09 | Ports: category, position and cargo

Visakhapatnam is Andhra Pradesh's major port under the central major-port framework. Gangavaram, Krishnapatnam, Kakinada Deep Water and the other state-notified sites are non-major ports. 'Major' is a legal and administrative category; it does not simply mean 'handles more cargo'. An operating non-major port can handle substantial traffic. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reported 15 non-major port locations alongside Visakhapatnam in its 2024-25 sector update.

For geography, learn the coast from north to south. Kalingapatnam and Bhavanapadu or Mulapeta belong to the north-coast discussion; Visakhapatnam and Gangavaram cluster around the Visakhapatnam coast; Kakinada serves the Godavari-side coast; Machilipatnam faces the Krishna coast; Nizampatnam and Vadarevu lie farther south; Ramayapatnam and Krishnapatnam serve the southern coast. Location and project status should be kept separate. A notified or under-construction port is not automatically a cargo-handling port.

The 2024-25 official statistics report that AP's non-major port cargo was concentrated in Krishnapatnam, Gangavaram, Kakinada Deep Water, Kakinada Anchorage and Rawa. That is a dated operational statement, not a fixed list of every port that will operate in future. Kakinada Anchorage and Kakinada Deep Water are related geographically but distinct facilities in statistics. Rawa is linked to offshore hydrocarbon activity. Cargo mix includes coal, iron ore, fertiliser inputs and other goods; rankings can change by year.

The 'port question' often asks one of three things: legal class, geographic order or actual cargo handling. Identify which one before answering. Do not infer major-port status from a deep-water label or a corporate name.

Worked map reasoning

Given Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram and Krishnapatnam, separate three questions. Which has major-port legal status? Visakhapatnam. Which locations are on the southern AP coast? Krishnapatnam, relative to the other two. Which handles more cargo in a given year? That requires a dated official table. One geographic map cannot prove an annual cargo rank, and the word 'deep-water' cannot establish legal category.

Active recall: close the book, place the named river or region on a blank map, and explain one likely exam confusion in your own words.
