Most banking exams ask you to be a generalist. IBPS SO does the opposite. Here you are hired for what you studied, and the single paper that decides your rank, Professional Knowledge in the Mains, is built around your own degree. If you are an engineer, an agriculture graduate, a lawyer, an HR or marketing postgraduate or a Hindi postgraduate, this is one of the few bank exams where your subject is your biggest advantage.

This guide covers the current cycle, CRP SPL-XVI (vacancies of 2027-28), based on the official IBPS detailed notification dated 30 June 2026. It explains the six cadres, who is eligible for which post, how the Prelims, Mains and interview work, how the final merit is built, what the pay scale is, and how to plan your preparation. It ends with a cadre-wise Professional Knowledge topic list. That list is our own planning suggestion, because IBPS does not publish a detailed subject syllabus.

The notification gave registration dates of 1 to 21 July 2026. Coverage by reputable education sites reports the Prelims as held on 29 August 2026 and the Mains scheduled for 1 November 2026. Always confirm the live status, results and Mains call letter on the official IBPS website, because dates and results move.

The Six Cadres in Plain Language

IT Officer. Looks after systems, applications, networks, databases and information security in the bank. Usually the largest cadre by vacancies.

Agricultural Field Officer (AFO). Works on agriculture and allied lending, visits farms and rural branches, and appraises loans for crops, dairy, fisheries and farm infrastructure.

Rajbhasha Adhikari. Implements the Official Language policy in the bank: translation, Hindi correspondence, reports and compliance with Rajbhasha rules.

Law Officer. Handles legal matters of the bank such as recovery, documentation, litigation and legal opinions.

HR/Personnel Officer. Works on recruitment, training, performance systems, industrial relations and staff welfare.

Marketing Officer. Works on promoting and selling the bank's products and building business and brand.

Vacancies in CRP SPL-XVI

The table below reproduces the indicative totals from the Annexure of the original IBPS notification. IBPS itself notes that vacancies are indicative, may include backlog, and that allotment will follow the actual vacancies reported by the banks. Some banks did not report vacancies (marked NR in the annexure), and the Marketing Officer total was shown as zero. Some websites mention a revised total after the notification; we could not confirm any revision from the official notice, so check the latest IBPS announcement.

The participating banks are Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Punjab National Bank, Punjab and Sind Bank, UCO Bank and Union Bank of India. Only a few banks reported vacancies for each post, so the bank you can be allotted depends on your cadre and your rank.

Eligibility: Cadre by Cadre

Age and nationality rules are common to all posts. The educational qualification is checked as on 21.07.2026, and the final result must have been declared on or before that date. IBPS states that no equivalent qualification will be considered, so match your degree to the wording below, and read the exact notification text before you apply.

PostEducational qualification (summary of the notification)
IT Officer4-year Engineering/Technology degree in Computer Science, Computer Applications, IT, Electronics, Electronics and Telecommunications, Electronics and Communication or Electronics and Instrumentation; OR a postgraduate degree in Electronics, Electronics and Telecommunication, Electronics and Communication, Electronics and Instrumentation, Computer Science, IT or Computer Applications; OR a graduate who has passed DOEACC 'B' level
Agricultural Field Officer4-year degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Science, Dairy Science, Fishery Science, Pisciculture, Agri Marketing and Cooperation, Cooperation and Banking, Agro-Forestry, Forestry, Agricultural Biotechnology, B.Tech Biotechnology, Food Science, Agriculture Business Management, Food Technology, Dairy Technology, Agricultural Engineering, Sericulture or Fisheries Engineering

Marketing OfficerGraduate plus a two-year full-time MMS (Marketing), MBA (Marketing), or PGDBA/PGDBM/PGPM/PGDM with specialisation in Marketing

Points that cause rejections

  • For dual specialisations, one of the fields must be the prescribed one. For major and minor specialisations, the major must be in the prescribed stream. A PG degree or diploma with more than two specialisations is not eligible.
  • For every post other than IT Officer, you need a certificate, diploma or degree in computer operations or language, or you must have studied Computer or IT as a subject at school, college or institute.
  • Percentage is calculated on aggregate marks across all years or semesters, and fractions are ignored, so 59.99% counts as below 60%. CGPA must be converted using your university norms.
  • Law Officer candidates need bar enrolment, not just an LL.B result. Check the date requirement in the notice.
  • If you apply under a reserved category, keep the certificate in the prescribed format. OBC certificates must carry the non-creamy layer clause and be issued on or after 01.04.2026, as per the notification.

