A teaching post in a Sikkim government college is one of the more respected jobs in the state, and it is also one of the least predictable to prepare for. The number of government colleges is small, each subject department may need only one or two faculty members, and vacancies are filled when a post falls vacant or is sanctioned. The Sikkim Public Service Commission (SPSC) is the constitutional body that recruits for many gazetted and professional posts in the state, and college teaching posts have generally come to it through the Human Resource Development Department, which looks after school and higher education in Sikkim.
This guide explains what the job involves, the UGC-based qualifications that nearly every Assistant Professor advertisement in India uses, how selection typically works, and how to prepare for the aptitude and subject papers. It is written honestly: there is no standing yearly Sikkim Assistant Professor exam with a published calendar, and any exact marks or pattern must come from the advertisement that is current when you apply.
How College Teaching Posts Are Filled in Sikkim
Sikkim has a handful of government degree colleges. Places such as Tadong, Burtuk, Namchi, Gyalshing and Rhenock have had government colleges, and there is also a government law college in Gangtok. These are different from Sikkim University, which is a central university located near Gangtok and which recruits its own faculty through its own notifications. They are also different from private institutions, which recruit on their own.
For the state government colleges, the appointing authority is the state government, and the selection can be done through the SPSC, a selection committee constituted for the purpose, or a walk-in interview for contractual or guest posts. Regular Assistant Professor posts have been advertised through the Commission in the past, but arrangements change with rules. The advertisement is where you find out who is conducting the selection, which subjects are open, how many posts there are, the reservation, the last date and the method of selection. Read it fully before you begin.
Two practical points follow. First, watch for subject-wise notices, because a college may need only a specific subject such as Botany, Nepali or Economics, and general notices for all subjects are less common. Second, keep an eye on guest faculty and contractual notices. They do not carry the security of a regular post, but they give teaching experience, and some advertisements value it.
What an Assistant Professor Does
The Assistant Professor is the entry-level regular teaching post in a college, and it is a Class I or gazetted post in most state services. The duties include:
- Teaching. Conducting lectures and tutorials for undergraduate classes, and in some colleges postgraduate classes. With the National Education Policy 2020 being implemented in stages, teachers in many states are handling semester systems, choice-based credit courses and multidisciplinary electives.
- Assessment. Setting internal tests, evaluating assignments and answer scripts, and helping with the university examination process. Sikkim's colleges are affiliated to a university, and the affiliation rules decide the curriculum.
- Mentoring and academic administration. Advising students, working with the principal on timetables, admission, library and laboratory work, attending the college's academic committees and, where required, collaborating with the NAAC accreditation process.
- Research and extension. Publishing papers, attending seminars and taking part in community programmes, subject to the workload that the college has.
In Sikkim, the teacher may work in a small college with students from many linguistic communities, some of whom come from remote villages and study in a second or third language. That makes clear teaching, patience and local awareness practical strengths as well as exam topics.
Post and Vacancy Structure
Numbers are not given here because they are set by the department for each notice and by subject. What to expect in an advertisement is as follows.
| Item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Post | Assistant Professor in a named subject, or a general notice with subject list |
| Recruiting body | SPSC, or as named in the notice |
| Vacancies | Subject-wise and category-wise |
| Pay | Academic pay level as adopted by the Sikkim government |
| Selection | Written test, interview or both, as notified |
| Residence | Sikkim Subject or COI condition, if any |
Eligibility
Educational Qualification
Assistant Professor eligibility in India is governed by University Grants Commission regulations, and the state usually adopts them. Under the UGC Regulations of 2018, the standard requirement has been:
- a Master's degree with at least 55 percent marks (or an equivalent grade) in the relevant subject, from an Indian university or an equivalent foreign degree, and
- clearing the National Eligibility Test (UGC NET or CSIR NET) or a State Eligibility Test (SET/SLET) for the subject, or holding a Ph.D. awarded in line with the UGC's regulations, in which case NET may be exempted.
The UGC has also released revised draft regulations in recent times, and the requirements around subject flexibility between the Master's degree and the NET/PhD subject may change when new rules are notified. Sikkim's advertisement will state the rules in force at the time, so check the subject in which your Master's and NET fall. If you are still awaiting your NET or your Master's result, find out whether the last date accepts a provisional or result-awaited certificate. Usually it does not.
