Chapter 10 — Linear and circular seating

Draw positions before assigning names

In a linear arrangement, draw one slot per person and label the facing direction. Place fixed-end facts first, then immediate-neighbour facts, then relative left/right constraints. If everyone faces north, your page left and right agree with their left and right. If everyone faces south, they reverse. For mixed facing, mark an arrow over each person and interpret left/right from that person's perspective.

Circular orientation

For a circle, choose one person as an anchor at the top; rotations of the entire seating arrangement represent the same arrangement. If all face the centre, a person's left is clockwise in the usual top-view drawing; if all face outward, it is anticlockwise. Verify this with a single stick-figure at the top before placing anyone else. Do not memorize a direction without checking the drawing orientation. “Immediately to the left” means the adjacent seat; “second to the left” skips one seat.

Work a small example

Five people A, B, C, D and E sit in a row facing north. If C is in the middle, B sits immediately left of C, and E is at the right end, draw _ B C _ E before assigning A and D. The remaining two names occupy slots 1 and 4, and one more clue must decide which. This is a useful reminder: if the clues allow two arrangements, do not invent a choice. In circular seating, use the same slot discipline and write names once the constraints determine them.

Test every clue

After obtaining an arrangement, reread each clue against it. One reversed left/right can make several later clues seem impossible. For a multiple-choice question, sometimes you need only establish the relative position asked rather than enumerate every seat. Still, the answer must be true in every arrangement consistent with the clues. Keep a small branch for genuine alternatives instead of treating a guess as a deduction.
