SSC CPO practice question
The temperatures (in °C) recorded in 5 cities on a winter day — four of the five values are 11, 15, 19, 23, and it is known that this fifth value is the SMALLEST of the five values. The mean of all five values is 14, and the mean deviation about the mean of all five values is 6. Find the fifth (missing) value.

Correct answer: (D) 2 °C
Sum of absolute deviations of all 5 values from the mean = mean deviation × n = 6 × 5 = 30. Absolute deviations of the four known values: |11-14|=3, |15-14|=1, |19-14|=5, |23-14|=9, summing to 18. So |x - mean| = 30 - 18 = 12. Since the missing value is the smallest, it must be less than the mean, so x = mean - 12 = 2 °C.
