Why This Chapter Matters

SSC and RRB exams pull 2 to 4 questions from this chapter almost every year, usually asking you to match a forest type to its region or to recall a forest-cover statistic from the latest India State of Forest Report. It looks like easy scoring territory, and it is, if you keep the categories straight. The single biggest mistake aspirants make here is mixing up tropical deciduous forest with tropical evergreen forest on the basis of rainfall alone, or worse, confusing forest cover with tree cover and forest area when a statistic question comes up. Get that distinction locked in early and half this chapter's marks are yours before you even reach the crop-like details of species and states.

Natural vegetation in India follows one simple logic: rainfall amount, temperature, and altitude decide what grows where. Once you see vegetation as a direct response to climate, the whole chapter stops being a list to memorise and starts being something you can reason out on exam day, the same way you'd guess that a place with heavy monsoon rain and hot weather will grow thick, tall trees.

1. What Decides Vegetation Type

Four factors control which forest grows where, and in order of importance:

  1. Rainfall — the single biggest factor. Areas with more than 200 cm annual rainfall support evergreen forest; areas with 70 to 200 cm support deciduous forest; areas below 70 cm support thorn and scrub.
  2. Temperature — decides whether growth is tropical, temperate, or alpine.
  3. Altitude — as you climb a mountain, temperature drops and vegetation changes, the same forest belt sequence repeating vertically that you'd see travelling from Kanyakumari to Kashmir horizontally.
  4. Soil type — mangroves need waterlogged deltaic soil; thorn forest tolerates poor, dry soil.

Two secondary factors also show up in trickier questions: relief (a mountain range on the windward side traps moisture, so the Western Ghats' western slope is far greener than its rain-shadowed eastern slope facing the Deccan) and duration of the dry season, which decides whether a deciduous forest sheds leaves briefly or for several months. None of these four or six factors act alone. A region's final vegetation is the outcome of all of them acting together, the way a dish's final taste depends on every ingredient in the pot, not just the strongest spice.

Exam trap: questions often describe a region's rainfall and ask you to name the forest type. Do not answer from memory of a state's name alone. Read the rainfall figure given in the question and match it to the bands above. A second common trap dresses up the same fact using "humid," "sub-humid," "semi-arid," and "arid" climate labels instead of rainfall numbers. Learn to translate: humid and sub-humid map to evergreen and moist deciduous, semi-arid maps to dry deciduous, and arid maps to thorn and scrub.

2. Tropical Evergreen (Rainforest)

Found where annual rainfall exceeds 200 cm and temperature stays above 24°C through the year. Trees here never shed all their leaves together, so the canopy stays green year-round, hence "evergreen."

Where: Western Ghats' windward side (Kerala, Karnataka, parts of Maharashtra), upper Assam and the northeastern hill states, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Character: Extremely dense, multi-layered canopy reaching 60 metres or more, so thick that sunlight barely touches the ground. Trees are hard to tell apart because they grow so close together and so tall.

Key species: Mahogany, ebony, rosewood, rubber, and canes and bamboos as undergrowth. Timber here is generally hardwood but the very density that makes it valuable also makes logging difficult, so commercial exploitation is lower than in deciduous belts.

Think of this forest like a crowded Mumbai local at peak hour: every inch is occupied, everyone is packed close, and there's no room for anything low to the ground to spread out. That crowding is exactly the "dense, closed canopy" idea examiners test.

A layered structure is the other feature worth remembering. Look up in an evergreen forest and you'll find at least three storeys of growth: a tall upper canopy competing for direct sunlight, a middle layer of shorter trees adapted to filtered light, and a shaded floor of ferns, mosses, and climbers that survive on whatever light leaks through. Because the trees never lose their leaves all at once, there is no clear "season" here the way there is in a deciduous forest. You will not find grass on the forest floor either; too little sunlight reaches the ground for grass to establish. This is why evergreen belts, for all their biodiversity, support very little grazing and very little commercial timber extraction compared to the deciduous belt next door.

3. Tropical Deciduous Forest

This is India's most widespread forest type by area, covering the largest share of forest cover in the country. Found in regions with 70 to 200 cm rainfall. "Deciduous" means these trees shed their leaves for a part of the year, typically before summer, to conserve water during the dry months.

