IB ACIO Grade II previous year question
Runner A can run 100 metres in 10 seconds, while Runner B runs the same distance in 12 seconds. In a 300-metre race, A gives B a head start of 20 metres and delays his own start by 3 seconds. If both runners maintain constant speeds, how much time will B take to cover the total distances covered by A and B from the moment B starts running until the moment A finishes the race?

Correct answer: (D) 1 minute 9 seconds
Speed A = 10 m/s, Speed B = 100/12 = 25/3 m/s. B starts running immediately, needs to cover (300 − 20) = 280 m; A starts 3s later and runs 300 m, taking 30s, so A finishes at t=33s (from B's start). B's distance in 33s = (25/3)×33 = 275 m. A's distance = 300 m (having started at t=3, running for 30s). Total distance covered by A and B (from B's start to A's finish) = 275 + 300 = 575 m. Time for B (alone, at its own speed) to cover 575 m = 575/(25/3) = 575×3/25 = 69 seconds = 1 minute 9 seconds.
