A personalities question looks like a pure memory test, yet most wrong answers come from mixing up honorifics, swapping a person with a work, or ignoring which period the question is about. A name such as Prakasam can lead you to a district, a title, a protest and an office, and only one of them is being asked. The candidates who score well on this topic are not the ones who memorise the most names. They are the ones who attach a small, fixed set of facts to each name and refuse to let two people share the same fact.
This page is a revision sheet built around that idea. It condenses the book AP Personalities: Freedom Fighters, Poets and Reformers and connects to the Andhra Pradesh hub and the planning overview in Andhra Pradesh Government Exams 2026. It does not retell the full story of the movements. For the narrative of risings, reform and the national movement in Andhra, read Freedom Struggle and Social Reform in Andhra. For the long literary tradition from Nannaya onwards, read Telugu Language and Literature: Kavitrayam to the Modern Era. Here the focus is the person: dates, titles, works, awards and the traps that go with them.
A note on the district map. Andhra Pradesh has 28 districts as on October 2026 according to the state's administrative notifications, so check the latest notification before an exam. A person's life, however, was lived under older maps: the Madras Presidency, the Telugu-speaking districts of the Godavari and Krishna deltas, and the Nizam's Hyderabad State. A district named after someone is a memorial label, not proof that every event of that life took place there.
1. A four-column method for every person
For each person, write four things on a card: the primary association, the work or event, the regional setting, and one caution. The caution column is the one that saves marks. A poet may have lived in what is now Telangana, a fighter may have operated across an Agency area rather than in one district, and a place name may be a later commemoration.
Here is a worked example with Gurajada Apparao. Association: modern Telugu literature and social criticism. Work: the play Kanyasulkam, first published in 1892 according to the sources checked for this page. Setting: the Vizianagaram court-and-town world of the north coast. Caution: the patriotic song "Desamunu Preminchumanna" is also his and is dated 1910 in the sources, so a question that says "poet of the song on love for the country" and a question that says "author of the play on bride-price" point to the same man through different works. Learn both pairs, not one.
Keep four date layers apart at all times: 1947 independence, 1953 Andhra State, 1956 Andhra Pradesh, 2014 bifurcation. Many person questions are really date-layer questions in disguise.
2. Freedom fighters and political figures
| Person | Dates | Association | Setting or clue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alluri Sitarama Raju | 1897 (some sources say 1898) to 1924 | Rampa rebellion 1922-24; honorific Manyam Veerudu | Forested Agency hills of the northeast |
| Tanguturi Prakasam | 1872 to 1957 | Andhra Kesari; Simon Commission protest, Madras, 1928; first Chief Minister of Andhra State | Ongole and the Prakasam region |
| Potti Sriramulu | 1901 to 1952 | Fast for a separate Andhra, ended by his death on 15 December 1952; honorific Amarajeevi | Nellore region, later Madras |
| Pingali Venkayya | 1876 (one source says 1878) to 1963 | Flag design work; showed a design to Gandhi at Vijayawada, 1921 | Krishna region |
| Duggirala Gopalakrishnayya | 1889 to 1928 | Andhra Ratna; Chirala-Perala movement, 1921 | Central coast |
| Gadicherla Harisarvottama Rao | 1883 to 1960 | Journalist and nationalist; weekly Swarajya, 1908 | Rajahmundry |
| Durgabai Deshmukh | 1909 to 1981 | Salt Satyagraha, lawyer, Constituent Assembly member; Padma Vibhushan, 1975 | Born Rajahmundry |
| Ponaka Kanakamma | 1892 to 1963 | Pinakini Satyagraha Ashram near Nellore; Kasturidevi Vidyalayam | Nellore |
| Nyapati Subba Rao Pantulu | 1856 to 1941 | Honorific Andhra Bhishma; Congress general secretary 1914-17 | Rajahmundry and Guntur-Nellore politics |
| Bhogaraju Pattabhi Sitaramayya | 1880 to 1959 | Congress president 1948-49; founder of Andhra Bank, 1923; author of a history of the Congress | Machilipatnam |
| Kasinadhuni Nageswara Rao | 1867 to 1938 | Amrutanjan founder, 1893; Andhra Patrika, 1909; honorific Desoddharaka | Madras and Krishna region |
These dates come from standard biographical references and were cross-checked. Where sources differ by a year, the cell says so. An exam will normally ask only the settled facts, so learn the year that your syllabus book prints and treat the rest as background.
