Correct answer: (B) The captain ordered the soldiers not to fire until he gave them the signal

The correct answer is option 2). To change the sentence from direct to indirect narration, we need to make the following changes: We make changes in the tense of reported speech only if the reporting verb is in the past tense. Here reporting verb, i.e. ‘said’ is in the past tense; therefore, tense of reported speech will be changed. Given sentence is an example of an imperative sentence , and it is a command. The verb in the reporting verb, i.e. "said" will be changed to "ordered". "Not to" is used in place of inverted commas. First-person "I" i n the reported speech will be changed to the subject of the Reporting verb, in this case, will be changed to "he". Therefore, the correct sentence is “The captain ordered the soldiers not to fire until he gave them the signal”.
