Teaching is the largest source of government employment for graduates in Sikkim. Schools run by the state are spread across the valleys and hill slopes of the four old districts, and each of them needs teachers for languages, mathematics, science, social science and other subjects. The two posts that graduates and postgraduates most often ask about are the Graduate Teacher (GT), who usually teaches the upper primary and lower secondary classes, and the Post Graduate Teacher (PGT), who teaches the senior secondary classes.
There is one thing to say at the start. Sikkim does not have a single, standing, annual teacher recruitment exam with a published calendar. Teacher posts have been filled through different routes at different times: advertisements issued by the Education Department, selection processes run by the Sikkim Public Service Commission or the Sikkim Subordinate Services Selection Board, and separate arrangements for contractual or temporary teachers. So this guide sticks to what is stable, namely the qualifications, the pedagogy syllabus and the way to prepare, and it asks you to read the current advertisement for the recruiting body, the number of posts and the scheme of the examination.
How Teacher Recruitment Works in Sikkim
School education in Sikkim is administered by the state's Human Resource Development Department, and its Directorate of Education deals with the schools. When the department sends a requisition for teachers, the appointing authority is the government, and the actual selection is done by a body named in the rules or in the notice. Depending on the cycle, this may be the SPSC, the SSSB or a departmental committee. There have been contractual and short-term arrangements too, in which candidates are appointed on merit lists or interviews.
Three things matter to you as a candidate.
- The recruiting body decides the format. If the notice says SPSC, the process will be that of a Commission with a written test and a possible interview. If it says SSSB, expect a written test with an objective pattern. If it is a departmental process, it may depend on academic merit and an interview or demonstration.
- Eligibility tests run alongside. The Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) is a qualifying condition for teachers in the classes covered by the Right to Education framework. See Sikkim TET for the details of that test.
- Vacancies are subject-wise. A notice may open only a few subjects, and each subject may have a small number of posts. Read the subject list and the qualification for each subject.
What the Job Involves
A Graduate Teacher in Sikkim teaches a subject to the upper primary or secondary classes, generally classes six to eight or six to ten depending on the school. A PGT teaches classes eleven and twelve in a subject such as English, Nepali, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Political Science, Economics, Commerce or Computer Science, subject to what the school offers. The duties include:
- planning and delivering lessons in line with the prescribed curriculum and the National Education Policy 2020 framework, which emphasises competencies and less rote learning;
- preparing tests and assessments, evaluating answer scripts and keeping student records;
- helping students with learning gaps, including those who are first-generation learners or who are using English or Hindi as a second language at home;
- taking part in school activities such as assemblies, sports, cultural days, scouts and guides, and community programmes;
- administrative work such as attendance, scholarship forms, mid-day meal supervision where applicable and school data entry.
Sikkim has a rich linguistic mix. Nepali is the language of a large share of the population, English is the medium of instruction in most schools, and Bhutia, Lepcha, Limboo and other languages are taught in many places as part of the state's language policy. A teacher who can explain a difficult idea in a simple local word has an advantage in the classroom, though the exam will test your subject and pedagogy rather than language ability alone.
Post and Vacancy Structure
| Item | Graduate Teacher (GT) | Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) |
|---|---|---|
| Typical classes | Upper primary and lower secondary | Senior secondary |

Eligibility
Educational Qualification
For the Graduate Teacher, the standard requirement in India is a bachelor's degree in the relevant subject or subjects, with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or an equivalent teacher training qualification recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). For teaching classes six to eight, NCTE's rules include passing the TET, Paper II, along with the degree and the teaching qualification. The percentage of marks required in the degree varies, with a common norm of 50 percent for some categories, though the advertisement fixes it.
For the Post Graduate Teacher, the requirement is generally a master's degree in the subject with a B.Ed., and often a minimum percentage of marks. Some subjects may require a specific degree combination. For example, a PGT in Commerce may require a master's in Commerce, and a PGT in Computer Science may require a master's in Computer Science or a related degree.
The teacher education framework is changing. Under NEP 2020, the four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) is being introduced, and a four-year integrated degree is expected to become the basic route for entering teaching over time. Read the advertisement for which degrees are accepted in the current cycle.
Age Limit
The maximum age for state teaching posts is stated in the notice, and is usually higher than for clerical posts, with relaxation for reserved categories. Do not use an age from another state.
