The APPSC Assistant Statistical Officer examination (brief Notification No. 20/2026) is a single-level online test of two papers, 150 marks each, with one-third negative marking. The plan below is ours; the facts it rests on are the notification's. The syllabus is on the syllabus page, the scheme on the exam pattern page, and the recruitment overview on the ASO exam guide.

The one decision that matters

With 150 marks on one subject, Statistics decides the merit list. General Studies candidates across every APPSC post score in a narrow band; the subject paper is where the spread is. So spend most of your time on Paper II and keep General Studies at a steady daily pace, enough that Paper I is not given away.

Step 1: the annexure before the books

Download the Notification 20/2026 PDF from psc.ap.gov.in and print the syllabus annexure. Rate yourself on every line of Paper II: known, half-known, new. The likely core is degree-level statistics (probability, distributions, estimation, testing of hypotheses, sampling, index numbers and official statistics), but the annexure, not any summary, sets the list. If you entered through the Mathematics or Economics route, the new lines will be more numerous; plan for them first.

Step 2: a weekly shape

Our suggestion for a candidate who can study about four hours a day:

Block Daily time What
Paper II About half One annexure line at a time: definitions, then formulas, then timed numericals
Paper I About a third A rotating head each day: polity, history, geography, economy, science, environment, current affairs
Reasoning and data analysis The rest Short daily sets; the data-analysis head of Paper I doubles as Paper II revision

Review the rating sheet every Sunday and move the weakest line to Monday.

Step 3: timed sets from the first month

Each paper is 150 questions in 150 minutes, one minute per question. Numerical questions in Paper II take longer, so the time has to be won on the definitional ones. From the first month, do at least one timed sitting of each paper a fortnight; from the day APPSC announces the exam date, make it one a week. Score the two papers separately and keep a log of wrong answers by syllabus line. Full mocks and topic practice on Pareeksha are Pro; the 10-question mini-mock and Daily Dangal are free.

Step 4: mind the one-third

Arithmetic from the scheme: a wrong answer costs one-third of a mark, so three wrong cancel one right, and a blank costs nothing. The working rule we suggest: attempt when you can rule out two options; leave it when you cannot. Practise this discipline in every timed set, because under exam pressure the instinct is to attempt everything.

Step 5: the paperwork

Update your OTPR on psc.ap.gov.in before applying, because district and local status now follow the Andhra Pradesh Presidential Order, 2025, and these details flow from OTPR into the application. Read the detailed notification for fee, age and the vacancy break-up before you pay; the brief notification does not state them and neither does this page. The window is 13 October to 2 November 2026.

What this page does not have

  • Fee, age limits, the vacancy break-up and the exam date; they are not in the brief notification.
  • A unit-wise mark weighting; the notification gives none.
  • Any cut-off to aim at; see the cut-off page for why.

Frequently asked questions

How should I split time between the two ASO papers?

Our advice: give Paper II Statistics the larger share, because it is the paper that separates candidates, and keep General Studies at a steady daily pace so the 150 marks of Paper I are not given away.

How long do I have to prepare?

The application window is 13 October to 2 November 2026 and the exam date is not announced as on 11 October 2026, so plan in weekly blocks and tighten the schedule when APPSC publishes the date.

Should I attempt every question?

Attempt a question when you can eliminate at least two options; the one-third penalty means three wrong answers cancel one right one, so blind guesses lose marks on average.

What must I do before applying?

Update your OTPR on psc.ap.gov.in, because district and local status now follow the Andhra Pradesh Presidential Order, 2025, and read the detailed notification before paying the fee.
