RRB JE practice question
A tower stands on one bank of a river. From a point P on the other bank, exactly opposite the tower, the angle of elevation of the top of the tower is 45°. On moving 50 m away from the bank (directly back from P, away from the river), the angle of elevation of the top of the tower becomes 30°. Find the width of the river.

Correct answer: (C) 68.3 m
Let the width of the river be w and the height of the tower be h. From P: tan(45°) = h/w. From the point 50 m further back: tan(30°) = h/(w+50). Equating h from both: w·tan(45°) = (w+50)·tan(30°). Solving, w = 50×tan(30°) / [tan(45°) − tan(30°)] = 50 × 0.6 / (1 − 0.6) = 68.3 m. (Height of tower works out to h = w·tan(45°) = 68.3 m.)

P से: tan(45°) = h/w।
