The Godavari rises near Trimbakeshwar in Maharashtra's Western Ghats and flows east across the Deccan before entering Andhra Pradesh. It is often called the largest peninsular river. Within AP, the river crosses a narrow scenic hill reach near the Papikondalu area and then opens into a broad lowland. At Dowleswaram near Rajamahendravaram, Sir Arthur Cotton's barrage system diverts water into the delta canal network. The historic anicut and present barrage must be understood as stages of the same delta-irrigation tradition, not as a high storage dam.
Near the coast the Godavari divides into distributaries, notably Gautami and Vasishta. Branch names and island locations are easier to learn by tracing the river downstream: upper river, hill gap, Rajamahendravaram, barrage, distributaries, Bay. Konaseema is the low-lying delta landscape south of the main channel system. Its coconut groves, fisheries and paddy cultivation reflect water and soil conditions. A distributary is a branch leaving the main channel; a tributary joins it. This distinction alone resolves several MCQs.
Polavaram is a multipurpose project on the Godavari upstream of the delta. Its irrigation, drinking and industrial supply, hydropower and diversion to the Krishna basin are distinct components. Section 90 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 declared it a national project. That status does not mean every project component has the same financier or that all physical works are complete. The Union's commitment described in official material concerns the remaining irrigation component under specified terms; state agencies execute works and rehabilitation remains a material issue.
Godavari questions often test scale and position: the river starts outside AP, reaches the Bay inside AP, supports a major delta, and has a project upstream of the Cotton barrage. Some older references place project sites in a former West Godavari or East Godavari district because the administrative map changed. Prefer river and site over an undated parent-district label.
Worked map reasoning
Trace the Godavari downstream with five marks: entry into AP, Papikondalu reach, Polavaram, Dowleswaram, and the branching delta. If an item calls Polavaram a delta barrage, the sequence reveals the problem: it is upstream of the delta diversion system. If it calls Gautami a tributary, the arrow direction reveals the problem: Gautami branches away from the lower main river.
Active recall: close the book, place the named river or region on a blank map, and explain one likely exam confusion in your own words.
