Good time management in an online test comes down to knowing the interface in advance, budgeting time per section, and refusing to get stuck on any single question. The seven tips below cover what to do before the exam and how to pace yourself during it.

Before the test

1. Learn the exam interface in advance

Know how to move between questions, mark for review, submit answers and use built-in tools such as the calculator or timer. Practising on the same interface beforehand means you spend zero exam time figuring out buttons.

2. Read the instructions carefully

Spend the first few minutes reading the instructions properly. Marking schemes, sectional time limits and navigation rules vary between exams, and a misread instruction can cost more time than the reading ever would.

3. Plan a time budget for each section

Before the exam, decide how many minutes each section gets, based on the number of questions and their difficulty for you. Stick to the budget during the test. If you finish a section early, use the spare minutes to review answers or return to harder questions.

During the test

4. Answer the easy questions first

Scan the questions and secure the ones you can answer confidently. This banks marks early, builds momentum, and leaves the remaining time for genuinely difficult questions.

5. Check the timer at regular intervals

Glance at the clock at fixed checkpoints, for example after every 10 questions, rather than constantly. If you are behind your budget, speed up or start skipping low-confidence questions.

6. Never get stuck on one question

If a question is not yielding within your per-question limit, mark it for review and move on. One stubborn question can quietly consume the time needed for five answerable ones. Return to it only if time remains.

In your preparation

7. Build speed and accuracy through timed practice

Pacing is a trained skill. Take full-length timed mocks regularly so that working under a clock feels normal, and track both your speed and your accuracy; speed without accuracy loses marks to negative marking.

Quick checklist

  • Know the interface before exam day.
  • Read instructions fully at the start.
  • Fix a time budget per section and follow it.
  • Do easy questions first.
  • Check the timer at set checkpoints.
  • Skip and return rather than getting stuck.
  • Rehearse all of this in timed mocks.

To put these habits into practice under real exam conditions, take a timed mock test or sectional on Pareeksha.
