Mizoram Fireman 2026: Eligibility, Physical Test, Exam Pattern, Syllabus and Preparation Guide
Start a free mock test Practice by topic

Fire is a special danger in Mizoram's towns. In Aizawl, houses are built close together on steep slopes, many are of timber, tin sheet and bamboo, and narrow lanes make it hard for a large fire engine to reach them. When a fire breaks out at night in such a locality, the first people who arrive and the last who leave are the firemen of the Fire and Emergency Services. Firefighters in the state also respond to road accidents on hill highways, landslides that bury houses, floods, building collapses and rescue calls from remote villages. It is a job that offers a chance to protect people directly.

This guide explains what a fireman does, who can apply, how selection usually works and what to study. There is one honest note before we begin: recruitment for Fireman posts in Mizoram is done when the Fire and Emergency Services Department has vacancies, and the agency and process can differ between advertisements. There is no standing yearly calendar. I will describe the usual structure of firefighter recruitment, and I will not quote physical standards or vacancy numbers, since they must be taken from the current notification.

Latest Notification and How Recruitment Cycles Work

The Fire and Emergency Services Department of the Government of Mizoram employs firemen, drivers, leading firemen, station officers and other staff at fire stations in Aizawl, district headquarters and some towns. Recruitment for the entry-level fireman post generally follows these steps:

  1. The department has vacancies at its stations and sends a requirement for recruitment.
  2. An advertisement is published, either by the department or by a recruiting body.
  3. Applications are invited. Candidates are called for a physical standards and efficiency test.
  4. A written test, if there is one, is conducted for those who qualify physically, or the other way around.
  5. A merit list, verification and medical examination follow, then appointment and training.

Because cycles are irregular and posts are limited, it is important to stay prepared, especially for the physical test. Read newspapers, the state gazette and the department website. Never pay any person for a promise of a fire service job.

What the Job Is Like

A fireman is trained to respond to emergencies with calm and speed. Work at a station includes:

  • Emergency response: answering fire calls, laying hose lines, operating pumps and controlling and extinguishing fire while protecting life and property.
  • Rescue: searching smoke-filled buildings with breathing apparatus, rescuing people trapped in collapsed buildings, vehicles or landslides, and helping in floods.
  • Medical first response: giving first aid, CPR and support until an ambulance arrives.
  • Equipment maintenance: checking pumps, hoses, ladders, breathing sets and vehicles daily so that they work at the moment of need.
  • Training and drills: regular physical training, hose drills, ladder drills and simulated rescue exercises.
  • Prevention and awareness: visiting schools and markets for fire safety demonstrations and inspecting fire extinguishers and exits in public buildings where the department is involved.
  • Duty hours: fire stations run round the clock, with shift duty, so night and holiday work is normal.

The work carries real risk. It requires strong physical fitness, a calm mind, teamwork and respect for procedure. Firemen who follow procedure and train regularly are the ones who stay safe.

Post and Vacancy Structure

The fire service hierarchy usually begins with Fireman, then Leading Fireman, Sub-Officer, Station Officer, Assistant Divisional Officer and Divisional Officer, with the rank names and structure depending on the state's rules. Driver-operators are often a separate post. Fireman is a uniformed entry post in Group C. Vacancies are notified with the advertisement. This post does not quote a number.

Item Note
Post Fireman
Department Fire and Emergency Services
Nature Uniformed, shift-based emergency service
Recruiter Department or recruiting body as per the notice
Promotion route Leading Fireman, Sub-Officer and above by service rules

Eligibility

Educational Qualification

Fireman is generally a Class 10 or Class 12 level post. Advertisements in various states have used either. Check the current notice for Mizoram. A certificate of a basic fire fighting course from a recognised institute, such as the National Fire Service College, or from a state fire training school, may be listed as an advantage or a requirement in some cycles, and you should check whether it is mentioned.

Age Limit

The lower age limit is normally 18 and the upper limit in the twenties, with relaxation for Scheduled Tribes and other reserved categories. Confirm the exact numbers and the cut-off date in the advertisement.

