If you want to become a government school teacher in Uttar Pradesh, UPTET is the gate you have to walk through first. It doesn't give you a job directly. It gives you eligibility. Without a valid TET certificate, you cannot even apply for a primary or upper primary teacher post in UP, no matter how good your degree is.
This year's cycle has already moved fast. The UPTET 2026 exam is done, over 17 lakh candidates showed up, and the result is due any day now. If you missed this attempt, don't worry, there's always a next cycle, and this guide will tell you exactly what to expect and how to prepare for it.

A quick note on the conducting body: UPTET used to be run by the Basic Shiksha Parishad through updeled.gov.in. From this cycle, the exam has moved under the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC), and the official portal is upessc.up.gov.in. Keep checking that site, not old bookmarked pages, because a lot of outdated blogs still point to the older domain.

What the job actually is
Passing UPTET makes you eligible to apply for the post of Assistant Teacher in UP government primary and upper primary schools, run by the Basic Shiksha Parishad and UP government aided schools. Paper 1 qualifies you for classes 1 to 5. Paper 2 qualifies you for classes 6 to 8.
Day to day, a primary teacher in UP handles a classroom of 30-40 kids, teaches 2-3 subjects depending on posting, does midday meal duty, maintains attendance and academic records, and often gets pulled into election duty, census work or government surveys. It's not a soft job. Rural postings are common in the first few years, and government schools in UP can be short-staffed, so one teacher often ends up covering more than one subject or even more than one class.
The pay is stable, the job is permanent, and pension and other government benefits apply. That's why lakhs of candidates chase this every year even though the actual teaching job comes only after a separate recruitment exam.
Vacancy details
UPTET itself has no vacancy number attached to it. It is only an eligibility test, similar to CTET at the national level. Once you clear UPTET, you become eligible to apply when UP announces an actual teacher recruitment drive (for example, past recruitment cycles under Basic Shiksha Parishad or Super TET for upper primary posts).
Recruitment vacancy numbers vary hugely by year and depend on how many posts are vacant in government schools across UP's 75 districts. Don't confuse the number of UPTET registrations (nearly 20 lakh this year) with job vacancies. Most candidates appearing for UPTET are simply keeping their eligibility live and current, since a huge chunk of that pool will not get an actual teaching job in the same year.
Eligibility
Age limit
There is no strict age bar to sit for UPTET itself in most cycles — many candidates appear purely to get or renew their eligibility certificate, and TET certificates are valid for life. Actual age limits get applied later, at the recruitment stage, when a specific teacher vacancy is announced.
| Category | Typical age relaxation at recruitment stage |
|---|---|
| General (UP domicile) | Base limit as per recruitment notification, usually 18-40 |
| OBC | +3 to 5 years |
| SC/ST | +5 years |
| PwD | +10 to 15 years |
| Women (UP domicile) | +5 years in several UP recruitment drives |
Always check the specific recruitment notification for exact age criteria, since UPTET itself is not age-restricted the way a direct recruitment exam is.
Education
For Paper 1 (Classes 1-5), you need any one of these:
- Senior Secondary + 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed)
- Senior Secondary + 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed)
- Graduation + 2-year D.El.Ed
- Graduation + 1-year B.Ed (with conditions as per NCTE norms)
For Paper 2 (Classes 6-8), you need any one of these:
- Graduation + 2-year D.El.Ed
- Graduation + 1-year B.Ed
- Senior Secondary + 4-year B.El.Ed
- Graduation with at least 50% marks + B.Ed
You can appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 in the same attempt if you meet both sets of qualifications and want to keep options open for both class levels.
Domicile
UPTET is open to candidates from anywhere in India, not just UP residents. But when actual teacher recruitment happens, UP domicile candidates usually get a horizontal reservation benefit, so out-of-state candidates should check the specific recruitment rules separately.
Application process and fee
The whole process is online through the official UPESSC/UPTET portal. A One Time Registration (OTR) is now compulsory before you can fill the application form, so complete that step first if you're new to UP's exam ecosystem.
| Category | Fee (per paper, latest cycle) |
|---|---|
| General/OBC/EWS | ₹1,000 |
| SC/ST | ₹500 |
| PwD (Divyang) | ₹300 |
If you apply for both Paper 1 and Paper 2, the fee is charged separately for each paper, so budget for both if you're going for double eligibility.
Steps to apply:
- Complete One Time Registration (OTR) on the official portal.
- Log in and fill the UPTET application form with personal and academic details.
- Upload photo, signature and required certificates.
- Choose Paper 1, Paper 2, or both.
- Pay the fee online.
- Download and save the confirmation page for your records.
Don't wait for the last date to apply. UP's servers slow down badly in the final 2-3 days because of the sheer volume of applicants (we're talking about lakhs of forms in a single week).
Exam pattern
Both papers follow the same format: objective type, no negative marking, offline pen-and-paper mode (OMR based).
| Paper | Subjects | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Class 1-5) | Child Development & Pedagogy, Language 1 (Hindi), Language 2, Mathematics, Environmental Studies | 150 | 150 | 2.5 hours |
| Paper 2 (Class 6-8) | Child Development & Pedagogy, Language 1 (Hindi), Language 2, Mathematics & Science OR Social Studies | 150 | 150 | 2.5 hours |
Each subject in Paper 1 carries 30 questions. In Paper 2, the elective section (Maths-Science or Social Studies) carries 60 questions on its own, so pick your elective based on your actual strength, not what your friends are doing.
Since there's no negative marking, attempt every question. Leaving blanks in a no-negative-marking exam is just leaving free marks on the table.