Methods differ, and the exam uses that
Alluri's rebellion was armed, forest-based and tribal-led. Chirala-Perala in 1921 was a civic protest: residents of the twin towns moved out to a camp at a new settlement they called Ramanagar for several months in opposition to a municipal arrangement, a form of mass non-cooperation, not an armed act. The Salt Satyagraha of 1930 was civil disobedience of a central law. The Simon Commission protest of 1928 was a street confrontation in Madras city. If a question lists "Alluri, Duggirala, Prakasam" and asks who used armed resistance, the answer is not a matter of fame but of method.
Two figures who are often confused
Pingali Venkayya is remembered for the flag, yet the present national flag was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 22 July 1947, with the wheel in place of the spinning wheel. His designs were precursors that fed a long process. The phrase "designed the national flag" is therefore an overclaim; "worked on flag designs and showed one to Gandhi in 1921" is safe.
Tanguturi Prakasam held several offices at different times. He was Premier of the Madras Presidency from April 1946 to March 1947, and Chief Minister of Andhra State from 1 October 1953 to 15 November 1954. A question that says "first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh" is a trap, because the 1956 state's first Chief Minister was a different person. Read the state name and year in every such question.
3. Writers and reformers
| Person | Dates | Key link |
|---|---|---|
| Kandukuri Veeresalingam | 1848 to 1919 | First widow remarriage in the Telugu country, 11 December 1881; journal Vivekavardhini, 1876; novel Rajasekhara Charitamu, 1880 |
| Gurajada Apparao | 1862 to 1915 | Kanyasulkam; "Desamunu Preminchumanna"; Mutyala Saralu |
| Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy | 1863 to 1940 | Spoken-language (vyavaharika) movement; Telugu Language Day on 29 August marks his birthday |
| Gurram Jashuva | 1895 to 1971 | Gabbilam, 1941; Sahitya Akademi Award 1964; Padma Bhushan 1970 |
| Sri Sri | 1910 to 1983 | Mahaprasthanam; Sahitya Akademi Award 1972 for Sri Sri Sahityamu |
| Viswanatha Satyanarayana | 1895 to 1976 | Ramayana Kalpavrikshamu; Jnanpith Award 1970 |
| C. Narayana Reddy | 1931 to 2017 | Viswambhara; Jnanpith Award 1988; born in present-day Telangana |
Veeresalingam is the reformer to learn in detail: widow remarriage, women's education, journalism, and reading rooms. Gidugu is the language reformer: he argued for writing in the living spoken register, and his birth date is the reason Telugu Language Day falls on 29 August. Jashuva is the poet-voice against caste exclusion. Sri Sri belongs to the modern, socially driven poetry of the mid-twentieth century.
Awards: read the official lists, not memory
Awards give clean, checkable facts. The Jnanpith Trust lists three Telugu laureates: Viswanatha Satyanarayana (1970), C. Narayana Reddy (1988) and Ravuri Bharadwaja (2012). A question about the first Telugu Jnanpith winner has one answer; a question that says "Telugu Jnanpith winners" has three.
The Sahitya Akademi list shows that the first Telugu Akademi Award went to Suravaram Pratapa Reddy in 1955 for Andhrula Sanghika Charitramu, a social history. Viswanatha Satyanarayana received the Akademi Award in 1962 for Viswanadha Madhyakkaralu and the Akademi Fellowship in 1970. Jashuva received the Akademi Award in 1964 for Kreestu Charitra. Sri Sri received it in 1972 for Sri Sri Sahityamu. Many students assume Sri Sri's Akademi award was for Khadga Srishti, which was published in 1966; the official list names Sri Sri Sahityamu, so use that. Padma awards are civilian honours from the Home Ministry, not literary awards, and their years should be checked on the Padma Awards portal before an exam. For the persons above, standard award lists give Jashuva a Padma Bhushan in 1970, C. Narayana Reddy a Padma Bhushan in 1992, Durgabai Deshmukh a Padma Vibhushan in 1975 and Ghantasala a Padma Shri in 1970.
