Why This Chapter Matters
Rivers are the single most repeated topic in Indian geography papers. SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS, and RRB NTPC all pull 2-4 questions from river origins, tributaries, and dams in nearly every shift, and the Himalayan systems (Indus, Ganga, Brahmaputra) account for more than half of those questions because they carry the country's biggest, most "famous" rivers. Get this chapter solid and you have banked marks that show up year after year, exam after exam.
Here is the shape of what's coming. We will build each system the way it actually exists on the ground: start at the glacier, follow the main channel downstream, and pick up tributaries in the order they join. The single biggest mistake aspirants make with this topic is mixing up which tributary belongs to which river, especially when two tributaries share a similar-sounding name across different systems (Sutlej vs Son, Kosi vs Koshi-spelling confusion, Chenab vs Chambal). Examiners know this confusion exists and write questions specifically to trap it. You will beat that trap by learning tributaries as a fixed left-bank/right-bank sequence, not as a loose list.
1. The Indus River System
Origin and course
The Indus (called Sindhu in Indian tradition) rises near Bokhar Chu glacier close to Lake Mansarovar in Tibet, at an altitude of about 5,150 metres, not far from Mount Kailash. Think of Kailash-Mansarovar as a geographic roundabout: three great rivers of Asia (Indus, Brahmaputra, and Sutlej) all start their journeys from within roughly 100 km of this one spot, then head off in completely different directions, one west, one east, one south. That single image solves a surprising number of "which river originates near Mansarovar" questions in one shot.
The Indus flows northwest through Tibet, cuts into India through Ladakh, and carves a deep gorge between the Ladakh and Zaskar ranges. It then bends sharply southwest near Nanga Parbat and enters Pakistan, eventually draining into the Arabian Sea through a large delta in Sindh.
Total length: about 3,180 km, of which roughly 1,114 km lies in India (mainly Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir). This makes the Indus one of the longest rivers in Asia, even though most of its course lies outside India today, a fact examiners love testing because it feels counter-intuitive that "India's" river is mostly foreign territory now.
Tributaries
The Indus picks up tributaries from both banks before it becomes the river system Punjab (literally "land of five rivers") is named after.
Right bank (from the Ladakh/Karakoram side): Shyok, Gilgit, Kabul, Kurram, Gomal — these mostly join in present-day Pakistan/Afghanistan territory.
Left bank (the famous five of Punjab): Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej. These five rivers do not join the Indus one by one. They first merge with each other in the Punjab plains to form a single combined stream called the Panjnad ("five rivers"), and only the Panjnad then joins the main Indus near Mithankot in Pakistan.
Exam trap: Students often list Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab, Jhelum as tributaries "of the Indus" and stop there, but examiners specifically test the Panjnad step, the intermediate confluence, so remember the sequence: five rivers → Panjnad → Indus.
Memory hook: For the five eastern tributaries in their geographic order from east to west, use "Suna Bhai Roz Chai Jao" (Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab, Jhelum) — a made-up phrase meaning "Listen brother, go for tea daily," which fixes both the names and their west-to-east sequence across Punjab.
Of these five, the Sutlej is the longest and, like the Indus itself, also originates near Mansarovar (from Rakas Lake), cutting a deep gorge through the Himalayas before entering Himachal Pradesh. The Beas originates near the Rohtang Pass and is the only one of the five that flows entirely within India before joining the Sutlej. The Chenab is formed by the union of the Chandra and Bhaga streams in Himachal Pradesh (hence its old name Chandrabhaga), and it carries the largest volume of the five.
The Indus Waters Treaty, briefly
You will see this tested as a factual add-on, not deep policy. Under the Indus Waters Treaty (1960) between India and Pakistan, India got control over the three eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej), while Pakistan got the three western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab), with India retaining limited rights for irrigation, power generation, and navigation on the western rivers. Remember it as "east stays home, west goes across."
Dams and barrages on the Indus system
Within India, the Indus system is heavily harnessed for irrigation and hydropower because it is the lifeline of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Ladakh.

Exam trap: Bhakra Nangal is asked constantly and students confuse it with rivers other than the Sutlej. Fix it firmly: Bhakra Nangal is on the Sutlej, nowhere else.
