AP Police Reasoning — Verbal & Non-Verbal Complete Guide (800 Questions) · Chapter 2
Chapter 2 — Classification and odd-one-out

Find the shared property first

An odd-one-out problem has three members that satisfy one clear property and one that does not. Your task is to identify the common rule, not merely to describe the unusual member. For words, possible properties include category, function, origin or part–whole relation. For numbers, inspect parity, prime status, divisibility, digit pattern, perfect squares and arithmetic relationships. For letter clusters, turn letters into positions and compare gaps. A word can belong to several broad categories, so prefer a property that distinguishes exactly three from one.

Make the rule testable

Suppose the options are 16, 25, 36 and 48. The first three are perfect squares; 48 is not. “48 is larger” fails because 36 is not larger than 48, but that is not a three-member shared property. When words are used, avoid vague reasoning such as “these are familiar objects.” Write a short rule that could be applied to a new item. If it is a letter cluster, check whether the letters rise by equal gaps, whether the middle letter is halfway between its neighbours, or whether the first and last positions sum to a constant.

Counted-category questions

Some classification items ask how many words in a list belong to a named class. Read the class label first, then inspect every item once. Mark a tick only for a genuine member, not a close associate. If the class is musical instruments, a composer and a musical style are not instruments. Count the ticks after the whole list; counting mentally while scanning often causes a skipped or double-counted word. Distinguish a biological category from habitat or use: a whale lives in water but is a mammal.

Avoid accidental exceptions

There can be two plausible rules for a weak item. In this book, use the explanation to see which explicit rule the question intends. When practising without the explanation, test whether your rule makes three members alike and the fourth genuinely different. For numerical choices, calculate before guessing from visual appearance. For clusters, keep an A–Z position strip nearby until shifts become automatic. Review a mistake by stating the property and showing how each of the four choices does or does not meet it.
