Why This Chapter Matters
Climate and monsoon questions show up in almost every SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS and RRB NTPC paper, usually two to four marks, and they come back year after year because the topic is compact and testable: name a factor, name a wind, name a season. Static GK sections in banking exams lean on this chapter too, especially the El Nino and Koeppen classification bits. The single biggest mistake aspirants make is mixing up the two monsoon branches, the southwest monsoon that brings rain from the sea to the land in summer, and the northeast monsoon that brings rain only to Tamil Nadu's coast in winter. Examiners exploit this constantly, flipping the direction or the season in a question to catch you half-asleep. Get that direction fixed in your head first, and half this chapter's marks are already yours.
This chapter covers what actually decides India's weather, how the monsoon engine starts and stops, the four official seasons, how rainfall is spread unevenly across the map, the El Nino and La Nina effect on your monsoon, and a short look at the Koeppen classification system as applied to India. Nothing here is decorative. Every fact is something an exam has asked, or is structured close enough to something an exam has asked, that you should know it cold.
1. What Decides India's Climate
India is officially classified as having a monsoon type of climate, tropical monsoon in the south, subtropical in the north. That single label hides a lot of variation, from the Thar desert crossing 50°C in May to Cherrapunji and Mawsynram in Meghalaya drowning under some of the highest rainfall on Earth. Several factors pull in different directions to produce this range.
Latitude. The Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N) cuts India roughly in half, running through Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram. Land south of this line lies in the tropics and stays warm all year. Land north of it, especially the Himalayan belt, sees real winter cold.
Altitude. Temperature falls with height, roughly 0.6°C for every 100 metres of elevation, the standard lapse rate. This is why Shimla and Darjeeling stay pleasant while Delhi bakes at the same latitude band, and why snow sits permanently on Himalayan peaks even though India as a whole is a tropical country.
Distance from the sea. Coastal cities like Mumbai and Chennai have a moderate, equable climate, warm but without extreme swings, because the sea heats and cools slowly. Interior cities like Delhi and Nagpur show a much bigger gap between summer highs and winter lows, because land heats and cools fast. This is called continentality.
The Himalayas. Think of the Himalayan wall as a giant bouncer standing at the north gate of India. It blocks the freezing Siberian winds from central Asia in winter, so north India stays warmer than other places at the same latitude, like parts of China or the USA. In summer, the same wall blocks the monsoon winds from escaping north, forcing them to dump their rain over India instead of drifting away. No Himalayas, no Indian monsoon as we know it. That is worth remembering as a standalone fact, examiners like to test it directly.
Pressure and wind systems. Two pressure systems drive the seasonal rain machine: a low-pressure cell that develops over northwest India and Pakistan in summer (heat pulls air pressure down), and a high-pressure cell that develops over the same region in winter (cold air is dense and sinks). Wind always flows from high pressure to low pressure, so the direction of the monsoon literally flips with the seasons.
Jet streams. The subtropical westerly jet stream blows over north India in winter, steering the western disturbances that bring winter rain to Punjab and Haryana. In summer, this jet stream shifts north of the Himalayas, and the tropical easterly jet stream takes over above peninsular India, a shift that is considered one of the triggers for the monsoon's sudden "burst."
Exam trap: students often write that India's climate is "purely tropical." It is not. The classification is monsoon type, a mixed category with tropical and subtropical zones combined, precisely because of the Himalayan barrier and the latitude spread. Answer "monsoon type," not "tropical," when a question asks for India's overall climate classification.
2. The Monsoon Mechanism — How It Actually Works
The word "monsoon" comes from the Arabic mausim, meaning season, borrowed by Arab sailors who noticed that Indian Ocean winds reverse direction with the seasons. That reversal is the whole story.
Picture a railway platform at noon in May. The platform's metal roof and concrete get scorching hot fast, while the water tank standing nearby stays comparatively cool. Land heats up faster than water because land has a lower specific heat capacity. By early June, the Indian landmass, especially the northwest plains, has become far hotter than the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal beside it. Hot air over land rises, leaving a low-pressure pocket behind. Cooler, moisture-loaded air from the ocean rushes in to fill that gap, exactly like people rushing onto an empty platform. That inrushing sea air, carrying huge amounts of water vapour, is the southwest monsoon.
Memory hook: call it the "hot plate, cool tank" picture. Hot plate (land) pulls in air from the cool tank (sea). Whichever side is hotter loses pressure and pulls wind toward itself. Once you can see this, you never confuse which way the wind should be blowing in which season.