Sikkim Subject, COI and Language
Teacher posts in Sikkim government schools have often been reserved for Sikkim Subject holders or holders of the Certificate of Identification (COI), or their descendants, though the exact rule varies by post and cycle. Because I cannot confirm the position for the current year, verify it in the notice. The advertisement may also ask for a language qualification, such as Nepali or another local language taught in schools, for some subjects or for language teacher posts.
Reservation
Reservation follows Sikkim government rules. Check your category, the certificate format and the date until which the certificate must be valid.
Application Process
Applications follow the format in the advertisement, with documents attached. Prepare attested copies of the matriculation certificate for age, all degree marksheets, B.Ed. marksheet and certificate, the TET pass certificate and its validity, Sikkim Subject or COI proof, category certificate and a photograph and signature. Fee, if any, is in the notice. A frequent cause of rejection is a mismatch between the subject of your degree and the subject of the post, so check the exact combination allowed.
Selection Stages
The selection follows the pattern set by the recruiting body.
- Written test. For an SPSC or SSSB process, a written test is likely, with questions on general awareness, pedagogy and the subject.
- Document verification. Certificates are checked against the eligibility conditions.
- Interview or demonstration. Some cycles include an interview, a demo lesson or a language test.
- Merit list and posting. Appointments follow merit and reservation, and postings may be to remote schools first.
Typical Exam Pattern
The exact pattern for Sikkim is in the notice. For preparation, use this general structure that many state teacher tests follow.
| Section | Content | Typical weight |
|---|---|---|
| Child development and pedagogy | Learning theories, inclusion, assessment, curriculum | Moderate |
| Language proficiency | English and, where asked, Nepali or Hindi | Moderate |
| Subject knowledge | Content up to the level of the post | Highest |
| General awareness | Current affairs, Sikkim, India, reasoning | Moderate |
For a GT, the subject knowledge usually spans the school curriculum up to class ten and a graduation-level base. For a PGT, it spans senior secondary content at a deeper level. Marks, duration and negative marking depend on the notice.
Detailed Syllabus and How to Study It
Child Development and Pedagogy
This section is asked in nearly every teacher test, and it is easy to score if you study systematically.
Development. Learn the stages of Piaget: sensorimotor (birth to about two years), preoperational (two to seven), concrete operational (seven to eleven) and formal operational (eleven onward). Understand Vygotsky's zone of proximal development and scaffolding, Erikson's psychosocial stages, Kohlberg's three levels of moral development (pre-conventional, conventional and post-conventional), Bandura's social learning and Skinner's operant conditioning. Learn Gardner's multiple intelligences, which began with seven types and later added the naturalist type.
Learning. Understand motivation, transfer of learning, memory, forgetting, attention and interest. Study constructivism, cooperative learning, inquiry-based and activity-based learning and how a teacher applies them in a small multigrade classroom.
Inclusion. Learn about children with special needs, learning disabilities such as dyslexia and dyscalculia, giftedness, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and the idea of inclusive classrooms.
Assessment. Learn formative and summative assessment, continuous and comprehensive evaluation, diagnostic tests and remedial teaching, portfolio and rubrics, and the emphasis of NEP 2020 on competency-based assessment.
Legal and policy framework. The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE), which makes education free and compulsory for children aged six to fourteen following Article 21A, the National Curriculum Framework, and the main goals of NEP 2020. Know that NEP 2020 encourages the use of the home language or mother tongue as the medium of instruction at least until class five, and preferably up to class eight.
Language Proficiency
For English, cover grammar (tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, modals, voice and narration), vocabulary, comprehension and correction of sentences. Read editorials for twenty minutes a day. If Nepali or another language is a section, practise grammar, word formation, comprehension and translation. Read the notice for whether language is tested as a qualifying paper.
Subject Knowledge
Divide your subject into units and follow the school syllabus in the textbooks. For a GT, start with the NCERT books of classes six to ten, since Sikkim's schools follow a national-style curriculum, and the questions are often based on them. Then move to your graduation-level books. For a PGT, work through classes eleven and twelve and add a master's level text.
- Mathematics: number systems, algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, statistics and probability; for PGT, calculus, vectors, matrices and coordinate geometry.
- Science and Physics, Chemistry, Biology: basic laws, numericals, reactions and life processes, with diagrams. Practise unit conversions.
- Social Science and History, Geography, Political Science, Economics: map work, timeline of events, the Constitution and Indian economy; add Sikkim's history, geography and administration.