Age Limit
State services generally set a maximum age with relaxation for reserved categories and sometimes for service candidates. The age for Assistant Professor posts is generally higher than for clerical posts, since candidates complete their doctorates. Do not assume a number. Read the advertisement.
Sikkim Subject, COI and Domicile
Many Sikkim government posts have provisions relating to the Sikkim Subject certificate or the Certificate of Identification (COI), and some are reserved for such candidates or their descendants. Others, particularly in specialised subjects where teachers are hard to find, may be open to Indian citizens generally. I cannot say what applies in the current year for your subject. If you are from outside Sikkim, read the advertisement carefully. If you are from Sikkim, make sure your certificate is valid and in the right format.
Reservation
Reservation follows the rules of the Sikkim government for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and any other notified categories. Keep the certificate ready and check the format.
Application Process
Applications are typically made in the format described in the advertisement, which may be online or on paper, with supporting documents. Expect to attach a photograph, signature, proofs of date of birth, Master's marksheets, NET or SET certificate or PhD documents, Sikkim Subject or COI proof if applicable, category certificate and experience certificates. A fee, if any, is stated in the notice. Keep your academic documents organised, because many candidates lose out on small matters like a name mismatch between a NET certificate and a degree certificate.
Selection Stages
Selections for college faculty in Indian states generally follow one of three patterns:
- Written test followed by interview. The written test is objective or descriptive and covers general aptitude and the subject, and shortlisted candidates are interviewed.
- Interview based on an academic score. Marks are awarded for academic record, NET or PhD, experience and publications, followed by an interview and teaching demonstration.
- Direct interview with a subject expert panel. Common for smaller vacancies.
Sikkim's recent practice for each subject should be read from the current advertisement. If a written test is announced, prepare for the pattern below. If only an interview is announced, most of the syllabus below is still useful as the panel's questions come from it.
Typical Exam Pattern
There is no fixed Sikkim pattern that I can state with confidence, so this table shows the structure that UGC-style tests use, so that you can prepare with a benchmark and then adjust when the notice arrives.
| Part | Content | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| General paper | Teaching and research aptitude, reasoning, comprehension, higher education | Objective |
| Subject paper | Master's-level subject content | Objective or descriptive |
| Sikkim awareness | State history, geography, society, administration | Objective, if included |
| Interview | Subject depth, teaching approach, Sikkim context | Panel |
For reference, the UGC NET general paper has traditionally had 50 objective questions and the subject paper 100, but that is the national test and not a rule for Sikkim.
Detailed Syllabus and How to Study It
General Paper: The Ten Units
The UGC's general paper has ten units, and it is a good template for any Assistant Professor aptitude test.
Teaching aptitude. Learn the nature and objectives of teaching, characteristics of learners at the adult stage, factors affecting teaching, methods (lecture, discussion, demonstration, seminar, project), teaching aids and evaluation systems. Know Bloom's taxonomy, both the original (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation) and the revised version (remember, understand, apply, analyse, evaluate, create). Understand formative versus summative assessment and the role of feedback.
Research aptitude. Meaning and types of research (fundamental, applied, action), the steps of research, hypotheses, variables, sampling methods, tools of data collection, ethical issues and plagiarism, thesis writing, referencing and journals. Learn the difference between qualitative and quantitative methods, and what type I and type II errors mean.
Comprehension. One or two passages and questions. Practise reading a passage quickly and answering only from the text.
Communication. Elements of communication, barriers, classroom communication, mass media basics, verbal and non-verbal signals.
Mathematical reasoning and aptitude. Series, ratio, percentage, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, and simple probability. Class 10 arithmetic is enough.
Logical reasoning. Syllogism, analogies, Venn diagrams, coding, statement and conclusion, and simple deductive arguments.
Data interpretation. Tables, bar graphs, pie charts and line graphs. Practise calculating percentages and changes quickly.
Information and Communication Technology. Basic terminology, internet and e-mail, networks, software, cyber safety, digital tools for teaching, e-governance and initiatives such as SWAYAM. Know the meaning of common abbreviations.