The Southwest Monsoon (June to September)
This branch supplies roughly 75 to 80 percent of India's annual rainfall and is why farmers, planners, and the entire Indian economy watch its arrival date so closely. It splits into two branches as it crosses the coastline.
The Arabian Sea branch is the stronger of the two. It typically hits the Kerala coast around 1 June, officially called the monsoon's "onset." Wind then divides again: one part climbs the Western Ghats, dropping heavy orographic rain on the western coastal strip (Kerala, Karnataka's coast, Goa, Maharashtra's Konkan coast) while the Deccan plateau just behind the Ghats stays comparatively dry, a classic rain-shadow effect. Another part of the Arabian Sea branch swings north over Gujarat and Rajasthan, and a further stream heads up into the Ganga plains.
The Bay of Bengal branch picks up moisture from the Bay, strikes the coast of Odisha, West Bengal and the northeastern hills, and is forced upward sharply by the funnel-shaped terrain near the Khasi hills. This is exactly why Mawsynram and Cherrapunji, both perched on that funnel in Meghalaya, record the highest average rainfall anywhere in the country, and among the highest in the world. From there this branch curves west along the Himalayan foothills and meets the Arabian Sea branch somewhere over the northern plains, roughly Punjab and Haryana, by mid-July, completing the monsoon's coverage of almost the whole country.
Exam trap: questions often ask which branch reaches which state first. Kerala always associates with the Arabian Sea branch's onset date (around 1 June). Assam and West Bengal associate with the Bay of Bengal branch, which typically arrives a little earlier there because the Bay branch has a shorter sea crossing before hitting the Sundarbans and northeastern coast.
Within the southwest monsoon season there is a short but well-tested phenomenon called monsoon break or a "break monsoon," a spell of a week or two with little or no rain even during the wet months, caused by a shift in the monsoon trough. Do not confuse this with monsoon withdrawal, which happens at season's end, not mid-season.
The Northeast Monsoon (October to December)
Once summer heating fades, the process reverses. By October, north India cools faster than the surrounding seas, so a high-pressure zone builds over the northwest plains, and wind now flows outward from land to sea, the opposite of June. This dry, cool wind heading southeast across the country is called the northeast monsoon or the retreating monsoon.
Over most of India this wind is dry, since it originates over land. But by the time it crosses the Bay of Bengal on its way to the far south, it picks up moisture, and this is what brings the winter rains to Tamil Nadu, southern Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Kerala and Karnataka. This is why Tamil Nadu is the one Indian state that receives its main rainy season in winter, not summer, a fact that trips up students expecting all Indian rain to fall between June and September.
Exam trap: "monsoon" in most questions defaults to the southwest monsoon unless the question explicitly says "northeast" or "retreating." If a question says a state gets its principal rainfall in October-December, the answer is almost always Tamil Nadu.
3. The Four Seasons of India
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recognises four broad seasons, and this table-friendly structure is a favourite for direct MCQs.
Winter (December to February). North India sees its coldest spell, driven by cold, dry air from central Asia, while the peninsula stays mild since the sea moderates its temperature. This season also brings western disturbances, low-pressure systems that originate over the Mediterranean Sea and travel eastward on the winter jet stream, bringing light rain and snow to Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and western Uttar Pradesh. This winter rain is critical for the rabi crop cycle, wheat especially depends on it.
Summer / Pre-monsoon (March to May). Temperatures climb sharply across the plains, with places like Rajasthan's Churu and parts of Vidarbha regularly crossing 45-48°C. Two regional storm systems belong to this season and are commonly tested: Loo, the hot, dry, dust-laden wind that blows across the northern plains, especially dangerous in May-June and a genuine public health hazard, and Nor'westers (also called Kalbaisakhi in Bengal and Bordoisila in Assam), sudden violent thunderstorms that strike West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and Assam in the afternoon, useful for tea gardens and jute in Assam and Bengal despite the destruction they can cause.
Southwest Monsoon (June to September). Covered in detail above, this is India's principal rainy season.
Retreating Monsoon / Autumn (October to November). A transitional season, the southwest monsoon withdraws from the northwest first and last from the southeast, and the northeast monsoon takes over the far south. This season also has the highest frequency of tropical cyclones on India's east coast, since the Bay of Bengal is warmest and most humid at this time, feeding cyclone formation.
Exam trap: a question may ask when the monsoon "withdraws" versus "onsets" on the same coast. Onset over Kerala is around 1 June. Withdrawal from Rajasthan (the northwest, where it arrived last) typically begins around mid-September, and withdrawal completes from the entire country, including the far south, only by around mid-December. Withdrawal is a slow retreat, not a single date, unlike onset which is usually treated as one benchmark date per region.
