A constable in the Mizoram Police is the first person a citizen meets when something goes wrong, whether it is a road accident on the winding highway from Aizawl to Lunglei, a dispute in a locality, or a crowd at a festival. For many young people in the state the post is attractive because it is a government job with a uniform, it needs a school-level qualification and it can lead to promotion over the years. This guide explains how the recruitment normally works, what you have to prepare for both the physical and written parts, and where you must check the official notice because the details change.

An honest note first. Mizoram is a small state, and the police department does not run recruitment on a fixed yearly calendar. Vacancies are advertised when the department gets sanction to fill posts, sometimes as a large advertisement and sometimes as a small one. Which body runs the process, whether a written test is held, how many marks it carries and what the physical standards are can differ from one advertisement to the next. In this article I describe the stable, commonly followed structure of a constable recruitment and tell you clearly where the reader must confirm the current details. I have not used any specific vacancy count, fee, height or timing figure, because I cannot vouch for them.

How Recruitment Cycles Work

Police constable recruitment in a small state usually follows a familiar pattern. The department sends a requirement to the government, the government sanctions the posts, and an advertisement is published inviting applications. The process can be handled by the police department itself through a recruitment board or committee, or, in some cycles, through another state recruitment agency. Because I cannot say for certain which arrangement is in force today, the correct step is to read the latest advertisement and find out the name of the recruiting authority and the official website where the details are hosted.

Typical stages, in the order they are often followed:

Stage What normally happens
Advertisement and application Applications through the method stated in the notice, often online with printout or offline forms in some cycles
Physical measurement Height and chest measurements, sometimes weight, with relaxation for Scheduled Tribe candidates as per the notice
Physical efficiency test Running, and in many recruitments jumping or throwing events
Written test Objective test on general subjects, sometimes only qualifying
Interview or documents Verification of certificates, sometimes a short interview
Medical examination Eyesight, hearing and general fitness
Training Basic training at a police training centre

The order of the stages is not fixed. Some recruitments hold the physical test first because it is the larger filter, and others put the written test first. You should train for both from the start, because you may not have time to begin the second half after being told what it is.

What a Constable Does

A police constable does many things in a single week: patrol duty, guard duty at government buildings, traffic regulation, assisting in the registration and investigation of cases under the guidance of an officer, escorting prisoners, serving summons, maintaining law and order during festivals and elections, and helping in disaster response. In a state with hilly terrain, heavy monsoon landslides and a long international border, police duty also includes assistance in rescue work and vigilance against smuggling. Mizoram has repeatedly seen seizures of narcotics linked to cross-border movement, so awareness of drug-related law enforcement is a real part of daily work in many districts.

The department also has specialised wings such as armed police battalions and units for traffic, telecommunications and other functions. A recruitment notice may specify whether the constable posts are for the armed branch or for the civil police. They can differ in physical standards, training and postings. Read this line carefully.

Post and Vacancy Structure

The notification names the posts, the number of vacancies, the category-wise distribution and any posts reserved for women or for special categories. Because Mizoram has a large Scheduled Tribe population, ST reservation forms a major part of the roster. I cannot say what the current numbers are, and I would ask you not to trust a figure quoted in a video or a message group.

Eligibility

Educational Qualification

The minimum qualification for constable is usually a pass in a school-leaving examination, and the notice will say whether it is Class 10 or Class 12 for the particular post. Recruitments for different branches within the same department may specify different levels, so check the exact line for the post you want.

Age Limit

The lower limit is generally 18 years. The upper limit for general candidates has usually been in the mid-twenties, with relaxation for Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste, OBC and other categories, and for candidates with prior service. The exact age limit and the date on which age is counted are stated in the notice, and you should calculate your age on that date.

Nationality and Residence

Candidates must be Indian citizens. Recruitment to Mizoram posts often gives preference to, or is restricted to, residents of the state, and Scheduled Tribe benefits are granted on the certificate of the competent authority. The exact rule can differ between advertisements. If you hold a Permanent Resident Certificate or a Scheduled Tribe certificate, keep the originals and copies ready.

Language

Constables in Mizoram work mainly in Mizo and English. The notice may require that you have studied Mizo, or may include a language component in the test. Even where it is not compulsory, comfort in Mizo is a practical advantage in police work, and comfort in English helps you with forms and reports.