4. Classical and devotional poets
- Kavi Trayam: Nannaya (Adikavi, eleventh century, linked with the court at Rajamahendravaram and the patron Rajaraja Narendra), Tikkana (thirteenth century, linked with Nellore and a minister's role at court) and Errana (fourteenth century, who completed the portion Nannaya left unfinished). They worked in different centuries, so the trio is a tradition, not a team.
- Potana: author of the Telugu Bhagavatam, fifteenth century. His birthplace is argued between Bammera, now in Telangana, and Ontimitta, now in AP, so a question that depends on this should give its own context.
- Srinatha: courtly poet, associated with the Srungara Naishadham and Kasikhandamu; not one of the Kavi Trayam.
- Yogi Vemana: short, direct verses on social conduct. His dates are uncertain in popular accounts, so avoid memorising a year.
- Annamacharya: 1408 to 1503 by the commonly cited dates; about 32,000 sankirtanas are credited to him, of which roughly 12,000 survive on copper plates at Tirumala; honorific Padakavita Pitamaha.
- Kshetrayya: padams, lyrics widely used in music and dance; associated with Movva.
- Tenali Ramakrishna: popularly linked with the court of Krishnadevaraya; many stories are later folklore, so avoid dates.
The Ministry of Culture notified Telugu as a classical language on 31 October 2008, on the same day as Kannada. This is a language-status fact, not a person fact, and is often asked alongside Nannaya.
5. The timeline box
| Year | Event |
|---|---|
| 1947 | Independence |
| 19 Oct 1952 | Potti Sriramulu begins his fast |
| 15 Dec 1952 | Death of Potti Sriramulu |
| 1 Oct 1953 | Andhra State formed; Prakasam its first Chief Minister |
| 1 Nov 1956 | Andhra Pradesh formed |
| 2014 | Bifurcation |
The 1952 fast is the catalyst for the 1953 state. The full story of how the demand grew belongs to Formation History: Andhra Movement to 1956 and 2014; this page only needs the date anchors for person questions.
6. Reading the map without overclaiming
The book's association map places Alluri's struggle in the northeast hills; Gurajada and Gidugu in the Vizianagaram and Srikakulam language-cultural region; Veeresalingam and Durgabai in the Godavari-Rajahmundry area; Pingali and Duggirala in the Krishna and central coastal belt; Prakasam near Ongole; and Potti Sriramulu and Tikkana toward Nellore. These are study anchors, not proof of every birth site. Chirala and Perala appear in older sources under Guntur but belong to the Prakasam region today, so a question that says "then Guntur" is not wrong; it asks for historical geography.
Three regional routes help recall. In the northeast and Godavari belt, run from Alluri's forest struggle through Vizianagaram to Rajahmundry. In the Krishna, Prakasam and Nellore belt, run from Vijayawada to Chirala, Ongole and Nellore. In the south, link Vemana's inland memory and Annamacharya's Tirumala songs. Attach exactly one person-event pair to each stop, and never merge a medieval poet with a twentieth-century protest because they share a region on the map.
7. Women in the movement and source quality
Durgabai Deshmukh has the strongest documentation. She took part in the Salt Satyagraha, qualified as a lawyer, founded the Andhra Mahila Sabha in Madras (the year is given as 1937 in one source and 1938 in another, so learn it only if your book prints one), became the first chairperson of the Central Social Welfare Board in 1953, and sat in the Constituent Assembly. Ponaka Kanakamma, associated with the Pinakini Satyagraha Ashram that Gandhi inaugurated in April 1921 and with a girls' school at Nellore, shows how women combined constructive work with political action.
Source quality shapes how you answer. If a source states only the association, do not invent the date. If two sources differ on a birth year by one, the examiner is unlikely to ask for it. Short quotations attached to writers vary in wording across books, so learn the author-and-work pair, not a loose line.
