Jharkhand Staff Nurse, ANM and GNM Recruitment 2026: Eligibility, Exam Pattern, Syllabus and Guide
Start a free mock test Practice by topic

Nursing is one of the few government careers where a diploma or degree, rather than a general graduation, opens the door, and where the demand from the public health system is steady. In Jharkhand, nurses and auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) staff medical college hospitals, district hospitals, sub-divisional hospitals, community health centres, primary health centres and health sub-centres. Many of the state's health programmes on maternal and child health, immunisation and tuberculosis depend on them at the last mile.

Students often search for one exam called "Jharkhand Staff Nurse exam," but the reality is a little more complicated. Different posts, ANM, GNM and Staff Nurse, are advertised at different times, and the recruiting body has varied: in some cycles it has been the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), in others the Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Department or a district-level health society for contractual posts. This guide explains the stable structure, which is the eligibility rules and the syllabus, and is careful about the parts that change. Confirm the recruiting body, dates, fees and number of posts in the current official advertisement.

Latest Notification and How Recruitment Works

There is no fixed calendar for nursing recruitment in Jharkhand. Vacancies arise when the health department finalises the requirement and sends it to the recruiting body, or when a district or a National Health Mission unit invites applications for contractual posts. The following pathways commonly exist:

  1. Regular posts through a selection body. The requirement is advertised as a competitive examination or a merit-based process, and successful candidates are appointed to permanent posts in the health department or in government medical colleges.
  2. Contractual posts under health missions. ANMs, staff nurses and community health officers may be engaged on contract, often through district-level advertisements with a merit list based on marks in the qualifying course, sometimes with a short test or interview.
  3. Institution-specific recruitment. Some medical colleges or hospitals recruit staff nurses on their own advertisement.

Because these pathways are different, two candidates with the same qualification may be applying to very different processes. The single most useful habit is to read every advertisement in full and note three things: who is recruiting, whether it is a permanent or contractual post, and what the selection method is.

What the Job Actually Is

ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife) works mainly at sub-centre and community level. The role includes antenatal check-ups, supporting safe deliveries and postnatal care, immunisation sessions, family planning counselling, health education, maintaining registers, and coordinating with community health workers. In Jharkhand the community health worker under the National Health Mission is known as the Sahiyya, and the ANM works closely with her in village outreach.

GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) / Staff Nurse works in hospitals and health centres. A staff nurse administers medication, monitors vital signs, assists in procedures and surgeries, provides wound care, maintains patient charts, handles emergency support, educates patients and families, and observes infection-control practices. In a busy district hospital, the duties rotate across wards such as medicine, surgery, maternity, paediatrics and casualty, often in shifts including nights.

The job is physically demanding and emotionally heavy, but it also offers respect in the community and a direct ability to help people. If you like structured clinical work and are comfortable with long shifts, it can be rewarding.

Post and Vacancy Structure

We do not quote vacancy counts here because they are fixed by each advertisement. In general you will see:

  • Separate advertisement lines for ANM and for Staff Nurse (GNM or B.Sc. Nursing).
  • Vacancies distributed by category with reservation as per state rules, and in some posts a horizontal reservation for women or for persons with disabilities.
  • For contractual posts, district-wise vacancy lists.

Nurses in the health system may also be promoted to posts such as Senior Staff Nurse, Nursing Sister or Nursing Superintendent, and to tutor or teaching roles in nursing schools and colleges with additional qualifications.

Eligibility

Educational qualification

The core qualification depends on the post.

  • ANM posts: Passed the ANM course (a two-year programme) recognised by the Indian Nursing Council (INC) and the state nursing council, after Class 12 in most cases. The entry requirement for the course has itself changed over time, so what matters is that your certificate is recognised.
  • Staff Nurse posts: GNM diploma (3 years plus internship, commonly quoted as three and a half years) or B.Sc. Nursing (4 years) from an institution recognised by the INC and the state nursing council.

Registration with a nursing council

This is the requirement that catches candidates off guard. To work as a nurse or ANM, you must be registered with the state nursing council, and sometimes registration must be valid at the date of application or by the date of joining. The advertisement states the exact rule. If your course was completed in another state, look at the process for getting registered or transferring registration to the Jharkhand council. Do not delay this step; it can take weeks.

Age limit

The advertisement sets minimum and maximum ages and a cut-off date. Relaxations apply for reserved categories, women, and sometimes existing contractual workers or persons with disabilities according to the state rules. We do not fix numbers here because they change.

Domicile and other state-specific points

For many state health posts, preference or reservation is tied to residence in Jharkhand, and the caste certificate for reserved categories must usually be from the state. Some advertisements for contractual posts give preference to candidates from the same district or block. Read the local rules, and keep your residence and caste certificates ready.

Application Process

The application is typically online through the portal of the recruiting body, or, for district-level contractual posts, through a district website with documents submitted by post or in person. In broad terms:

  1. Register with a mobile number and email.
  2. Fill in personal and educational details.
  3. Upload photo, signature, mark sheets, nursing council registration and category certificates in the specified formats.
  4. Pay any fee via the online mode. Fee amounts differ by category and cycle, so check the advertisement.
  5. Submit and save the acknowledgement.