Physical Standards

Physical standards for constable posts generally include a minimum height and a chest measurement (with a required expansion) for male candidates, and a minimum height for female candidates, with relaxations for Scheduled Tribe candidates in many recruitments. I am deliberately not giving figures. They change from advertisement to advertisement, and giving an inaccurate height could make someone waste a year. The exact standards will be printed in the notification and must be measured against your own body well before applying.

Medical Standards

Eyesight, colour vision, hearing and general health are checked. Correctable eyesight defects may or may not be accepted. Physical disabilities, flat feet, knock-knees and squint can disqualify. If you suspect any problem, consult a doctor early and find out from the notice what is acceptable, and do not assume that surgery just before the test will be accepted.

Application Process

  1. Read the advertisement fully, including the eligibility table and the list of certificates.
  2. Prepare the documents: educational certificates, date-of-birth proof, residence or Scheduled Tribe certificate, passport-size photographs, and any certificates for special categories.
  3. Apply in the manner stated. If it is an online process, register with an active mobile number and email.
  4. Pay the fee if any, in the prescribed mode. Do not assume the amount, and check for concessions.
  5. Keep the receipt and application number safely, because the department will use it in all later communication.

Apply on your own or through a government-run service centre. Do not pay anyone who promises "guaranteed selection" or who claims to arrange the physical test. Police recruitment is a favourite target of fraudsters, so any such offer is a warning sign.

Selection Process in Detail

Physical Measurement Test

You will be measured for height and, for male candidates, chest. Arrive early, be barefoot and be honest. Do not try to raise the measurement artificially. Stretching, hydration and posture correction help within reason, but any fraud disqualifies the candidate.

Physical Efficiency Test

Commonly, this includes a running event, with a longer distance for men and a shorter one for women, and often a long jump, high jump or shot put. The passing timings and distances are in the notification. Training should be based on the numbers in the current advertisement, but a general approach is given later in this article.

Written Test

A written test, when it is held, is usually objective. It is set on general subjects at the school level: general knowledge, arithmetic, reasoning, English or Mizo language and current affairs. Whether it is qualifying, or its marks are added to those of other stages, is stated in the notice. Some recruitments give final selection on the basis of the combined score of the written test and the physical test, and others treat the physical test as only qualifying.

Interview, Verification and Medical

Document verification checks the originals of all the certificates you claimed. Even a small mismatch in name spelling or date of birth can cause trouble. A medical test follows. The department may also carry out a police verification of character.

Subject-wise Syllabus

The notice will list the actual subjects. The following syllabus follows the usual pattern for a constable-level test.

General Knowledge and Current Affairs

India. Basic history from the freedom movement, the Constitution and its features, the President, Prime Minister, Parliament, the states, important days, awards, sports and major schemes.

Mizoram. Study the following in a notebook, one topic per page:

  • The history of the Lushai Hills, the arrival of missionaries in the 1890s and the spread of education.
  • The insurgency and the Mizo Accord of 30 June 1986, and statehood on 20 February 1987.
  • The state's capital, districts and district headquarters, and important rivers such as the Tlawng and Tuirial, lakes such as Palak Dil and the highest peak, Phawngpui.
  • Festivals such as Chapchar Kut, Mim Kut and Pawl Kut, and the bamboo dance Cheraw.
  • The Inner Line system that regulates the entry of non-residents under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873.
  • The role of village councils, the Young Mizo Association and church organisations in local life.
  • Important state schemes and department names, including the New Land Use Policy.

Current affairs. Six months of national and Mizoram news. Pay attention to police-related stories, law changes, cyber crime awareness and disaster management.

Basic Law Awareness

Some recruitments include a short police-related section or ask basic legal questions. In July 2024 the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) replaced the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act. Learn the broad purpose of each, and only note section numbers you are sure about, for example that the offence of murder, earlier under IPC section 302, is now under BNS section 103, and that the provision for recording the First Information Report, earlier CrPC section 154, is now BNSS section 173. Keep in mind that the exam may still use the old names, so know both.

Arithmetic

Number system, percentages, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, simple interest, time and work, time speed and distance, mensuration and data interpretation. Constable-level questions are usually direct and rewarded by speed. Learn tables up to 20 and squares up to 30.