Age limit

The candidate must be born between 02.07.1996 and 01.07.2006, both dates inclusive. Upper age relaxation is 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer), 10 years for persons with benchmark disabilities, and 5 years for eligible ex-servicemen and commissioned officers, subject to government guidelines. Relaxation for SC/ST/OBC is allowed cumulatively with only one of the other categories.

Selection Process Overview

The process is two-tier online plus an interview. You take the Prelims. Shortlisted candidates take the Mains. Those who clear the Mains cut-offs are called for a common interview conducted by the participating banks. Finally, ranked candidates are provisionally allotted to a bank according to vacancies reported, reservation rules and administrative needs. The validity of the CRP ends one year after the provisional allotment or when a fresh allotment is made, whichever is earlier.

One thing to note from the notification: the weight sits on the Mains. Marks in the Prelims are only for qualifying and shortlisting. Marks in the Mains and interview decide your final merit.

Preliminary Exam Pattern

The Prelims is an 80-minute online test of 100 questions for 125 marks, with sectional timing of 20 minutes per test. The structure depends on the cadre.

IT Officer, Agricultural Field Officer, HR/Personnel Officer and Marketing Officer

TestQuestionsMarksTimeMedium
English Language252520 minEnglish
Reasoning252520 minEnglish and Hindi
Quantitative Aptitude252520 minEnglish and Hindi
Professional Knowledge255020 minEnglish and Hindi
Total10012580 min

Law Officer and Rajbhasha Adhikari

Quantitative Aptitude is replaced by General Awareness with Special Reference to the Banking Industry (25 questions, 25 marks, 20 minutes). The other three tests are the same as above.

Two rules matter here. First, each test has a minimum cut-off, and you must clear all four tests to be considered, according to the notification. Second, Professional Knowledge carries 2 marks per question, so it is worth double any other Prelims question. A strong subject score helps, but a weak English or Reasoning section can still knock you out.

Main Exam Pattern

The Mains has an objective part of 150 questions for 200 marks in 125 minutes, followed by a descriptive paper of 2 questions for 25 marks in 30 minutes, making 225 marks and 155 minutes in all.

IT Officer, AFO, HR/Personnel Officer and Marketing Officer

Reasoning404035 min
Quantitative Aptitude303025 min
Professional Knowledge (Objective)5010040 min
Descriptive Paper (English)22530 min
Total225155 min

Law Officer

English (30 questions, 25 min), Reasoning (40, 35 min), General Awareness with Special Reference to the Banking Industry (30, 20 min), Professional Knowledge Objective (50 questions, 100 marks, 45 min), and a Descriptive Paper in English (2 questions, 25 marks, 30 min).

Rajbhasha Adhikari

The same objective structure as Law Officer, but the last test is a Professional Knowledge Descriptive Paper (2 questions, 25 marks, 30 min) which can be attempted in English and Hindi.

What the notification says about qualifying

In the Main exam, all tests except Professional Knowledge are qualifying in nature, and merit listing is done on the basis of scores in Professional Knowledge. In practical terms, English, Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude or General Awareness only need to clear the cut-off IBPS sets. Your rank is driven by the 100-mark Professional Knowledge test. Every question there is worth 2 marks, and each wrong answer costs 0.5 marks.

Some coaching sites describe the descriptive paper differently, and a few list the Mains as a single 200-mark paper. Rely on the official notification and the Information Handout released with the call letter, because the structure can be changed by IBPS.

Negative Marking, Normalisation and Cut-offs

For every wrong answer in an objective test, one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. A Professional Knowledge question in the Prelims carries 2 marks, so a wrong answer costs 0.5. In the Mains, Professional Knowledge questions also carry 2 marks, with the same 0.5 penalty. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.

If the exam is held in multiple sessions, corrected scores are normalised using the equi-percentile method, and scores are taken up to two decimal places.

For the Mains, you must score the minimum in each test and also score high enough in Professional Knowledge to be shortlisted for the interview. IBPS decides the cut-offs based on vacancies. Main scores are not shared with shortlisted candidates before the interview process is complete.

Interview, Final Merit and Provisional Allotment

The interview carries 100 marks. The minimum qualifying marks will not be less than 40 percent, and 35 percent for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD candidates. The relative weightage of Online Main and interview is 80:20. The combined score is the total of your Main score and interview score under that ratio, and you must qualify in both and rank high enough in merit for allotment.