8. Three worked examples of reasoning
Example 1: "The leader of the 1928 Simon Commission protest at Madras who later became chief minister". The 1928 protest points to Prakasam. The chief ministership is where the trap lies: Andhra State in 1953, not the later state. The honorific Andhra Kesari confirms it.
Example 2: "The reformer who conducted the first widow remarriage on 11 December 1881". The year and the act point to Veeresalingam. If the options also include Gurajada, remember that Gurajada was a writer of the same era and region but his famous work attacked bride-price in marriage, not widow remarriage as a reform campaign.
Example 3: "The poet whose Telugu Jnanpith came in 1970". Only one name fits: Viswanatha Satyanarayana, for Ramayana Kalpavrikshamu. If the question says 1988, the answer is C. Narayana Reddy for Viswambhara. If it says 2012, the answer is Ravuri Bharadwaja. Three years, three names.
9. How the same fact appears in different question shapes
Examiners rarely repeat a fact in the same words. The Rampa rebellion can appear as "the 1922-24 tribal uprising in the Godavari Agency", as "the movement associated with the title Manyam Veerudu", as "the rebellion whose leader was captured in the Chintapalli forests and executed in May 1924", or as a matching exercise. The safe response is to store the fact as a small cluster: Alluri, 1922-24, Agency hills, armed, Manyam Veerudu, executed 7 May 1924. Whichever hook is offered, one of the cluster elements will fire the memory.
The same method applies to Prakasam: Andhra Kesari, 1928 Madras, Andhra State 1953, Premier 1946-47. And to Potti Sriramulu: Amarajeevi, fast from 19 October 1952, death 15 December 1952. Spend five minutes writing three such clusters from memory and compare with the tables above. That small exercise exposes the gaps faster than rereading.
10. Look-alike pairs and how to separate them
Most lost marks come from pairs that sit close together in a textbook. A few tests help.
Reformer or writer. Veeresalingam and Gurajada lived in overlapping decades in the Godavari and north-coast belt. Veeresalingam is the activist: widow remarriage, the journal Vivekavardhini (1876), schools and reading rooms. Gurajada is the author who held up a mirror: Kanyasulkam, the song on love for the country, the Mutyala Saralu metre. If the question uses a verb of action such as "conducted" or "founded", think Veeresalingam; if it uses "wrote" or "composed", think Gurajada first.
Journal founders. Four journals are worth pairing with their founders: Vivekavardhini with Veeresalingam (1876), Krishna Patrika with Konda Venkatappayya (1902), Swarajya with Gadicherla Harisarvottama Rao (1908) and Andhra Patrika with Kasinadhuni Nageswara Rao (1909, as a weekly; it became a daily later from Madras). Nyapati Subba Rao is often wrongly credited with Andhra Patrika; he is the Andhra Bhishma, a Congress organiser and an Andhra Mahasabha figure. Keep the two Andhra Patrika and Andhra Bhishma associations apart.
Which award, for which man. Viswanatha Satyanarayana holds the Sahitya Akademi Award (1962), the Fellowship (1970) and the Jnanpith (1970). Jashuva holds the Akademi Award (1964) and a Padma Bhushan, but no Jnanpith. Sri Sri holds an Akademi Award (1972). C. Narayana Reddy holds the Jnanpith (1988) and the Akademi Fellowship (2014). If an option says "Jashuva, Jnanpith", it is wrong even though he is a major poet.
The three Andhra faces of 1952 to 1953. Potti Sriramulu is the fast and the death; Prakasam is the first Chief Minister of the new state; the announcement of the new state followed days after the death. Do not let any one of them take the other's act.
Classical trio versus classical poets. Nannaya, Tikkana and Errana complete the Mahabharata in Telugu across centuries. Potana, Srinatha and Annamacharya are great poets who are not in that trio. A question that says "Kavi Trayam" has only three correct names.
11. A step-by-step method for answering a person question
- Underline the hook. Find the single most specific word in the question: a year, an office, a work title, a place or a verb of action.
- Name the layer. Decide whether the question is about a date layer (1947, 1953, 1956, 2014), a method (armed, civic, salt law), a work, an award or a honorific.