2. The Ganga River System
Origin and course
The Ganga's true source is the Gangotri Glacier in Uttarakhand, from which the Bhagirathi emerges at a spot called Gaumukh ("cow's mouth," because of the glacier snout's shape). The Bhagirathi flows down to Devprayag, where it meets the Alaknanda (which itself begins near the Satopanth and Bhagirath Kharak glaciers). At Devprayag, the combined stream officially takes the name Ganga for the first time.
Picture Devprayag like a railway junction where two separate lines merge into one main line and only then get a single "through" train name. Before Devprayag, you are technically riding the Bhagirathi or the Alaknanda; after it, everyone is riding the Ganga.
The river then flows onto the plains at Haridwar, moves southeast across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand's edge, into West Bengal, and splits into distributaries before entering the Bay of Bengal. The main distributary flowing into India, the Bhagirathi-Hooghly, passes Kolkata; the larger volume continues as the Padma into Bangladesh, where it eventually merges with the Brahmaputra (locally called the Jamuna there) and finally the Meghna before reaching the sea.
Total length: about 2,525 km, making the Ganga the longest river flowing entirely, or almost entirely, within the Indian subcontinent and the river with by far the largest river basin in India (over 26% of India's total geographical area). If a question asks for India's largest river basin, the answer is always Ganga, not Indus and not Brahmaputra, even though the Brahmaputra carries more water per second in places.
Tributaries
The Ganga collects a long list of tributaries, and the SSC/RRB pattern strongly prefers testing them by bank.
Right bank (from the peninsular plateau, generally shorter, seasonal): Yamuna, Son, Punpun, Damodar, Tamsa (Tons).
Left bank (from the Himalayas, longer, perennial, snow-fed): Ramganga, Gomti, Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi, Mahananda.
Memory hook: Left-bank Himalayan tributaries, from west to east: "Rohit Goes Gharelu Ghar Khaane" (Ramganga, Gomti, Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi) — "Rohit goes home to eat home food," fixing both the names and their west-to-east order as they join the Ganga.
The Yamuna deserves special attention because it is asked as a standalone topic almost as often as the Ganga. It originates at Yamunotri (Champasar glacier, Uttarakhand), flows past Delhi and Agra, and finally merges with the Ganga at Prayagraj (Allahabad), the site of the Sangam, traditionally described as the meeting of three rivers (Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical/invisible Saraswati). The Yamuna is itself the Ganga's largest tributary by length.
The Kosi is nicknamed the "Sorrow of Bihar" because its channel shifts dramatically across the flat Bihar plains almost every flood season, causing repeated, unpredictable flooding; this is a classic one-line fact question. The Son, by contrast, is a right-bank tributary rising in the Amarkantak plateau (Madhya Pradesh), the same general upland that also gives birth to the Narmada, one river feeding the Ganga system and the other flowing independently to the Arabian Sea, a neat contrast worth remembering as a pair.
Exam trap: Students frequently place the Son on the left bank because it "sounds" Himalayan. It is not. The Son is a right-bank, peninsular tributary. Keep the rule simple: anything rising south of the Ganga plain (from the plateau) joins from the right; anything rising in the Himalayas joins from the left.
Basin states
The Ganga basin spans Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, with smaller catchment portions touching Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi. That ten-plus state footprint is exactly why the Ganga basin is India's largest by area and why so many of India's most densely populated cities (Delhi, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Patna, Kolkata) sit on it or its tributaries. If you have ever taken a train from Delhi to Kolkata, you have effectively ridden the length of the Ganga plain the entire way; that lived experience is a better memory anchor than any map.

Farakka Barrage is the most frequently tested entry here: it was built to divert Ganga water into the Hooghly to flush silt out of Kolkata port, and it sits in West Bengal, close to the Bangladesh border, a fact that also connects to India-Bangladesh water-sharing questions in later chapters.
3. The Brahmaputra River System
Origin and course
The Brahmaputra is the odd one out among India's great rivers in one specific way: it is the only major Indian river with a masculine name (it means "son of Brahma"), because every other major river in Indian tradition is treated as a goddess.
