The Western Ghats are close to the Arabian Sea, so many west-flowing rivers are shorter and have steep gradients. Periyar, Bharathapuzha, Pamba, Sharavathi, Mandovi and Zuari are useful names for Kerala, Karnataka and Goa geography. Their questions often test state, source range, direction, estuary and hydropower rather than long tributary lists.