- Eliminate by category. If the hook is a work title, remove every option who is not an author. If the hook is an office, remove every option who never held office.
- Check the caution column. Ask whether the question could be a trap: a state name missing its year, a memorial district, an overclaimed first.
- Pick the answer that fits every word. If two options still fit, one of them usually fails on the verb or the year.
Try it on this practice item: "Who founded the journal Vivekavardhini in 1876?" The hook is the journal title and the year. The layer is a founder question. Eliminating by category leaves reformers and journalists; Veeresalingam is the only name in this guide tied to that title and year.
12. Twelve one-line recall prompts
Cover the right-hand side of the tables and test yourself: the honorific of Alluri; the year of Chirala-Perala; the work of Jashuva that has a bat in the title; the poet of the Telugu Jnanpith in 1988; the date of Potti Sriramulu's death; the writer for whom Telugu Language Day is observed; the third poet of the trio; the founder of Andhra Bank; the woman who chaired the Central Social Welfare Board first; the date of the first widow remarriage; the date the present flag was adopted; the language-status date for Telugu. If you can answer ten without looking, move on to a timed set. If fewer, return to the table where you slipped.
Common exam traps
- Honorific swap: Andhra Kesari is Prakasam, Andhra Ratna is Duggirala, Andhra Bhishma is Nyapati, Amarajeevi is Potti Sriramulu.
- Work swap: Kanyasulkam (Gurajada), Mahaprasthanam (Sri Sri), Gabbilam (Jashuva), Ramayana Kalpavrikshamu (Viswanatha Satyanarayana), Viswambhara (C. Narayana Reddy).
- Date-layer swap: "First Chief Minister" needs the state name and year; 1953 Andhra State is not 1956 Andhra Pradesh.
- Memorial district fallacy: Alluri Sitarama Raju, Prakasam, Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore and Annamayya districts carry names; the events were not confined to them.
- Single-hero language: the Rampa rebellion involved many local people; Pingali did not alone adopt today's flag.
- Method confusion: armed forest rebellion versus municipal non-cooperation versus salt law defiance.
- Award confusion: Jnanpith and Sahitya Akademi are literary; Padma awards are civilian honours.
- Unsupported firsts: be wary of "first woman" or "first poet" claims that need a defined category.
Key facts for the exam
- Alluri Sitarama Raju: Rampa rebellion 1922-24; honorific Manyam Veerudu; executed 7 May 1924.

Frequently asked questions
Is Alluri Sitarama Raju's birth year 1897 or 1898? Sources differ. The date 4 July 1897 is widely used and 1898 appears in some references. If a question asks, use the year printed in your syllabus book.
Did Pingali Venkayya design today's national flag? He worked on flag designs and showed one to Gandhi at Vijayawada in 1921. The Constituent Assembly adopted the present flag on 22 July 1947, so avoid saying he alone designed it.
How many Telugu writers have won the Jnanpith Award? Three, as on October 2026 per the Jnanpith Trust list: Viswanatha Satyanarayana (1970), C. Narayana Reddy (1988) and Ravuri Bharadwaja (2012).
Which Telugu writer received the first Sahitya Akademi Award in Telugu? Suravaram Pratapa Reddy, in 1955, for Andhrula Sanghika Charitramu.
Is Potana from Andhra Pradesh or Telangana? His birthplace is argued between Bammera in Telangana and Ontimitta in AP. Do not fix it unless the question gives its own context.
Where can I read the movement history in full? In Freedom Struggle and Social Reform in Andhra.
Should I memorise Padma award years? Learn only the ones your syllabus mentions, and confirm them on the Padma Awards portal.

Not verified: the PIB, Britannica and padmaawards.gov.in pages returned access errors when opened, so birth and death dates and Padma award years rest on cross-checked secondary references. Alluri's birth year (1897 or 1898), Pingali's birth year (1876 or 1878), the founding year of the Andhra Mahila Sabha, Potana's birthplace and Vemana's era could not be settled and are hedged in the text. Confirm Padma award years on padmaawards.gov.in before an exam.
