The Government of India Act 1858 transferred power from the Company to the British Crown. The office of Secretary of State for India, assisted by the India Council, was created; the Governor-General also became the Viceroy. Queen Victoria’s Proclamation promised non-interference in religion and equal treatment in principle, while the colonial state reorganised the army and strengthened princely alliances.

Exam lens

The post-1858 policy was not democratic self-government. It was a more centralised imperial administration that sought to prevent another broad uprising. Army recruitment increasingly favoured groups the colonial state classified as “martial races,” a policy with social and political consequences.