Physical Standards

Fireman posts have physical standards for height, chest (with expansion for men) and weight, with different standards for women where they are recruited, and relaxations for Scheduled Tribes in many states. Vision standards, colour vision and the absence of physical defects such as flat foot or knock knees are commonly required. I am not giving numbers, because they differ and can change. Locate the standards in the current advertisement and check them exactly. An advertisement may also require the ability to swim, which is not universal.

Residence and Character

Priority for state residents and Scheduled Tribes is common in small states. Character verification is part of the process for uniformed services. Keep certificates from the correct authority.

Application Process

  1. Read the advertisement for the qualification, age, standards and dates.
  2. Fill the online form or offline form as required, using your certificate details.
  3. Upload photograph, signature and documents in the format mentioned.
  4. Pay the fee, if any, through the specified mode.
  5. Download the admit card for the physical or written test.
  6. Carry originals and photocopies of documents on the day of the physical test.

Do not exaggerate your measurements or hide a medical condition. Both lead to disqualification during medical examination.

Selection Stages

Physical Standard Test (PST). Measurements of height, chest and weight.

Physical Efficiency Test (PET). A timed event may include a run, a climb of a rope or a ladder, a fireman's lift (carrying a person over the shoulder) or a shuttle run, depending on the notice. Fire service tests tend to include tasks that reflect the work. Check the specific events, distances and times in the advertisement.

Written test. An objective paper covering general knowledge, basic mathematics, reasoning, and often general science and fire safety awareness.

Interview. Possible in some cycles.

Medical examination. Vision, hearing, lung capacity, blood pressure, and general fitness.

Training. Selected candidates undergo basic firefighting training that includes drills, hose handling, breathing apparatus, rescue techniques and first aid, before assignment to a station.

Exam Pattern (Typical Structure, Verify in Notification)

Feature Typical structure
Physical tests Height, chest, weight, endurance events such as running, rope climbing and lifting
Written test Objective, in English, sometimes with Mizo
Subjects General knowledge, arithmetic, reasoning, basic science, fire safety awareness
Merit Written marks or a combination of physical and written scores
Medical Qualifying, with strict vision and fitness norms

Detailed Syllabus and How to Approach It

Fire Science and Safety Awareness

Even where the paper does not have a separate fire section, a few questions on fire and safety are common, and knowing them will also help you in training.

  • Fire triangle and tetrahedron: fuel, oxygen and heat form the fire triangle; the chemical chain reaction adds a fourth element in the tetrahedron. Removing any element puts the fire out: starving (removing fuel), smothering (removing oxygen) and cooling (removing heat).
  • Classes of fire: the commonly taught classification includes Class A (ordinary combustibles like wood, paper and cloth), Class B (flammable liquids such as petrol and oil), Class C (flammable gases), and Class D (metals). Electrical fires are treated as a category where the electricity must be cut off before extinguishing. Classification schemes differ slightly between standards, so learn the version in your study material.
  • Extinguishing agents: water (best for Class A, unsuitable on oil fires and live electrical equipment), foam (for flammable liquids), dry chemical powder (multi-purpose), carbon dioxide (for electrical equipment and flammable liquids, leaves no residue) and sand or blankets (for small fires).
  • Fire fighting equipment: hose reels, delivery hoses, branch pipes and nozzles, hydrants, portable pumps, ladders and breathing apparatus. Learn the names and the purpose of each.
  • Fire behaviour: heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation; flashover; backdraught; why smoke is often more deadly than flames. Smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide are major causes of death in fires.
  • Emergency numbers and days: 101 is the fire emergency number in India, 112 is the unified emergency number, and Fire Service Week is observed from 14 to 20 April in memory of the firemen who died in the 1944 Bombay Docks explosion.
  • Hill and urban fire issues: water supply on slopes, narrow access lanes, timber and tin houses, electrical short circuits and gas cylinders.

