Sarnath named India's 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site

VARANASI, July 25 — The ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, has been formally inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the announcement coming during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Busan, South Korea.

Sarnath is where Gautama Buddha is believed to have delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, and the site is home to the Dhamek Stupa, the remains of ancient monasteries, and the Ashokan pillar whose lion capital was later adopted as India's national emblem. With this listing, Sarnath becomes India's 45th entry on the World Heritage List and adds to a small group of Buddhist sites recognised globally for their religious and archaeological significance.

Union Culture Ministry officials called the recognition a boost to heritage tourism in the region, and state authorities are expected to step up conservation and visitor-management work around the stupa complex and the adjoining archaeological museum. The listing follows years of documentation and advocacy by the Archaeological Survey of India, which maintains the protected site.

For general awareness preparation, this is a high-probability question: candidates should note Sarnath's associated ruler (Ashoka), its Buddhist significance (first sermon/Dhammachakra Pravartana), and India's current total tally of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