Small mistakes, such as a mismatch between the name on the certificate and the registration, or an incorrect course duration, can delay verification. Correct these before applying, not afterwards.

Selection Stages

Depending on the pathway, the selection could be one of the following.

  • Written competitive examination followed by document verification. This is more likely for regular posts advertised through a selection body.
  • Merit list based on marks in the qualifying course, sometimes with weightage for experience or additional qualifications. This is common in district-level contractual recruitment.
  • Written test plus skill assessment or interview in some institution-level recruitment.

The mix is not the same every year. Prepare the written test in any case, since it is the most demanding form and it also prepares you for interviews.

Detailed Syllabus and How to Study It

If a written test is held for Staff Nurse, the questions are usually drawn from the GNM or B.Sc. Nursing curriculum, with a section on general knowledge. For ANM posts, the emphasis shifts towards community health, maternal and child health, and basic nursing. The topics below cover the practical range.

Fundamentals of nursing

Nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation), principles of asepsis, hand hygiene, standard precautions, vital signs and their normal ranges, positioning, bed making, hygiene care, oxygen therapy, catheterisation, nasogastric feeding, wound dressing, injections and their routes (intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous), calculations of doses and drip rates, and basic first aid. How to study: learn the normal values by heart and practise calculations daily.

Anatomy and physiology

The main body systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, nervous, endocrine, urinary, musculoskeletal, reproductive and the special senses. Learn organs, functions and common examples. Diagrams help more than text alone.

Microbiology, nutrition and biochemistry basics

Types of microorganisms, sterilisation and disinfection, immunity, vaccines, nutrients and deficiency diseases, balanced diet, and simple biochemical values.

Pharmacology

Drug classification, routes, common drugs and their uses and side effects, storage, abbreviations used in prescriptions, the "five rights" of medication administration, and the importance of checking allergies and expiry.

Medical-surgical nursing

Common conditions and nursing care: hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, respiratory diseases such as asthma and pneumonia, kidney disorders, liver disorders, fractures, burns, peri-operative care, and emergency conditions such as shock.

Maternal and child health nursing

Antenatal care, normal labour and its stages, postnatal care, care of the newborn, breastfeeding, danger signs in pregnancy, family planning methods, the immunisation schedule, growth monitoring, common childhood illnesses, and the schemes that support institutional delivery. The National Health Mission and the government's programmes, such as Janani Suraksha Yojana, are asked at a general level.

Community health nursing

Levels of health care (primary, secondary, tertiary), the structure of sub-centres, primary health centres and community health centres, epidemiology basics, communicable disease control (tuberculosis, malaria, dengue, diarrhoeal diseases), non-communicable disease screening, environmental sanitation, and health education. Malaria, kala-azar and tuberculosis are important in the public-health context of Jharkhand.

Mental health, ethics and professional issues

Basic psychiatric conditions and nursing care, ethics, patient rights, confidentiality, records and reports, and the role of nursing councils.

General knowledge and Jharkhand

Some papers include a section on general awareness. Prepare state basics: Jharkhand was formed on 15 November 2000 with Ranchi as its capital; the main rivers include Damodar, Subarnarekha and Koel; and the state has tribal communities such as the Santhal, Munda, Oraon and Ho. For health, know the state's major government hospital, the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, which is one of the important public hospitals of the state, and be aware that medical colleges also exist in places such as Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Hazaribagh and Dumka. Keep this general and check for the latest developments.

Exam Pattern

The table below shows the usual structure of a written test for nursing posts, to be verified for each cycle.

Part Typical content Note
Professional nursing Fundamentals, anatomy, medical-surgical, maternal and child, community health, pharmacology Largest share of questions
General knowledge State and country basics, current events Often a smaller share
Reasoning and numeracy Simple arithmetic, dosage-type calculations May be included

Duration, number of questions, marking scheme and negative marking are given in the advertisement. If the recruitment is merit-based, there may be no written test at all, and your marks in the qualifying course become the basis.

Salary, Pay Level and Career Growth

Regular Staff Nurse posts in the state health department are generally placed on a pay level fixed by the state government, with allowances. Contractual posts pay a fixed monthly amount that is stated in the advertisement or the health mission's order and is typically lower than regular scales. We do not quote figures since they vary by cycle and category.

Career growth for a regular nurse can include promotion to Senior Staff Nurse and Nursing Sister, and then to Assistant Nursing Superintendent and Nursing Superintendent as vacancies arise. Nurses may also pursue a B.Sc. (post-basic) or M.Sc. Nursing and move into teaching, public health nursing or specialised clinical roles such as ICU, operation theatre or dialysis. Many nurses also work in the private sector or abroad; that path needs its own licensing requirements.

Previous-Year Trend Discussion

We will not quote cut-offs, but a few observations are useful. Nursing recruitment cycles in many states are irregular, and contractual recruitment happens more often than permanent recruitment. Merit-list methods reward strong marks in your final examinations, so your course marks matter even if you never sit a written test. Documents are a frequent source of rejection: expired or missing council registration, certificates from an unrecognised institution, or missing category proof. Many candidates also underestimate the calculation and pharmacology questions, which reward regular practice.

