SBI Clerk Prelims practice question
A train, 240 m long, crosses a man walking at 6 km/h coming from the opposite direction in a certain time. Had the man instead been running at 12 km/h in the same direction as the train, the train would have taken 8 seconds more to cross him. Find the speed of the train.

Correct answer: (A) 48 km/h
Let train's speed be v km/h. Time (opposite, 6 km/h) = 240 × 18/(5(v+6)) and time (same direction, 12 km/h) = 240 × 18/(5(v−12)). Their difference is 8: 864[1/(v−12) − 1/(v+6)] = 8, so (v−12)(v+6) = 864×18/8 = 1944. Expanding: v² − 6v − 72 = 1944, i.e. v² − 6v − 2016 = 0. Solving this quadratic: v = [6 ± √(36+8064)]/2 = [6 ± 90]/2, taking the positive root, v = 48 km/h.