People, development and environment. Sustainable development, climate change, pollution, natural hazards and disasters, environmental policies and programmes. This topic is directly relevant for Sikkim, given landslides, glacial lake hazards and earthquakes in the region. Sikkim lies in a high seismic zone, and the earthquake of 18 September 2011 is remembered in the state.
Higher education system. Growth of higher education in India, the role of the UGC, AICTE, NAAC, NIRF and other bodies, the National Education Policy 2020, professional and technical education, open and distance learning and value education. The UGC was set up by an Act of Parliament in 1956, and NAAC is based in Bengaluru.
Subject Paper
The subject paper is based on your Master's syllabus. The advice here is general because subjects differ.
- Download the UGC NET syllabus of your subject, since it is the best checklist available for what an examiner may ask at the Master's level.
- Divide the syllabus into units and mark each as strong, medium or weak. Spend the first period on weak units.
- Read from standard textbooks and a few recent review articles.
- Prepare short notes for key theories, thinkers, dates and terms.
- Solve previous NET or SET papers in your subject. They are the closest public source of question style.
For language subjects such as Nepali, Hindi, English or Bhutia and Lepcha, add literary history, criticism and grammar. For science subjects, practise numericals. For social science, focus on theories and empirical studies, and add Sikkim-related examples in economics, political science, history and sociology.
Sikkim Awareness
Even where the notice does not list it, the interview often includes a question on the state. Prepare these topics in a factual way:
- Sikkim became the 22nd state of India on 16 May 1975, following the Thirty-sixth Amendment. Article 371F contains special provisions for the state.
- The capital is Gangtok. Kangchenjunga, the highest peak in India and the third highest in the world, lies on the Sikkim-Nepal border. Kangchenjunga National Park was inscribed as a mixed World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2016.
- Major rivers are the Teesta and the Rangit. Nathu La is an important border pass to Tibet.
- Sikkim has been recognised for its shift to organic farming.
- Communities include Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali groups, and several languages are recognised for official and educational purposes.
- The state's education system, schools and colleges: know the name of the department and the college where you may work, and the goals of NEP 2020 as they apply to the state.
Salary and Career Growth
Assistant Professors in India are paid on academic pay levels, which under the Seventh Pay Commission for central institutions starts at Level 10, and states adopt these scales in their own way, sometimes with different allowances. Do not rely on a number from a coaching site. The Sikkim advertisement or the department will state the pay and allowances. Career growth follows the UGC's Career Advancement Scheme: after a period of service and meeting requirements such as a PhD, publications and orientation or refresher courses, an Assistant Professor moves to the Associate Professor grade and later to Professor, and the principal's post is filled through rules of the state. A PhD, papers in good journals and involvement in academic work speed this up.
Previous Year Trend
The number of Assistant Professor advertisements in Sikkim in any year is small, and there is not enough public material to draw a reliable trend line from Sikkim's own papers. What can be said is drawn from UGC-style tests in general: the general paper questions are repeated in types, especially Bloom's taxonomy, research methods, higher education institutions and data interpretation, and the subject paper stays close to the Master's syllabus. Interview panels tend to ask about the candidate's dissertation, the syllabus of the subject at the degree level, teaching methods for first-generation learners, and the state. Watch the new education policy, which is a recurring source of questions.
Worked Practice Questions
Q1. In the revised Bloom's taxonomy of the cognitive domain, the highest level is: (a) evaluate (b) analyse (c) create (d) apply Answer: (c). In the revised version (2001) the order from lowest to highest is remember, understand, apply, analyse, evaluate, create. In the original version, evaluation was the highest.
Q2. A researcher studies the effect of study hours on marks. Study hours is the: (a) dependent variable (b) independent variable (c) extraneous variable (d) moderating variable Answer: (b). The independent variable is the cause that is varied. Marks are the dependent variable.
Q3. Rejecting a null hypothesis that is actually true is called: (a) type I error (b) type II error (c) sampling error (d) standard error Answer: (a). Type II error is failing to reject a null hypothesis that is false.
Q4. The University Grants Commission was established as a statutory body by an Act of Parliament in: (a) 1948 (b) 1953 (c) 1956 (d) 1964 Answer: (c). It was set up in 1953 as a body and given statutory status through the UGC Act of 1956.
Q5. NAAC, which assesses and accredits higher education institutions, has its headquarters at: (a) New Delhi (b) Bengaluru (c) Hyderabad (d) Pune Answer: (b).