Salary, pay scale and career growth
UPTET itself pays nothing, it's an eligibility exam. Once you clear it and get selected as an Assistant Teacher through the actual recruitment process, the pay structure roughly looks like this (based on recent UP teacher recruitment pay scales):
- Pay Level: Level 7 (7th Pay Commission), pay band approximately ₹44,900 to ₹1,42,400
- Gross monthly salary (with DA, HRA, TA): roughly ₹55,000 to ₹65,000 depending on posting location
- In-hand after standard deductions: roughly ₹48,000 to ₹58,000
On top of basic pay, you get dearness allowance, house rent allowance (varies by city classification), and transport allowance. Over the years, increments and periodic pay commission revisions push this up. Career progression usually moves from Assistant Teacher to Head Teacher/Principal roles with seniority and further departmental exams, and some teachers later move into administrative or supervisory education department roles.
Government job security, pension benefits under the applicable scheme, and long medical leave rules make this an attractive option even though the starting pay isn't the highest compared to some private sector roles.
Previous cut-off (qualifying marks)
UPTET doesn't work on a category-wise merit cut-off in the way a recruitment exam does. It has a flat qualifying percentage you need to cross to be declared "TET Qualified."
| Category | Qualifying percentage | Marks out of 150 |
|---|---|---|
| General/EWS | 60% | 90 |
| OBC/SC/ST/PwD/Ex-servicemen | 55% | 82-83 |
This qualifying mark has stayed roughly the same across recent cycles. Crossing it gets you the TET certificate for life, it doesn't expire and doesn't need renewal, though you'll still need to clear a separate recruitment exam to actually get a teaching job.
Best books and preparation strategy
You don't need twenty different books for this. Stick to a focused set and revise multiple times instead of buying more material.
- Child Development and Pedagogy: Arihant or Disha publication books built specifically for CTET/TET pattern
- Mathematics and Science pedagogy: NCERT textbooks of classes 6-8 are still the base, supplemented by a TET-specific pedagogy book
- Hindi and English language: any standard TET language section book with grammar and pedagogy combined
- EVS/Social Studies: NCERT class 3-8 books cover almost everything asked
A rough month-wise plan if you have 3-4 months:
Month 1: Cover Child Development and Pedagogy fully, and start basic Maths/EVS NCERT reading in parallel.
Month 2: Finish Mathematics and Science/Social Studies syllabus, keep doing daily language practice (10-15 minutes of grammar drilling).
Month 3: Start full-length mock tests, at least 2-3 per week, and note down weak areas from each attempt.
Final 2-3 weeks: Only revision and mocks, no new topics. Focus on speed and accuracy since 150 questions in 150 minutes means one minute per question with barely any room to think twice.
Use free mock tests to simulate the real exam pressure, and go through topic-wise practice sets once you've finished a chapter so the concept sticks. If you're weak in maths reasoning, our quantitative aptitude guide and reasoning guide break things down step by step. For the general awareness portion that shows up in the Social Studies elective, check the general awareness guide. The free books section also has NCERT-aligned material you can read without spending on physical copies.
Common mistakes and honest advice
A lot of candidates treat UPTET like a formality and don't take the pedagogy section seriously. That's a mistake. Child Development and Pedagogy is 30 out of 150 marks and it's actually one of the easier sections to score well in if you read the theory carefully instead of skimming it.
Another common error: ignoring the language pedagogy portion inside Hindi and English sections. Students focus only on grammar and comprehension and lose easy marks on pedagogy-based questions.
Don't leave your elective choice (Maths-Science vs Social Studies) for Paper 2 till the last week. Decide early based on your actual comfort, not what scores "easier" for other people, because comfort with the subject matters more than any rumour about which section is easier.
And please, build a proper study plan instead of randomly jumping between subjects. Structured revision beats last-minute cramming almost every single time in an exam this syllabus-heavy.

Final word
UPTET is not the hardest exam out there, but it's the one exam almost every future UP government teacher has to clear at least once. Treat it seriously, don't skip pedagogy theory, and don't waste your first attempt by under-preparing just because it's "only an eligibility test." Once you have that TET certificate in hand, it stays with you for life, and that's one less thing to worry about when the real recruitment drive opens up. Start with a syllabus checklist, pick up a couple of good books, and get moving today rather than waiting for the "perfect" starting date.
