Bokaro, not Talcher.
Think about why coal and iron ore so often sit close together in the same states. A steel plant needs both raw materials in huge quantities, and transporting heavy bulk minerals over long distances is expensive. So historically, India's biggest steel plants (Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Rourkela, Durgapur, Bhilai) were deliberately built near this coal-iron combination belt rather than near ports or big cities. If you have ever travelled by train through Jharkhand or Chhattisgarh and noticed the sky turn slightly hazy with plant smoke near a town you had not heard of before, you were likely passing one of these mineral-belt industrial towns. This location logic will come back in the next chapter on industries, so keep the pattern in mind: minerals decide where heavy industry sits, not the other way round.
Bauxite
Bauxite is the ore of aluminium, and this is where students most often lose easy marks by confusing it with iron ore. Bauxite forms from intense chemical weathering of aluminium-rich rock under hot, wet tropical conditions, which is exactly why it caps the plateaus and hill tops of eastern and central India rather than sitting underground like coal.
Odisha is India's leading bauxite producer by a wide margin, followed by Gujarat and Jharkhand. The Panchpatmali hills in Koraput district, Odisha, form the single largest bauxite deposit in the country.
Memory hook: Bauxite loves hills and hot rain, not deep mines. If a question describes ore found "capping plateau tops" or "in lateritic hill regions," it is describing bauxite, not iron ore or coal, which both come from deeper rock strata.
Exam trap: Students often answer "Chhattisgarh" when asked for the top bauxite state because Chhattisgarh does produce some bauxite (Amarkantak plateau). The correct top answer is Odisha. Lock in Odisha for both iron ore's close second place and bauxite's clear first place; that dual fact is a favourite SSC pairing question.
Mica
Mica is a unique mineral because India was traditionally the world's leading producer and exporter of high-quality sheet mica, prized for its insulating properties in the electrical industry. It splits into thin, transparent sheets, which is exactly why it was historically used for electrical insulation before synthetic substitutes took over much of that market.
Andhra Pradesh (the Nellore-Gudur belt) is India's leading mica producer by both reserves and output today, followed by Rajasthan (Ajmer, Bhilwara, in the Aravalli belt). Jharkhand (the Koderma-Gaya-Hazaribagh belt, often just called the Koderma belt) was traditionally India's best-known mica region and still matters for the exam, but its output share has fallen well behind Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan in recent decades.
Memory hook: Picture mica as thin glass "pages" you can peel off, like the pages of a very old book. The book's biggest surviving "library" today is Andhra Pradesh's Nellore-Gudur belt, even though Jharkhand's Koderma attic is the more famous old address.
Manganese
Manganese is essential for making steel alloys (it hardens steel and removes impurities during smelting), so wherever you find strong iron and steel production, manganese demand follows closely behind. Odisha leads manganese production in India, with Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra as other significant producers. The Nagpur-Bhandara belt in Maharashtra and the Balaghat belt in Madhya Pradesh are commonly named mining pockets.
Notice a pattern forming already: Odisha keeps winning the "top producer" title across iron ore, bauxite and manganese. This is not a coincidence you need to memorise separately for each mineral, it flows directly from Odisha's location on the mineral-rich Eastern Ghats and Chhotanagpur fringe. When an SSC question gives you an unfamiliar mineral and asks for the leading state, and Odisha is one of the options, it is statistically the safest first guess among metallic ores, though always check the specific mineral before committing, since copper and mica break this pattern.
Copper
Copper is India's chief non-ferrous metal weak spot: domestic reserves are modest compared to demand, so India imports a good share of its copper ore concentrate despite having some production. The Singhbhum belt in Jharkhand (around Mosabani and Ghatsila) is historically India's most important copper mining region, with Rajasthan (Khetri, Jhunjhunu) and Madhya Pradesh (Malanjkhand) also contributing.