Exam-writers split this into two sub-types based on rainfall within that band:

  • Moist deciduous: 100 to 200 cm rainfall. Found on the eastern side of the peninsula, Odisha, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the sub-Himalayan Terai belt. Key species: teak, sal, shisham, sandalwood.
  • Dry deciduous: 70 to 100 cm rainfall. Found in the interior peninsular plateau, parts of Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab's drier tracts. Trees here are shorter and more widely spaced, with grassy patches between them. Key species: teak, sal, khair, axlewood.

Exam trap: teak and sal both appear in moist AND dry deciduous lists, and students assume they're evergreen-belt trees because teak is such a prized hardwood. They are not. Teak is the signature tree of deciduous, not evergreen, forest, and it's one of the most repeated single facts in this chapter's MCQs.

Memory hook: for moist deciduous species, remember "Teak Sits Steady Somewhere" for Teak, Sal, Shisham, Sandalwood.

Deciduous forest is also where most of India's commercial forestry and grazing happens. The trees are more widely spaced than in the evergreen belt, sunlight reaches the ground more easily, and that supports a grassy undergrowth that evergreen forest cannot. That grass layer matters practically too, since it's what makes dry deciduous tracts usable for cattle grazing in a way dense rainforest never is. Leaf fall is timed to the dry season, typically peaking just before the pre-monsoon summer, and it is this seasonal shedding, not a lack of green colour overall, that gives "deciduous" forest its name. If you've ever walked through a forest patch in central India in April and noticed a carpet of dry leaves underfoot with the canopy looking thin, you've seen deciduous dormancy first-hand; the same forest looks completely different, dense and green, by August.

Sal deserves a separate mention because it is asked about almost as often as teak. Sal forest specifically dominates the moister eastern half of this belt, from the Chhotanagpur plateau through Odisha and into parts of West Bengal, and sal wood is prized for railway sleepers and construction because of its strength and resistance to termites, a fact worth pinning down since exams sometimes ask which timber species was historically used for railway sleepers before steel and concrete sleepers became standard.

4. Tropical Thorn and Scrub Forest

Found where rainfall drops below 70 cm, in the semi-arid and arid tracts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, and western Madhya Pradesh. Vegetation here has adapted to survive long dry spells the way a camel survives without water for days: small, thick leaves or spines that cut down water loss, deep or widespread roots to chase scarce groundwater, and long dormant periods.

Key species: babool (acacia), khejri, cactus, wild date palm (khajur), and thorny scrub grasses.

This vegetation looks sparse and unimpressive next to a rainforest, but every feature is a water-saving adaptation, not a sign of poor soil alone. That's the conceptual point examiners occasionally test with an "assertion-reason" style question.

Trees here rarely grow tall or close together, since dense canopy would mean more competition for the little water available. Khejri, in particular, is worth remembering beyond its botanical entry: it is central to Rajasthan's rural economy, used as fodder, fuelwood, and shade for crops in otherwise bare terrain, and it was at the heart of the historic Chipko-precursor Bishnoi movement of 1730 in Khejarli village, where villagers sacrificed their lives protecting khejri trees from being felled. That single fact links this chapter's botany to a current-affairs and environmental-history question that recurs in general awareness sections. Grasses in this zone tend to grow in short, sparse tufts rather than a continuous cover, leaving visible patches of bare soil between plants, which is itself a water-conservation strategy since a continuous grass mat would compete harder for the same scarce moisture.

5. Montane (Mountain) Forest

This is where altitude takes over as the deciding factor instead of rainfall. As you climb the Himalayas, vegetation changes in belts, mirroring the sequence you'd see travelling from the equator to the poles, compressed into a single mountainside.

Exam trap: students confuse deodar (a Himalayan conifer, found in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, prized for construction timber) with teak (a peninsular deciduous hardwood). Different climate zone, different tree, different use. If a question mentions "coffin wood" or high-altitude construction timber from Himachal, the answer is deodar, not teak.

Southern hill ranges have their own montane variant too: the Nilgiri, Anaimalai, and Palni hills in the Western Ghats support a cooler forest type locally called shola forest, patches of stunted evergreen forest in valley folds, alternating with open grassland on the slopes. This is a favourite one-liner in RRB papers because it's the only tropical-latitude temperate-type forest most students haven't heard of by name.