Interviews are conducted by the participating banks, coordinated by nodal banks, at select centres. Your call letter will give the venue and date, and requests to change them are not entertained.

Two practical points. First, document upload is mandatory: you will upload requisite documents in PDF through a link on the IBPS website, and originals plus self-attested photocopies are needed at the interview. Second, candidates working in government, quasi-government or public sector bodies (including nationalised banks) must carry a No Objection Certificate that is not specific to any one bank.

What a specialist panel is likely to probe

The notification does not describe the interview content, so this is a preparation suggestion. Expect questions on your academic background and your cadre's core concepts, why you want a bank job, awareness of banking and economy, and situational questions linked to the role. A Law candidate may be asked about recovery or documentation, an AFO candidate about crop loans and farm finance, an IT candidate about security or core banking systems. Prepare your final-year project, internship and work experience as if each could be a topic.

Salary and Career

The notification gives the Scale I pay as Basic Rs 48,480-2000/7-62480-2340/2-67160-2680/7-85920. The official will also be eligible for allowances and perquisites as per the rules of the participating bank in force from time to time.

That means the starting basic is Rs 48,480, and the take-home depends on DA, HRA, city category, bank policy and deductions. Websites quote in-hand figures anywhere from the low Rs 60,000s to about Rs 90,000, and they do not agree, so treat those as rough. Ask the allotted bank for the exact structure at joining.

Scale I is the entry grade for officers. Promotion to higher scales follows the bank's internal policy, and specialist officers generally progress within their stream, though the rules differ from bank to bank. Check the allotted bank's service rules rather than relying on general claims.

We have not verified any official year-wise score tables for this cycle, so this guide does not quote numbers. What is clear from the process is how cut-offs work. They are post-wise and category-wise. They depend on the number of vacancies and the number of applicants for that cadre. Cadres with few vacancies can behave very differently from a cadre with a large pool of applicants, so never assume one cadre's cut-off applies to another.

For the latest and past-year cut-offs, download the official cut-off PDFs from the IBPS website for the previous recruitments and compare the Main cut-off in Professional Knowledge with the final provisional allotment cut-off. Use them to understand the range, not as a promise for this year.

A sensible rule is to treat the Professional Knowledge test as your rank-maker. Aim to be accurate and well above the average of mock test takers in your subject, instead of chasing a number from the internet.

Section Strategy for the Common Papers

English Language

Reading comprehension, cloze test, error spotting, sentence rearrangement and vocabulary. This section is qualifying in the Mains but counts in the Prelims cut-off, so do not neglect it. Read one editorial a day, practise two reading passages daily, and learn grammar rules once instead of memorising answers.

Reasoning

Puzzles and seating arrangements, syllogism, inequalities, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense and input-output. These are scoring if practised regularly. The Mains has 40 questions in 35 minutes, so build speed on arrangements and puzzles.

Quantitative Aptitude (IT, AFO, HR, Marketing)

Simplification and approximation, number series, data interpretation, and arithmetic topics such as percentage, ratio, profit and loss, time and work, and interest. Aim for accuracy first. Because negative marking is one-fourth, guessing blindly is a poor trade.

General Awareness with Banking (Law, Rajbhasha)

Banking terms, RBI functions, monetary policy basics, financial institutions, schemes and current affairs of the last six to eight months. Make short notes and revise them weekly.

Descriptive paper

Two questions, 30 minutes, 25 marks, usually a letter and an essay for English papers. Practise writing to the clock and keep a clear structure of introduction, body points and conclusion. The notification does not state the exact format, so confirm it in the Information Handout.

Cadre-Wise Professional Knowledge Topic List

IBPS does not give a detailed Professional Knowledge syllabus in the notification, only the name of the test. • Sanskrit stream candidates: basic Sanskrit grammar and literature, along with Hindi.
  • Descriptive writing: essay, letter, official notes and summaries in Hindi or English as allowed.

Preparation Plan: A 16-Week Framework

This plan is our suggestion. Adjust it to your date of exam and your starting level. If the Mains is close, compress the early phases and stay with the Professional Knowledge revision.

Weeks 1 to 4: Foundation

  • Collect your degree notes and one standard book per core subject of your cadre.
  • Study Professional Knowledge for 2 hours daily, one subject at a time.
  • Spend 1 hour on English, Reasoning and Quant basics. Learn formulas, grammar rules and arrangement patterns.
  • Start a daily 20-minute current affairs and banking awareness routine, especially if you are in Law or Rajbhasha.

