Reform movements combined criticism of social practices with new education and print debate. Raja Rammohan Roy founded the Brahmo Samaj in 1828; Swami Dayanand Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj in 1875; Sir Syed Ahmad Khan promoted modern education through the Aligarh movement. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar supported widow remarriage, and the Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act was passed in 1856. Reform was not a single westernisation project: movements differed in theology, social programme and constituency.