Reasoning

Series, analogies, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, ranking, syllogism, and non-verbal figure questions. Two hours of practice per week over a few months will make you fast.

English and Mizo

For English: grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, sentence correction and simple translation. For Mizo, if it is a section, practise reading a newspaper, translating short passages and using grammar correctly. Mizo is written in the Roman script, so reading is easy for speakers, but formal writing needs practice.

Computer and Everyday Science

Some tests include basic computer awareness and simple science questions on health, environment and everyday life. Do not skip these because they are quick marks.

Exam Pattern Overview

The table below is a typical structure, not an official pattern. Confirm the current numbers in the notice.

Item Typical arrangement
Question type Objective, multiple choice
Subjects General knowledge, arithmetic, reasoning, language
Duration Around 90 to 120 minutes for a full paper, verify
Negative marking Decided in the notice
Physical stage Measurement plus efficiency test
Final list Combination of stages as stated in the notice

Salary and Career Growth

Constable pay in Mizoram is set by the state's pay rules, which follow a pay-matrix system. The exact level and allowances are printed in the advertisement, and I do not quote a figure here. Additional allowances and benefits such as dearness allowance, ration or uniform allowance and travel allowance may apply as decided by the government.

The usual promotion ladder runs from Constable to Head Constable, Assistant Sub-Inspector and Sub-Inspector on departmental seniority and examinations. A constable with a graduation degree can also apply for the direct recruitment route to Mizoram Police Sub-Inspector when it is advertised. Keep your studies going after joining, because that route can rise faster than seniority alone.

Trends From Previous Recruitments

I do not have verified cut-off marks, and I will not give any. A few qualitative points are safe.

Physical stages usually eliminate more candidates than people expect. Many applicants prepare only for the written test and then fail the running event, while others train hard and stumble on a general knowledge paper.

Where a written test exists, questions are typically simple. The difference is made by accuracy and speed, not by exotic topics.

Mizoram-specific knowledge tends to appear in the general knowledge portion. A candidate who has learnt state basics has a small but real advantage.

Documentation problems, such as certificates without the required format or names spelt differently, remove some candidates at the final stage. This is entirely avoidable.

Practice Questions With Answers

  1. General Knowledge. The Chapchar Kut festival of Mizoram is celebrated in which season? Answer: Spring, usually around March, after the clearing of the jhum fields. It is associated with the completion of jungle clearing for shifting cultivation.

  2. General Knowledge. The Cheraw is a traditional dance of Mizoram performed with which material? Answer: Bamboo. Dancers step in and out between horizontal bamboo staves that are struck together in rhythm.

  3. General Knowledge. The Tropic of Cancer passes through which of the following? (a) Mizoram (b) Sikkim (c) Arunachal Pradesh (d) Meghalaya. Answer: (a) Mizoram. It is one of the Indian states crossed by the Tropic of Cancer.

  4. Law awareness. Under the new criminal laws in force from 1 July 2024, in which Sanhita is the provision on recording the First Information Report now found? Answer: The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), section 173, which replaced CrPC section 154.

  5. Arithmetic. A candidate runs 1,600 metres in 8 minutes at a steady speed. What is the speed in kilometres per hour? Answer: 1.6 km in 8 minutes. In hours, 8 minutes is 8/60 = 2/15 hour. Speed = 1.6 / (2/15) = 1.6 x 7.5 = 12 km/h.

  6. Arithmetic. In a recruitment drive, 25 per cent of 800 candidates were absent in the written test. Of those who appeared, 30 per cent passed. How many passed? Answer: Absent = 200, so 600 appeared. 30 per cent of 600 = 180.

  7. Reasoning. A constable walks 5 km north, then 3 km east, then 5 km south. How far is he from the starting point, and in which direction? Answer: The north and south legs cancel out, so he is 3 km east of the starting point.

  8. Reasoning. Find the next number: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, ? Answer: 42. The differences are 4, 6, 8, 10 and then 12, so 30 + 12 = 42. Equivalently, the terms are 1x2, 2x3, 3x4, 4x5, 5x6, 6x7.

  9. English. Choose the correct sentence. (a) Each of the constables have reported. (b) Each of the constables has reported. Answer: (b). "Each" is singular and takes "has".