First Aid and Rescue

Basic first aid: control of bleeding, burns treatment (cool the burn with running water, do not apply ointment or ice, cover with a clean cloth), fractures, shock and unconsciousness. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation: for an adult, the widely taught ratio is 30 chest compressions to 2 breaths, with compressions at a rate of about 100 to 120 per minute. Know the recovery position and how to safely lift a person.

Disaster Management

The Disaster Management Act 2005, the National Disaster Management Authority, the State Disaster Management Authority, the National and State Disaster Response Forces, and hazards relevant to Mizoram: landslide, flood, earthquake, cyclonic storms and fire. Mizoram lies in a high seismic zone, and landslides during monsoon are a major hazard.

General Science

Class 10 level: states of matter and combustion, chemical reactions such as oxidation, pressure and its measurement, simple machines, heat and temperature, electricity and safety, and basic human body functions relevant to first aid.

Arithmetic and Reasoning

Percentages, ratio, time and work, speed and distance, average, simple mensuration such as the volume of a tank, and pressure-based problems. Reasoning: series, coding, direction sense, and blood relations.

General Knowledge

India and the North-East, and Mizoram: statehood on 20 February 1987, capital Aizawl, districts, rivers such as Tlawng and Tuirial, Phawngpui as the highest peak, main festivals and the 1986 Peace Accord. Current affairs of the last six months.

English and Mizo

Simple grammar, vocabulary and comprehension. Where Mizo is mentioned in the notice, prepare the language part.

Understanding Equipment and Station Routine

A candidate who already knows how a fire station runs feels at ease in training and in the interview. The basic picture is below.

  • Fire tender (fire engine): carries a pump, a water tank, hoses, ladders and rescue tools. Water tenders, foam tenders and rescue vehicles serve different jobs. In a hill town, smaller and lighter vehicles are valuable because lanes are narrow.
  • Hydrants and static water sources: a hydrant is a connection point on a water main. Where mains are weak, firemen draw water from tanks and streams, which is why suction lift and pump priming appear in training.
  • Hose and nozzle: a hose delivers water under pressure; the branch pipe or nozzle controls the jet or spray. A fog or spray pattern cools better and protects the crew, while a straight jet reaches farther.
  • Ladders: extension ladders, wheeled escape ladders and hook ladders are used to reach upper floors. Raising a ladder needs teamwork and a correct angle.
  • Breathing apparatus (BA sets): a compressed air cylinder, mask and regulator that let a fireman work in smoke. The cylinder gives limited working time, so entry and exit are controlled by a BA control officer.
  • Personal protective equipment: helmet, fire-resistant suit, boots, gloves and a torch. Correct wearing matters because a small gap can lead to a burn.
  • Daily routine: morning roll call, equipment check, physical training, drill or classroom training, station cleaning, and standby for calls in shifts.
  • Fireground rules: size up the situation first, rescue life before property, control the fire without causing more damage, and never enter a burning building alone.

You do not need to memorise every technical term for the written paper, but a few of these points often come up as questions, and the rest help in an interview.

Physical Preparation

Physical preparation is not a small side matter for a fireman's job; it is central. A workable weekly routine is:

  • Endurance: running on 3 or 4 days per week, starting with 20 minutes and building to 40 minutes or the distance you expect. Add a weekly long, slow run.
  • Speed: interval runs and shuttle runs once a week.
  • Strength: squats, lunges, push-ups, pull-ups, rope climbing or hanging exercises, core work and carrying weights. A fireman's lift practice with a friend, done carefully, helps.
  • Flexibility and recovery: stretching after every session and one full rest day per week.
  • Swimming: if you have access to a safe pool or river, learning to swim is a big advantage in rescue work, even when not required.
  • Diet and sleep: simple balanced food, enough protein from dal, eggs, fish or meat, and seven to eight hours of sleep.

Increase load gradually and avoid injury.

