The price of an article is first increased by 30% and then decreased by 20%. Due to these successive changes, the final price becomes ₹40 more than the original price. What is the original price of the article?

If the original price is p, then p*1.3*0.8 = p+40, i.e. 1.04p = p+40, giving 0.04p=40, so p = 1,000.
