Vacancy Details

The detailed CEN puts the total at 3,993 posts — revised down from the 4,098 announced in the short notice — across three groups:

  • Junior Engineer (JE): the large majority of posts, spread across Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics & allied engineering disciplines and across all RRB zones.
  • Depot Material Superintendent (DMS): stores and inventory management posts in railway depots (around 320 posts).
  • Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA): a small number of lab and materials-testing posts.

The exact post-wise and discipline-wise table is in Annexure A of the CEN, and the RRB-wise break-up in Annexure B. Among the larger zones reported: Kolkata 457, Mumbai 411, Chennai 362, Prayagraj 340, Guwahati 329, Bengaluru 298 and Ajmer 252. You apply to one RRB zone only, so compare vacancy numbers in Annexure B before choosing — our guide on how RRB zones work explains what that choice affects.

Eligibility

  • Age: 18–33 years as on 1 January 2027. Relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC (NCL), and as per rules for PwBD and other categories.
  • Education (JE): a 3-year Diploma or a Degree (B.E./B.Tech) in the relevant engineering discipline. Which branches map to which posts is specified post-wise in the CEN.
  • Education (DMS): engineering diploma/degree, as per the CEN.

How to Start Preparing Now

You have roughly three months before CBT 1. Start with the non-technical sections that decide the CBT 1 cut-off — our RRB JE preparation guide covers the CBT 1 vs CBT 2 strategy in depth, and you can benchmark yourself against the real pattern with Pareeksha's railway mock tests. For the technical section, begin systematic revision of your diploma/degree core subjects now rather than after CBT 1.