Notice the logic behind the shola pattern before you memorise it: valleys trap moisture and are sheltered from wind, so trees establish there, while the exposed slopes above stay too cold, too dry, and too wind-battered for anything but grass. It's the same reason a village tends to cluster in a sheltered river valley rather than spread evenly across an open, wind-exposed ridge. Below the temperate belt, between roughly 1,000 and 2,000 metres, wet temperate forest dominated by oak and chestnut forms a transition zone, still broadleaved like a deciduous forest lower down but adapted to cooler, moister mountain conditions. Above 3,000 metres the alpine zone thins out further into stunted, wind-pruned shrubs and eventually into the treeless meadows locally called bugyal or marg, familiar to anyone who has seen photographs of high-altitude Himalayan trekking routes in Uttarakhand or Kashmir, before vegetation gives way entirely to the tundra-type zone above 4,000 metres.

6. Mangrove (Tidal/Littoral) Forest

Found along river deltas and coastlines where fresh river water meets sea water, in waterlogged saline soil. India has the largest mangrove cover of any country's single mangrove system in the Sundarbans delta (West Bengal, shared with Bangladesh), formed by the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta.

Character: Mangrove trees have specialised roots called pneumatophores (breathing roots) that stick up out of the waterlogged mud to take in oxygen, since the soil itself is oxygen-starved. Picture them like snorkels poking above waterlogged ground, letting the tree "breathe" even when its main roots sit underwater at high tide.

Where: Sundarbans (West Bengal) is the largest single stretch; other patches occur in the Mahanadi, Godavari, and Krishna deltas, and along the Andaman & Nicobar coastline.

Key species: Sundari (which gives the Sundarbans its name), mangrove palm, keora.

Mangroves matter for more than botany marks: they buffer the coast against cyclones and storm surges, which is why every cyclone-related current affairs question about the eastern coast eventually loops back to mangrove degradation as a vulnerability factor. When a mangrove belt is cleared for shrimp farms or construction, the coastline right behind it loses a natural wave-breaker, and storm surge damage during the next cyclone gets noticeably worse. That's not a stretch; it's the documented reasoning behind why coastal Odisha and West Bengal invest in mangrove restoration alongside cyclone shelters.

Mangrove trees tolerate salt water through another adaptation worth knowing: many species can filter out salt at the root or excrete it through their leaves, letting them survive in conditions that would kill an ordinary tree within days. Beyond the Sundarbans, other notable Indian mangrove patches include the Bhitarkanika mangroves in Odisha's Mahanadi delta, well known as a saltwater crocodile habitat and Olive Ridley turtle nesting ground, and the Pichavaram mangroves in Tamil Nadu, one of the few mangrove forests found on a relatively low-rainfall stretch of India's east coast. A quick way to keep west-coast versus east-coast mangrove distribution straight: mangroves need a delta or estuary, and India's biggest deltas (Ganga-Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna) all sit on the east coast, which is exactly why the great majority of India's mangrove cover sits on the eastern seaboard rather than the west.

7. Forest Cover Statistics — India State of Forest Report

The Forest Survey of India (FSI), headquartered in Dehradun, is the government body responsible for assessing India's forest cover. It publishes the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) every two years using satellite imagery.

Exam trap, and the most important distinction in this entire chapter:

  • Forest cover = all land, one hectare or more, with tree canopy density over 10%, regardless of legal ownership or land classification. This includes plantations, orchards, and bamboo — anything with sufficient canopy, on any land.
  • Forest area (recorded forest area) = land legally notified as forest under law, regardless of whether trees actually grow there.
  • Tree cover = tree patches smaller than one hectare, outside the forest-cover definition (roadside avenues, small groves).

These three numbers are never equal, and exam-setters love asking "which one is highest." As of recent ISFR cycles, forest cover in India is a little over 21% of the country's geographic area, while the National Forest Policy target (see below) is 33%.

State-wise pattern to remember: Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest cover by area among all states. Mizoram has the highest forest cover as a percentage of its own geographical area among the states. Lakshadweep has the highest forest cover percentage among Union Territories.

8. National Forest Policy

India's National Forest Policy, 1988 set the target that forest and tree cover should occupy 33% of India's total geographical area, with a specific sub-target of two-thirds forest cover in hilly and mountainous regions to check erosion and landslides. This 1988 policy revised an earlier 1952 policy and shifted the emphasis from purely commercial forestry toward conservation and meeting the needs of local communities living near forests.

Exam trap: the 33% target is one of the most repeated single numbers in this whole chapter. Do not confuse it with the actual achieved forest cover figure (about 21%, see above). "Target" and "achieved" are two different numbers and examiners deliberately set traps asking for one when the question describes the other.