Exam trap: Do not assume every metal is abundant in India simply because iron and bauxite are. Copper, unlike iron ore, is a mineral where India remains import-dependent. Examiners like to test this as a "which of the following is true/false" statement.
Petroleum & Natural Gas
Petroleum is not a metallic mineral, but SSC and RRB group it with "minerals" in the syllabus, so treat it as part of this chapter's core.
India's major producing regions:
- Bombay High (offshore, Arabian Sea, off the Mumbai coast) — India's single largest oil-producing field, discovered in the 1970s.
- Assam — India's oldest oil-producing region; Digboi, in Assam, is home to Asia's first oil well and one of the oldest continuously operating oil refineries in the world.
- Gujarat — Ankleshwar and Cambay basin fields.
- Krishna-Godavari basin (Andhra Pradesh/offshore) — a major natural gas hub in recent decades.
- Rajasthan — Barmer basin, a newer but significant onshore find.
Exam trap: "First oil well in India" and "largest oil-producing field in India" are two different facts with two different answers. Digboi (Assam) holds the "first" record; Bombay High holds the "largest" record. SSC has tested both in the same exam cycle to catch students who blur the two.
Think of Bombay High like a well-stocked warehouse just offshore from Mumbai's bustling docks. Production happens quietly out at sea, but the output feeds refineries you can see lining the Mumbai-Gujarat coast on any train ride along that route.
India still imports a large share of its crude oil requirement despite these domestic fields, simply because national demand has grown far faster than production. This is a useful fact to hold in your head as a general statement (India is a net oil importer), separate from the mine-and-field details above, because SSC sometimes tests the overall import-dependence fact as a standalone statement-based question rather than asking for a specific field name.
Other Notable Minerals
A few smaller-weightage minerals still show up in single-line MCQs.
- Limestone — raw material for cement, found widely in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh; explains why so many large cement plants cluster in these states.
- Gold — Kolar Gold Fields and Hutti mines in Karnataka are India's traditional gold belt, though production today is limited.
- Diamonds — Panna district in Madhya Pradesh is India's best-known diamond-mining area.
- Uranium — Jaduguda in Jharkhand's Singhbhum belt is India's principal uranium mining site, feeding the country's nuclear power programme.
- Gypsum — mainly from Rajasthan, used in cement and fertiliser industries.
- Chromite — mostly from Odisha's Sukinda valley, one of the world's largest chromite deposits, used to make stainless steel and ferro-alloys.
- Bentonite and Fuller's earth — clay minerals found in Rajasthan and Gujarat, used in drilling fluids and as industrial absorbents.
These smaller minerals rarely carry more than one mark in an exam, but SSC likes to slip one of them into an otherwise "easy" set of options to check whether you actually memorised the belt or just guessed based on the state's general reputation for mining. Do not spend disproportionate revision time on these minor entries; a single read-through the night before your exam is usually enough, since the marks they carry are rare compared with the core iron ore, coal and bauxite pairs.
National Mineral Policy — What You Need to Know
India's mineral sector is governed under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, with the National Mineral Policy periodically updated to guide exploration, sustainable mining and private/foreign investment (the most recent major revision was in 2019). For exam purposes, remember three things: the policy pushes for scientific and sustainable mining, encourages private investment through auction-based allocation of mining blocks (replacing the older discretionary allocation system), and aims to reduce India's import dependence on minerals like copper and certain rare earths. You do not need policy dates beyond this; SSC rarely tests fine print here, it tests the underlying objective, which is moving from discretionary allotment to transparent auctions.
Why the Eastern Belt Dominates
One pattern ties this whole chapter together, and once you see it, half your confusion disappears. Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and parts of Madhya Pradesh sit on the ancient, mineral-rich Chhotanagpur and Eastern Ghats plateau system. This is why the same five or six states keep reappearing as the answer across iron ore, coal, bauxite, mica, manganese and copper questions. If you are ever unsure of an answer and one of these states is an option, it is very often the safer choice over a Northern Plains or coastal southern state, simply because the geology favours them.
