RBI Assistant Prelims practice question
From the top of a building of height 80 m, the angle of depression of a scooter approaching the base along a straight level road is first observed to be 30°. After 12 seconds of moving at uniform speed, the angle of depression becomes 45°. Find the total time the scooter takes to reach the base of the building, measured from the first observation, assuming it continues at the same uniform speed.

Correct answer: (A) 28.39 s
Let x1, x2 be the horizontal distances from the base at angles 30° and 45° respectively: x1 = 80·cot30°, x2 = 80·cot45°. Distance between observations, d = x1 − x2 = 80×(√3+1)/2 = 58.56 m, covered in 12 s, so speed = 58.56/12 = 4.88 m/s. Total distance from the first observation point to the base = x1 = 80·cot30° = 138.56 m. Total time required = 138.56/4.88 = 28.39 s.