Worked Practice Questions

Q1. The normal resting heart rate of an adult is: (a) 40 to 60 beats per minute (b) 60 to 100 beats per minute (c) 100 to 120 beats per minute (d) 120 to 140 beats per minute Answer: (b). A rate below 60 is bradycardia and above 100 is tachycardia in a resting adult.

Q2. Insulin is secreted by: (a) Alpha cells of the pancreas (b) Beta cells of the islets of Langerhans (c) Cells of the adrenal cortex (d) Thyroid follicles Answer: (b). Beta cells produce insulin, and alpha cells produce glucagon.

Q3. In a single-rescuer adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the ratio of chest compressions to breaths is: (a) 15:2 (b) 30:2 (c) 5:1 (d) 10:2 Answer: (b). The standard ratio is 30 compressions to 2 breaths, at a rate of about 100 to 120 compressions per minute.

Q4. A doctor orders 500 mL of intravenous fluid over 4 hours. If the drop factor is 20 drops per mL, the approximate drip rate is: (a) 21 drops per minute (b) 42 drops per minute (c) 63 drops per minute (d) 84 drops per minute Answer: (b). Total drops = 500 x 20 = 10,000. Total minutes = 4 x 60 = 240. Rate = 10,000 / 240 = about 41.7, so about 42 drops per minute.

Q5. The BCG vaccine, given at birth in India's immunisation schedule, protects against: (a) Polio (b) Tuberculosis (c) Measles (d) Hepatitis B Answer: (b). BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) is given as an intradermal injection to protect mainly against severe forms of childhood tuberculosis.

Q6. Which vitamin deficiency mainly leads to bleeding disorders in a newborn? (a) Vitamin A (b) Vitamin C (c) Vitamin D (d) Vitamin K Answer: (d). Vitamin K is needed for clotting factors, and newborns are routinely given a vitamin K injection to prevent haemorrhagic disease of the newborn.

Q7. The normal respiratory rate of a healthy adult at rest is: (a) 6 to 10 per minute (b) 12 to 20 per minute (c) 25 to 30 per minute (d) 30 to 40 per minute Answer: (b). Values outside this range at rest need attention, and respiratory rate is often the earliest warning sign of deterioration.

Q8. The normal duration of a full-term pregnancy is about: (a) 30 weeks (b) 34 weeks (c) 40 weeks (d) 46 weeks Answer: (c). Full-term pregnancy is about 40 weeks (280 days) from the last menstrual period, and delivery from 37 completed weeks is considered term.

Q9. Florence Nightingale is known as: (a) The Iron Lady (b) The Lady with the Lamp (c) The Angel of the Poor (d) The Nightingale of India Answer: (b). She is regarded as the founder of modern nursing and earned this name for her night rounds among wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. Sarojini Naidu was called "the Nightingale of India" for her poetry, not nursing.

Q10. Which of the following is one of the five rights of medication administration? (a) Right patient (b) Right doctor (c) Right hospital (d) Right nurse Answer: (a). The five rights are right patient, right drug, right dose, right route and right time. Many institutions add right documentation.

Month-by-Month Preparation Plan

Month 1: rebuild fundamentals. Revisit your GNM or ANM books and note down normal values, definitions and procedures. Decide a daily schedule, with about two hours of study and thirty minutes of revision.

Month 2: body systems and disease. Cover anatomy, physiology and medical-surgical nursing, system by system. Draw simple diagrams and write quick notes on nursing care.

Month 3: maternal, child and community health. These subjects carry significant weight, especially for ANM and community-level posts. Learn schedules such as immunisation and antenatal visits, danger signs and national programmes.

Month 4: pharmacology and calculations. Practise dosage and drip-rate problems, and learn commonly used drugs, their classes and side effects.

Month 5: general knowledge and practice tests. Prepare state basics and current events. Solve past questions from similar exams in other states, since the medical content overlaps heavily.

Month 6: revision, documents, registration. Revise notes weekly, take timed practice tests, and complete your document checklist, including nursing council registration, category and residence certificates and photographs.

Books and Resources

  • The standard GNM or ANM textbooks used in your course, since questions are usually based on this content.
  • A well-known question-bank book for nursing officer examinations, useful for practising the style.
  • The Indian Nursing Council and state nursing council websites for registration procedures.
  • The National Health Mission and Ministry of Health websites for national programmes, at a summary level.
  • Government guidelines on immunisation, and basic first-aid resources.

Common Mistakes

  1. Not registering with the nursing council in time. It can block your application or your joining.
  2. Ignoring calculations. Dosage and drip-rate questions are easy scoring items with practice.
  3. Skipping community health. It is a large part of the ANM paper and is also asked for staff nurses.
  4. Not distinguishing between contractual and regular posts. Know what you are applying for.
  5. Relying on old memory of procedures. Guidelines change, especially for immunisation and resuscitation, so use current sources.
  6. Poor document handling. Certificates from unrecognised institutions or name mismatches lead to rejection.
