Turn a paragraph into a table
A caselet states numerical data in sentences rather than a chart. Extract entities, categories and time periods into a compact table before solving questions. Underline words such as “remaining”, “of these” and “compared with last year” because they define the base. If a passage says 300 students registered, 60% appeared and 40% of those who appeared passed, the pass count is 300×0.60×0.40=72. Multiplying 300 by 40% alone incorrectly treats registered students as the base of the pass percentage.
Distinguish totals and subgroups
When a passage lists overlapping groups, do not add them as if disjoint. If it states boys and girls, those may form a complete partition; if it states students who play cricket and students who play football, some may play both. Translate “only”, “both”, “at least one” and “neither” into a small Venn or two-way table. A missing subgroup can often be found by subtracting known disjoint parts from a total.
Solve from the data, not the story
The narrative may mention a school, factory or shop, but the calculation depends on the stated values. Keep names as labels and do not import assumptions about real institutions. For each practice question, identify the exact sentence containing the value, state the operation and check the unit. Short source solutions in this draft inventory must be expanded before the final book so candidates can see which sentence and base were used.
Three populations in a selection caselet
Suppose Centre A registered 300 candidates, 270 appeared and 180 qualified. There are 30 absentees: registered minus appeared. There are 90 who appeared but did not qualify: appeared minus qualified. There are 120 registered candidates who did not qualify, but that last group includes both absentees and unsuccessful attendees. Do not use the same subtraction for all three wordings. The population named in the question determines which total is the starting point.
If the question asks the qualification rate among those who appeared, calculate 180/270=66.7% approximately. If it asks the rate among those registered, calculate 180/300=60%. These are both legitimate rates and neither substitutes for the other. Put the phrase “among appeared” or “among registered” directly under the fraction bar. This habit prevents the most common caselet error: a correct numerator with the wrong denominator.
Build a compact four-centre table
For each centre, make three columns: R, A and Q. Check the logical order 0≤Q≤A≤R before calculating. If a passage seems to violate that order, reread the labels; it may be discussing a different period or category. To find total appeared, add the A column only. To find total qualified, add Q only. To find which centre had the most qualified, compare Q values rather than qualification rates. A small centre can have the highest rate but a lower absolute count.
Translate prose precisely
Words such as “of those who appeared” create nested bases. If 80% of registered candidates appeared and 60% of those appearing qualified, the qualified share of registered candidates is 0.80×0.60=0.48, or 48%. Do not add the two percentages. When a passage gives actual counts instead, derive rates from the counts only after identifying the population. For each practice item, locate the three figures in its own caselet and write one equation. The same types of calculation recur, but the data and the relevant centre change from item to item.
