11. Dams, barrages, reservoirs and river-valley projects
Free study material · concepts, shortcuts & solved questions
A dam is a structure; a reservoir is the stored water body; a barrage regulates flow through gates; a weir is a low diversion structure. “Multipurpose project” means that more than one function is intended, such as irrigation, hydropower, drinking water, flood moderation or navigation. These distinctions prevent careless matching.
Exam lens For UPSC, a dam answer should include benefits and costs: irrigation and power alongside displacement, sediment trapping, downstream ecology, rehabilitation, seismic risk and interstate coordination. |

Solved practice
Question | Answer standard |
Write a two-line direct answer suitable for SSC/RRB. | Fact first; precise association second. |
Write a four-line analytical answer suitable for UPSC preparation. | Geography → use → consequence → governance/ecology. |
Frame a matching question. | Match river, source, tributary, state or project. |
Create a reverse-recall prompt. | Project or mouth → river and basin. |
Revision task Close the book. Reproduce the chapter’s river chain in six links: source → direction → tributaries → states → mouth → project/issue. Then record one mistake in your error log. |