4. Rainfall Distribution — Why the Map Looks So Uneven
Rainfall in India is famously lopsided, and this unevenness is itself a recurring exam theme. Broadly, four rainfall zones are recognised.
Very heavy rainfall areas (over 200 cm annually): the western coastal strip along the Western Ghats, the northeastern hill states including Meghalaya and Assam, and parts of West Bengal's sub-Himalayan belt. Mawsynram in Meghalaya is the classic textbook answer for India's (and among the world's) highest average annual rainfall location.
Heavy rainfall areas (100-200 cm): the eastern Peninsula, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, most of the Ganga plain in the east including Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, and parts of coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
Moderate rainfall areas (50-100 cm): much of the Deccan plateau's interior, southern Gujarat, and eastern Rajasthan.
Low/scanty rainfall areas (under 50 cm): western Rajasthan (the Thar), parts of Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat's Kutch region, and the leeward side of the Western Ghats known as the rain-shadow belt, covering interior Maharashtra and northern Karnataka.
Analogy: think of the Western Ghats as a cricket boundary rope with the fielders bunched right behind it. All the "catches," meaning all the rain, get taken right at the rope (the coast). Almost nothing reaches deep into the ground behind (the Deccan interior). That's why Mumbai on the coast gets drenched while Pune, barely 150 km inland but behind the Ghats, stays comparatively dry.
This unevenness matters for the exam beyond geography trivia, because it directly explains why irrigation is essential in low-rainfall zones (Punjab, western Rajasthan) even though those states are agriculturally vital, and why flood-prone river basins (Brahmaputra, Ganga in Bihar) sit in the very-heavy-rainfall zones. Chapter 15 on natural disasters builds directly on this rainfall map, so fix it well now.
5. El Nino and La Nina — The Ocean's Effect on Your Monsoon
This section is short but consistently tested, especially in banking and RRB static GK sections.
El Nino is a periodic warming of surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Peru. It disrupts the normal wind and pressure pattern across the tropical Pacific, and this disruption has a known ripple effect all the way to the Indian Ocean: El Nino years are statistically associated with weaker, delayed, or deficient southwest monsoons over India. 2015 and 2009 are commonly cited as El Nino-linked drought years in Indian exam material.
La Nina is the opposite phase, an abnormal cooling of the same Pacific waters, and it is generally associated with stronger, above-normal Indian monsoons.
Memory hook: El Nino means "the boy" in Spanish, named by Peruvian fishermen because it usually appeared around Christmas. Link "El Nino, warm ocean, weak monsoon" as one phrase, and "La Nina, cool ocean, strong monsoon" as its mirror. If you remember they are opposites of each other, you can derive the second from the first even under exam pressure.
Exam trap: El Nino and La Nina are Pacific Ocean phenomena, not Indian Ocean phenomena, even though their biggest headline effect for Indian readers is on the Indian monsoon. Do not answer "Indian Ocean" if a question asks where El Nino originates.
The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), sometimes called the "Indian Nino," is a separate, more recently studied phenomenon, a difference in sea surface temperature between the western and eastern Indian Ocean, which can sometimes offset or reinforce the Pacific effect. A positive IOD phase is generally considered favourable for the Indian monsoon. This is tested less often but has started appearing in recent-year current affairs-linked GK questions.
6. Koeppen Classification of Indian Climate — A Brief Look
The Koeppen classification, developed by climatologist Wladimir Koeppen, groups world climates by letter codes based on temperature and rainfall patterns. India, given its size, spans several Koeppen types, and this is occasionally tested at a basic identification level.

You do not need to memorise every code for most exams, but "Amw for the west coast" and "BWhw for the Thar desert" are the two most commonly asked, since they pair a familiar place with a specific classification letter.
7. Regional Rainfall Phenomena Worth Knowing by Name
A short list of named local weather events shows up repeatedly as one-word answers.
Mango showers: pre-monsoon light showers over Kerala and Karnataka in April-May, prized because they help mango crops ripen.
Blossom showers: pre-monsoon rain over Kerala and coastal Karnataka that helps coffee flowers bloom in the Western Ghats plantation belt. Students frequently confuse mango showers and blossom showers since both occur in the same season and region; the crop each one helps is the easiest way to keep them apart.
Nor'wester (Kalbaisakhi): already discussed above under summer season, repeated here because it belongs equally under "named local weather events."
Sumatras: squally thunderstorms that affect the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and adjoining coasts, named after their origin near Sumatra, Indonesia.