Q6. The average of five numbers is 24. When one number is removed, the average of the rest becomes 22. The removed number is: (a) 30 (b) 32 (c) 28 (d) 34 Answer: (b). Total of five numbers is 120. Total of four numbers is 88. The removed number is 120 minus 88, which is 32.
Q7. The next term in the series 3, 8, 15, 24, 35, ? is: (a) 46 (b) 48 (c) 50 (d) 52 Answer: (b). The terms are n squared minus 1 for n = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, so the next is 7 squared minus 1, which is 48.
Q8. Kangchenjunga National Park in Sikkim was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016 as: (a) a cultural site (b) a natural site (c) a mixed site (d) a cultural landscape Answer: (c). It was India's first mixed World Heritage site, recognised for both natural and cultural values.
Q9. Under the National Education Policy 2020, the new structure of school education is: (a) 10+2 (b) 5+3+3+4 (c) 6+3+3 (d) 8+4 Answer: (b). The stages are foundational (five years), preparatory (three), middle (three) and secondary (four).
Q10. A class has 60 students. If 35 percent are absent on a day, how many are present? (a) 36 (b) 39 (c) 42 (d) 21 Answer: (b). Absent students are 35 percent of 60, which is 21, so present students are 39.
Month-by-Month Preparation Plan
Since NET or an equivalent is the base eligibility, the first step is to have your qualification ready. If it is done, the plan below takes about six months.
Month 1. Collect the latest UGC guidelines and the subject syllabus. Make a table of units with the status of each. Begin the ten-unit general paper, starting with teaching and research aptitude.
Month 2. Study higher education, ICT and environment. Read about NEP 2020 from the official document summary. Start reading Sikkim facts from a reliable source and build a one-page fact sheet.
Month 3. Focus on the subject paper: two units a week, notes as you go. Practise mathematics and reasoning for thirty minutes daily.
Month 4. Continue the subject paper, attempt a previous NET paper of your subject once every week and analyse the mistakes.
Month 5. Take full-length tests in a timed setting. Revise notes. Write a one-page summary of your dissertation or main academic work and practise explaining it in five minutes.
Month 6. Prepare for the interview: prepare a short teaching demonstration for a topic of your choice, a two-minute introduction, answers on why teaching, why Sikkim and your teaching method for students with different language backgrounds. Revise Sikkim facts and current affairs in education.
Books and Resources
Use the official sources first: the UGC website for regulations and syllabus, the NEP 2020 document and the government portal of Sikkim. For the general paper, use any standard UGC NET Paper 1 guide and solve past NET papers. For your subject, use Master's-level textbooks and NET previous papers. For Sikkim, use official publications, a standard reference for the state's history and geography, and news from reliable sources. Keep a single notebook for the general paper and one for the subject.
Common Mistakes
- Waiting for the advertisement to start. Building a subject base takes months.
- Studying only the general paper and neglecting the subject, or the other way round.
- Not verifying that your Master's marks meet the percentage condition and that your NET subject matches the post.
- Writing a weak application because of small errors in documents.
- Ignoring the interview. In small departments, the interview may decide the outcome.
- Treating Sikkim awareness as optional when the interview panel is from the state.
Comparison with Other Sikkim Exams
| Exam | Body | Level | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPSC Assistant Professor | SPSC or as notified | Postgraduate with NET/PhD | Subject-specific, irregular |
| Sikkim Graduate Teacher / PGT | Education department route | Graduate/postgraduate with B.Ed | School teaching |
| Sikkim TET | State | Eligibility test for school teachers | Qualifying |
| SPSC Sikkim CCE | SPSC | Graduate | Administrative services |
If you hold a Master's degree with NET, school teaching posts and the combined competitive exam are natural alternatives, and the aptitude portion overlaps with the general paper of many state tests.

Final Word
For a state as small as Sikkim, an Assistant Professor advertisement is a rare opportunity, and it favours the candidate who was already prepared. Keep your NET and academic records in order, study the general paper and your subject in a steady way, and learn the state well enough to speak about it in an interview. The practice sets on pareeksha.in can help with objective questions and timing, but the notice from the recruiting body is the final word on eligibility, selection and dates.