Weeks 5 to 8: Depth and practice

  • Finish first reading of all Professional Knowledge topics.
  • Solve topic-wise MCQs after each topic, and keep an error log.
  • Take one sectional test per week in each common subject.

Weeks 9 to 12: Prelims-style tests

  • Take a full Prelims-pattern test twice a week: 100 questions in 80 minutes.
  • Practise 20-minute sections strictly. Learn when to skip.
  • Revise your Professional Knowledge notes weekly.

Weeks 13 to 16: Mains and interview

  • Switch to Mains-style tests: 150 questions in 125 minutes, then the descriptive paper in 30 minutes.
  • In Professional Knowledge, practise 50 questions in 40 to 45 minutes, and review every wrong answer.
  • Write one letter or essay every two days and have it checked by a teacher or peer.
  • Prepare interview answers: introduction, subject basics, banking awareness, why the bank.

Weekly rhythm

A workable week is five days of study plus one mock test day and one light revision day. On mock day, spend as much time analysing as taking the test. A mock you do not analyse teaches very little.

Target Score Logic (Planning Suggestion)

Since only Professional Knowledge decides merit in the Mains, think of it in two parts. First, clear the qualifying tests with a safe margin. Second, maximise the 100 marks in Professional Knowledge. With 50 questions at 2 marks and a 0.5 penalty, an answer is worth attempting when you are reasonably sure. If you can eliminate two options and are left with a coin flip, the expected gain is still positive but small, so use your judgement. If you are guessing blindly among four options, the expected value is slightly negative.

In your mocks, track three numbers: attempts, accuracy and net score in Professional Knowledge. A gradual rise in accuracy matters more than raw attempts.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying without checking the exact degree wording. Check specialisation, full-time status and result dates before paying the fee.
  • Treating the Prelims as a formality. Each test has its own cut-off, so a weak English section can end your attempt.
  • Ignoring qualifying sections in the Mains. They do not add to merit, but failing them removes you from merit.
  • Reading too many books. One main book and a good question bank per subject beat five half-read books.
  • Skipping the descriptive paper. It is a separate test with its own writing demands. Practise with a timer.
  • Using outdated law notes. Law and HR aspirants should update notes for new codes and amendments.
  • Delaying documents. Caste, EWS, NOC, degree and bar enrolment documents can take time. Arrange them early.
  • Ignoring interview prep until the result. The interview carries 20 percent of final merit. Start light preparation early.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many posts can I apply for in IBPS SO? Only one. The notification states that multiple applications will be rejected.

Is there an interview in IBPS SO? Yes. The interview is for 100 marks and carries 20 percent weightage against 80 percent for the Mains.

Do Prelims marks count in the final merit? No. Per the notification, marks in the Online Main exam are considered for shortlisting for interview and for final merit listing. The Prelims is for qualifying and shortlisting.

Which Mains section decides my rank? Professional Knowledge. The other tests are qualifying in nature, according to the notification.

What is the negative marking? One-fourth of the marks of the question for each wrong answer. For a 2-mark Professional Knowledge question, the penalty is 0.5. There is no penalty for unanswered questions.

Is there a descriptive paper? Yes, in the Mains: 2 questions, 25 marks, 30 minutes. For Rajbhasha Adhikari it is a Professional Knowledge descriptive paper that can be written in English and Hindi.

What is the age limit? 20 to 30 years as on 01.07.2026, with relaxation for SC/ST, OBC non-creamy layer, PwBD and eligible ex-servicemen.

Can a final-year student apply? The notification requires the final result to have been declared on or before 21.07.2026, so students whose results were pending on that date were not eligible this cycle. Check the rule in the next notice.

What is the starting salary? The Scale I basic starts at Rs 48,480, with allowances as per the bank's rules. Gross and take-home figures vary by bank and city.

Where will I be posted? You are provisionally allotted to one of the participating banks based on rank, category and reported vacancies, and the bank has the final say on appointment.

Practise Before the Real Test

IBPS SO rewards steady subject work plus exam-hall discipline. Learn your Professional Knowledge deeply, keep the common sections at a safe qualifying level, and rehearse the timing. Take full-length mocks and sectional tests on Pareeksha to build speed in the common sections, test your accuracy under negative marking, and see where you are losing marks before the Mains.
