Correct answer: (A) Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct one

The correct answer is option-1(i.e- Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct one). The new act namely the Government of India Act, 1858 was passed on 2 nd August 1858 for better governance in India. Hence A is correct. This act was enacted to make the government more responsible. Hence R is correct. In this act, the rule of the Company was replaced by the rule of the Crown in India and thus, it transferred government territories and revenues of India from East India Company to the British Crown. The assumption of the government was declared by Lord Canning in a Durbar at Kolkata and the powers of the British Crown were to be exercised by the new office of the Secretary of state for India.
