In an examination, 60% of the candidates passed in Hindi, 45% passed in English, and 15% failed in both subjects. If 300 candidates passed in both subjects, find the total number of candidates who appeared.

Correct answer: (B) 1500
Let total candidates = 100%. %(pass both) = %(pass Hindi) + %(pass English) - %(pass at least one) = 60 + 45 - (100 - 15) = 105 - 85 = 20%. So 20% of total = 300 => total = 300/0.20 = 1500.