It originates in Tibet near the Angsi Glacier, close to the Mansarovar-Kailash region we discussed for the Indus, and flows eastward across the Tibetan plateau for over a thousand kilometres under the name Yarlung Tsangpo, running parallel to the Himalayan range on its northern side. This is worth sitting with for a second: for most of its early life, the Brahmaputra is flowing in almost the opposite direction from where it eventually ends up in India, east instead of south, which is exactly why examiners like asking about its unusual course.
Near the eastern edge of the Himalayas, the river takes a dramatic hairpin bend around Namcha Barwa peak, cuts through a deep gorge, and enters India in Arunachal Pradesh, where it is known as the Siang (or Dihang). In Assam, it is joined by two major tributaries, the Dibang and the Lohit, near Sadiya, and only after this triple confluence does the river take the name Brahmaputra.
The Brahmaputra then flows through the entire length of the Assam valley, generally west to south-west, before entering Bangladesh, where it is called the Jamuna (not to be confused with India's Yamuna, a completely different river and a classic name-trap question). In Bangladesh it eventually merges with the Padma (the Bangladesh continuation of the Ganga) and then the Meghna, before draining into the Bay of Bengal.
Total length: about 2,900 km, of which roughly 916 km lies within India (mostly Assam). Despite being shorter overall than the Ganga, the Brahmaputra carries a very high water volume and sediment load because of the extremely heavy rainfall in its Assam and eastern Himalayan catchment.
Exam trap: Three different names for one river across three countries confuses students badly: Yarlung Tsangpo (Tibet) → Siang/Dihang (Arunachal Pradesh) → Brahmaputra (Assam) → Jamuna (Bangladesh). Learn this chain as a single sentence, not four disconnected facts.
Drainage pattern and Majuli
Unlike the Ganga's relatively single, well-defined channel through most of the plains, the Brahmaputra in Assam is famous for a braided drainage pattern, meaning it splits into multiple interweaving channels separated by shifting sandbars and islands, then rejoins, again and again along its course. Picture a single busy road splitting into several lanes around a traffic island and merging back repeatedly for a hundred kilometres; that is the braided Brahmaputra.
This braiding created Majuli, in Assam, the largest river island in the world, a genuinely high-yield one-liner for SSC/RRB. The same braided, silt-heavy channel is also why the Brahmaputra causes severe, recurring floods across Assam nearly every monsoon.
Tributaries and state-wise flow
Besides the Dibang and Lohit that give the river its name at Sadiya, the Brahmaputra receives several more tributaries as it crosses Assam, including the Subansiri, Manas, Kameng, Dhansiri, and Teesta (note: some Bangladesh-focused syllabi treat the Teesta as joining directly in Bangladesh rather than Assam; for Indian competitive exams, know it as a north-bank Brahmaputra tributary flowing through Sikkim and West Bengal before the border).
State-wise flow (India): the Brahmaputra system flows through Arunachal Pradesh (as Siang/Dihang, joined by Dibang and Lohit) and then Assam (as Brahmaputra proper), before leaving India into Bangladesh.
Dams on the Brahmaputra system
The Brahmaputra's main channel in Assam remains largely un-dammed because of its massive width and flood dynamics; most hydropower activity happens on its Arunachal Pradesh tributaries instead.

Exam trap: Students sometimes assume there must be a "Brahmaputra Dam" analogous to Bhakra Nangal or Tehri because it is such a famous river. There isn't one comparable in scale on the main channel; the testable dams sit on its Arunachal tributaries.
Comparing the three systems: the big picture
You will get more marks from being able to instantly place a fact into the right system than from memorising any single system perfectly. Use this simple rule: if the question mentions Ladakh, Punjab, or Kashmir, think Indus. If it mentions Uttarakhand, Bihar, or West Bengal without Assam, think Ganga. If it mentions Arunachal Pradesh or Assam, think Brahmaputra.
All three systems share one origin fact that is worth locking in permanently: the Indus, the Sutlej (an Indus tributary), and the Brahmaputra all begin within roughly a hundred kilometres of Mansarovar-Kailash in Tibet, yet they flow in three completely different directions, northwest, south, and east respectively, before reaching India from three different sides. No other single fact ties this whole chapter together as efficiently.