  10. Basic science. Which vitamin is mainly produced in the skin on exposure to sunlight? Answer: Vitamin D.

Training and Preparation Plan

The best preparation is a plan that gives equal seriousness to the body and the mind.

Months 1 and 2: Build the base. Begin with brisk walking and easy running three to four days a week. Start the day with a stretching routine. In the evening, spend one hour on basic arithmetic and one hour on general knowledge. Begin a Mizoram notebook.

Months 3 and 4: Add strength and speed. Increase running distance gradually and add one interval session a week, for example alternating fast and slow laps. Practise the jumping and throwing events if they are in the notice, with correct technique, preferably under the guidance of a coach or a serving sportsperson. Strength exercises such as push-ups, squats and planks build the muscles that protect knees and ankles. In study, finish the school-level arithmetic and start reasoning.

Months 5 and 6: Test yourself. Time your running every week and compare it with the standard in the notice. Take one written mock every week and review mistakes. Revise current affairs from newspapers and magazines.

Final month: Peak and rest. Keep training volume steady in the first three weeks, and in the final week reduce intensity and sleep well. Prepare your document folder, with two sets of copies. On the day of the test, eat lightly, drink water and reach the ground early.

Injury and Diet

Do not increase distance too quickly. A shin or knee injury a month before the test can undo six months of work. Eat regular meals with rice, dal, vegetables, eggs or fish where available, and fruit. Avoid tobacco and alcohol. Mizoram has strict liquor laws and a serious public concern with drug abuse, and a candidate who is involved with drugs has no future in this service.

Books and Resources

  • School textbooks (Classes 8 to 10) for arithmetic and science.
  • A basic reasoning practice book with sectional tests.
  • A general knowledge book covering India, and Mizoram-specific material from state publications and standard local books. If you are unsure of a specific title, ask a college librarian in Aizawl or Lunglei.
  • A local newspaper and one national newspaper for current affairs.
  • Constitution basics from a school civics book.
  • Timed practice papers on pareeksha.in, which can be attempted calmly at home.

Common Mistakes

Neglecting the running until the final month is the most common mistake. Endurance takes months to build.

Copying training plans from another state without checking the standard in the Mizoram notice.

Ignoring the written test because the physical seems to be the main hurdle.

Not checking eligibility, especially age and certificate format, before applying.

Believing brokers and paying money for a seat. No genuine recruitment sells posts.

Over-training in the last week, arriving tired at the ground.

How Constable Compares With Other Mizoram Posts

Post Qualification, typically Physical stage Notes
Police Constable School level, verify Yes Uniformed, first rung of the police
Police Sub-Inspector Graduation Yes Supervisory rank, verify process
Forest Guard School level, verify Yes, usually Forest department field job
Fireman School level, verify Yes Emergency service, physical fitness required
LDC and clerical posts Class 12 or graduation, verify Usually no Office work, typing or computer skills may apply

Because the physical fitness base is shared, a candidate can prepare for the constable, forest guard and fireman posts together and choose which one to apply for as advertisements come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Which body conducts Mizoram Police constable recruitment? It has been handled through the police department's recruitment arrangement, but the exact body can differ. Read the current advertisement to confirm.

Q2. Is there a written test? Often yes, but the pattern, marks and whether it is qualifying are stated in each advertisement. Check.

Q3. What are the height and chest requirements? They are in the notification and differ for men and women, with relaxations for Scheduled Tribe candidates in many cycles. I have not given numbers because they may have changed.

Q4. Can women apply? Yes, women constable posts are generally advertised. The notice will give the number and the physical standards for women.

Q5. Do I need to know Mizo? Mizo is the main working language among the public, and the notice may require it. Even if not required, it helps.

Q6. Can candidates from outside Mizoram apply? That depends on the advertisement. Many state posts are limited to residents or Scheduled Tribe candidates of the state. Check the residence clause.

Q7. What is the medical standard? Eyesight, hearing and general fitness. The permitted vision standard is in the notice.

Q8. Is coaching needed for the physical test? No. Regular training and a simple plan work. Coaching or a trainer helps with technique for the jumps and throws.

Q9. Can a constable become an officer? Yes, through departmental promotion and, if you are a graduate and meet the conditions, through direct recruitment when it is advertised.
