The same river can support agriculture and create risk. Floods are shaped by rainfall, snowmelt, sediment, channel capacity, embankments, land use and wetland loss. Drought is not simply absence of rain; basin storage, groundwater, cropping pattern and demand matter. Ecological-flow questions ask what must remain in a river for ecosystems and downstream users.

Mahanadi

Common confusion: Hirakud is not on Godavari.
Godavari
Rises near Trimbakeshwar in Maharashtra; crosses the Deccan and reaches the Bay of Bengal.