- English and Nepali: literature, grammar, teaching of language skills, and writing.
- Commerce, Computer Science and others: as per the advertisement.
General Awareness and Sikkim
Read current affairs for the last year, with a focus on education, science, sports and government schemes. For Sikkim, know the following basic facts, which are widely documented. Sikkim became the 22nd state of India on 16 May 1975. Its capital is Gangtok. Kangchenjunga on the border with Nepal is the highest peak in India. The Chogyal dynasty ruled the kingdom from 1642, when Phuntsog Namgyal was consecrated as the first Chogyal. The Teesta and Rangit are the main rivers. The state is known for organic farming, and it has a large share of forest area. Learn the four old districts and the recently renamed and newly created districts from an official source, since the list changed in the last few years.
Salary and Career Growth
Teachers in the state government are paid according to the pay scale the state has adopted along with dearness allowance and other benefits. Do not use a figure from an unofficial page; the notice or the department's pay matrix shows the current amount. Graduate Teachers can be promoted to the PGT cadre and later to posts such as Vice Principal and Principal, subject to service rules, eligibility and vacancies. Teachers can also join educational administration as inspectors, subject to the rules. A master's degree, a PhD or additional qualifications can help in advancement.
Previous Year Trend
Because teacher recruitment in a small state is irregular and changes in mechanism, there is no long series of papers that can be analysed responsibly, and you should distrust claims of "expected questions". What is consistent in teacher tests across states is that child pedagogy is asked in a predictable way. Questions on Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg, Bloom, inclusion, RTE and assessment recur, and subject questions follow the school textbooks closely. A candidate who has mastered NCERT content and the pedagogy list generally does well.
Worked Practice Questions

The policy stresses learning in the language the child understands best, wherever possible.
Month-by-Month Preparation Plan
A plan of five months suits a candidate who already holds the degree and the TET. Adjust it to your dates.
Month 1. Get the syllabus of the previous notice, if available, and the school textbooks for your subject. Start pedagogy from development and learning theories. Write two-line notes for each thinker.
Month 2. Finish pedagogy including inclusion, assessment, RTE and NEP. Start the subject: read NCERT chapters, solve the exercises, note formulae and definitions.
Month 3. Continue the subject at the higher level. Start English practice daily: grammar exercises, one passage and ten vocabulary words. Start a Sikkim fact file.
Month 4. Revise the subject once fully. Take one full mock test per week, analyse errors and repeat weak chapters. Add current affairs and general awareness.
Month 5. Prepare for the demonstration or interview: plan a ten-minute lesson on a topic from your subject with an example from a Sikkim village or town. Practise explaining a concept without using difficult words. Revise pedagogy notes and take timed tests.
Books and Resources
Use school textbooks (NCERT for the classes you will teach), a standard book on child development and pedagogy that follows the TET syllabus, and a grammar book for English. For NEP 2020 and the RTE Act, use the official summaries. For Sikkim, use the state government portal and standard reference books for the region, along with newspapers. Keep TET and CTET previous papers as practice material, as they are the closest public sources of question style.
Common Mistakes
- Starting with heavy reference books instead of school textbooks.
- Treating pedagogy as theory to memorise instead of ideas to apply in a classroom situation.
- Choosing the wrong subject combination in the application.
- Forgetting the TET certificate or its validity.
- Neglecting English grammar because of a good subject score.
- Assuming that posts are filled through only one route and missing notices from the SSSB or departmental sources.
Comparison with Other Sikkim Exams
| Exam | Level | Main focus |
|---|---|---|
| Sikkim GT/PGT | Graduate or postgraduate with B.Ed. | Pedagogy, subject, language |
| Sikkim TET | Qualifying eligibility test | Child development, language, subject |
| SPSC Assistant Professor | Master's with NET or PhD | College teaching, aptitude |
| Sikkim SSSB Junior Assistant | 12th pass | Clerical exam |
A candidate who has cleared the TET can attempt teacher notifications more easily, and pedagogy notes carry forward to many exams.

Final Word
A steady teacher candidate does three things: masters the school textbooks, learns the pedagogy list well enough to apply it and follows the official notices without waiting for rumours. Since Sikkim's recruitment is irregular, the years before the notice are your advantage. The practice tests on pareeksha.in can help with timing and revision, and the advertisement from the recruiting body remains the final word on eligibility, pattern and dates.