Salary and Career Growth

A fireman gets the pay of an entry-level Group C uniformed post in the state's pay structure, plus allowances that can include risk or uniform allowances in some services. Take the exact level from the advertisement. Promotions follow the department's rules: Fireman to Leading Fireman, then Sub-Officer and Station Officer, often with training courses and departmental tests. Some officers go for courses at national fire training institutions. The path is gradual, but stability and pension or retirement benefits as per the rules in force at the time of joining are attractive to many candidates.

Previous-Year Trends

Public records of Mizoram fireman cut-offs are not something I can cite, so here is only the general picture from uniformed recruitment:

  • The physical stage eliminates a large share of candidates. Passing it is a real achievement.
  • The written test is at the school level. Marks from fire safety and general science questions can separate candidates with similar general scores.
  • Because posts are few, even a small mistake on documents can end a candidacy.
  • Candidates with a fire safety course or swimming ability have a practical advantage in training, even if it is not part of merit.

Worked Practice Questions

Q1. The three elements of the fire triangle are: Answer: Fuel, oxygen and heat. Explanation: If any one is removed, the fire goes out. Smothering removes oxygen, starving removes fuel, and cooling removes heat.

Q2. Which extinguisher is most suitable for a fire in live electrical equipment? (a) Water (b) Foam (c) Carbon dioxide (d) Sand bucket only Answer: (c) Carbon dioxide. Explanation: CO2 does not conduct electricity and leaves no residue. Water and foam conduct electricity and put the user at risk.

Q3. The fire emergency number in India is: Answer: 101. Explanation: The unified emergency number, 112, also connects to emergency services.

Q4. Fire Service Week in India is observed each year in: Answer: April, from 14 to 20 April. Explanation: The dates commemorate the firefighters who died in the Bombay Docks explosion on 14 April 1944.

Q5. What is the pressure at the bottom of a 10 m deep water tank? (Take density of water 1000 kg per cubic metre and g = 10 m per second squared.) Answer: 100,000 Pa, or 100 kPa (above atmospheric). Explanation: P = ρgh = 1000 × 10 × 10 = 100,000 Pa.

Q6. Two firemen can lay a hose line in 6 minutes. How long will 3 firemen, working at the same rate, take? Answer: 4 minutes. Explanation: Work is 2 × 6 = 12 man-minutes. With 3 firemen it takes 12 / 3 = 4 minutes.

Q7. First aid for a minor burn should begin by: Answer: Cooling the burn under clean running water for several minutes. Explanation: Do not apply ice, butter or ointment; cover loosely with a clean non-fluffy cloth and seek medical help if the burn is large or deep.

Q8. The widely taught compression to breath ratio for adult CPR is: Answer: 30 : 2. Explanation: Thirty chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths, repeated until help arrives or the person recovers.

Q9. A water tank is 5 m long, 3 m wide and 2 m deep. How many litres does it hold when full? Answer: 30,000 litres. Explanation: Volume = 5 × 3 × 2 = 30 cubic metres, and 1 cubic metre is 1,000 litres.

Q10. Which Act of 2005 established the framework for disaster management in India? Answer: The Disaster Management Act, 2005. Explanation: It created the National Disaster Management Authority, and State and District Disaster Management Authorities.

Month-by-Month Preparation Plan

A four-month plan that combines fitness and the written test.

Month 1: Foundation. Begin a running plan, three days a week, plus strength work on two days. Read Class 9 and 10 science on combustion, pressure, heat and electricity. Start basic arithmetic revision.

Month 2: Build strength and content. Increase running distance and add rope climbing or pull-up practice. Study fire science, classes of fire, extinguishers and first aid. Begin reasoning practice daily and learn Mizoram GK.

Month 3: Test-specific practice. Practise the events likely to appear in the test: timed runs, shuttle runs, weight lifting and carry. Take weekly written mock tests, focus on your weak topics and read a newspaper every day.

Month 4: Peak and revise. Take two full mock tests a week, do a timed physical trial once a week, and reduce training volume slightly in the last week to avoid tiredness. Confirm your documents, medical readiness and eyesight.
